Spacious Georgian Villa And Grounds

Overview

Property

Updated: 24-Nov-2016
Villa in Torquay, South Devon, England - Just A Short Walk To The Harbour, Shopping Area, Beaches, Restaurants, Theatre & Tourist Attractions

Mount Braddon was built in 1827 for a Mrs Sarah Brydges Willyams as part of an exclusive group of Villas on the slopes of Warberry Hill.

Originally Sarah Mendez da Costa, Mrs Brydges Willyams was an adoring fan and friend of the Victorian Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli and on her death in 1863 bequeathed to him the house and £30,000 on the condition that she should be buried alongside him and his wife Anne in the Parish churchyard and Great Hughenden, Buckinghamshire.

Now largely restored to it's former grandeur Mount Braddon and it's garden offers all the elegance and style of late Georgian architecture combined with the comfort of 21st century living.

Spacious, light and well proportioned rooms provide ideal accommodation for groups of friends or families seeking something just a little bit special for their holiday or re-union.

In addition to WiFi availability throughout the house and Free View television in the main sitting room and all but one of the bedrooms, there are a wide range of board and party games suitable for all ages available for evening or daytime entertainment.

Situated in approximately one acre of heavily wooded, private and secluded grounds, giving the feeling of being deep in the countryside, Mount Braddon is just a few minutes walk from Torquay harbour and the main shopping area with a Tesco Central supermarket within easy walking distance for all your self catering needs. The property is excellently sited for those wishing to take advantage of the town’s bars, restaurants and beaches with the opportunity to explore Dartmoor and many of South Devon’s prettiest and most attractive villages and seaside towns within a short driving distance.

About the Owner

We have owned and lived at Mount Braddon in Torquay for over 30 years and raised our family here.

In 2001 part of the land was sold and the main building converted from a restaurant and holiday flats complex back into a single residence. Many of the original period features have been re-instated or restored to provide a period feel with all the comforts of modern living.

Wow-factor!

  • 5 of 5

We have just returned from a great family week away over the half term. The house and grounds are very impressive and had more than enough room for us 12 adults and 6 children. The kids loved playing outside and exploring, or playing a game of pool downstairs.

The hallway and staircase have the wow-factor as soon as you walk in! The fact most bedrooms have an en suite bathroom (rather than just a toilet) was a bonus with so many of us staying there. The master bedroom has a great walk-in wardrobe/dressing room with plenty of hanging space and (just as importantly) plenty of hangers!

That theme runs throughout, the fact that everything is 'well-stocked' really means it's a home from home, but with lots of added extras.

We had to contact the owners a couple of times and they couldn't have been more helpful and reasonable. They were also easily contactable and throughout the week.

We took the kids crabbing, which was popular at the harbour. There were a few places at the harbour to buy a cheap crabbing net and bucket, money well spent in our case!

Also recommend taking the ferry from the harbour to Brixham, another lovely harbour and tourist spot. Very pretty and another popular place to go crabbing!

The house is very well located with a short walk into town. Just be mindful of the steep hills back up to the house, although we did discover a lift in one of the department stores, which was handy!

A great time had by all! Thank you to Garry and Angie for making it as comfortable and enjoyable as possible.

Owner's Response: Angie and I are so pleased that you all enjoyed your stay in our home and that you found Torquay and the surrounding areas interesting and entertaining. It has been a joy and a pleasure communicating with you from day one and an even greater pleasure to return home to find it so clean and tidy. Sadly, not always the case. Many thanks for choosing to book with us, you and the rest of your party will always be welcome back.

Location and Communication - perfect

  • 5 of 5

The question is, "is a 7 night stay in Mount Braddon sufficient time for a group very good friends”? Definitely not. They say a property requires three things location, location, location. Add to that communication, communication, communication, and you have a great house and a great owner.

The house is spacious, comfortable and with reminders of its Disraeli past, what is not to like? The property was very clean and just a ten minute walk into town. We had an excellent roast lunch in the Hole in the Wall pub. Visited Agatha Christie’s house Greenway, Coleton Fishacre, owned by one of the D’Oyly Carte family and HM Prison Dartmoor! If ever a reason was required to stay on the straight and narrow, this is it! All in all, a great week.

Owner's Response: We are so pleased that you all enjoyed the house, Torquay and the surrounding areas. Communication is a two way thing and it was a pleasure corresponding with you. It was also great that you left the place in such good condition. It is a pleasure to have people like yourselves in our home who appreciate and respect it and us. Hopefully you will decide that there is much more of South Devon to see and maybe return at some future date.

Beautiful house in a stunning location!

  • 5 of 5

It was a very spacious and well looked after house which was absolutely perfect for a family gathering. Everyone enjoyed their stay and the location to town was ideal. The garden was very well looked after and the interior decorations of the house was very tradition yet modern at the same time. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would love to stay again.

Our over impression of the house was superlative!

  • 5 of 5

For 4 nights Mount Braddon was the home of a reunion of 8 long time friends. The spacious & comfort of the home, it's historical significance, the beautiful gardens was perfect, providing ample private space and common areas. The property was very clean & well maintained and the owner personally insured we had a most pleasant stay. We all highly recommend anyone visiting Torquay to stay here. It is a pleasant walk into town which has several fine restaurants and pubs to visit along with a harbor featuring daily cruises to other fine points of interest.

Our stay in gorgeous Georgian Villa in Torquay

  • 4 of 5

The villa was set in well maintained, flower-laden grounds close to the harbour with all its attractions and yet secluded enough to feel 'away from it all'. The property was very clean with an absent, but very attentive, owner. We had a lot of friends and relatives visit us whilest there who enjoyed the ambience of the house very much. This did, however, present a few problems as there is only enough parking spaces on site for approximately 4 or 5 cars. There were a wide range of activities in and around the area, from playing pool in the games room and table football in the conservatory to 10 pin bowling by the harbour and adventure playgrounds further afield.

The crab sandwiches at the Dartington Arms in Totnes and cream teas at Cockington also went down a treat. In all we had a fantastic time.

Owner's Response: We are both very pleased that you and the rest of your party enjoyed your stay in our home and that you were able to meet up with and entertain all your friends and relatives who lived in the area. We were though a little disappointed to lose our 100 % record especially as this appeared to be on the grounds of the amount of parking spaces available on site. We make every effort to be accurate in our description of the house and the facilities available and try to make it clear on the Owner's Direct site that parking is only available for a maximum of five cars. We also always follow this up at the time of the booking with more precise details of the accommodation including the parking spaces that are available both on site and in the adjoining roads. However we always welcome constructive criticism and comments and will try to make this even more clear for our future guests.
