Remote and Peaceful Stone Cottages On Farm Near Hadrian's Wall With Indoor Pool - Hope Sike

Updated: 05-Oct-2016
Cottages in Northumberland National Park, Haltwhistle, Northumberland, England: 1, 2 and 3 bed-roomed. Games room and pool. Dogs very welcome.

Scotchcoulthard is situated on the edge of Kielder Forest north of Hadrian's wall at its most spectacular part. The farm is situated in 180 acres of farmland with two streams running across and a few woods, not another inhabited dwelling can be seen from the farm. One of the woods is used by the Marine Reserves on occasion and there are bashers and wigwams that they have built with plenty of wood lying about to have a go at making more.

Dogs are welcome here with no extra charge and no restriction on number. Our dogs love to welcome new dogs and if you haven't any dogs of your own ours are happy to step into the breach! There are 4 labradors, a Jack Russell and five cats.

We also have Rare Breed pigs, sheep, Belted Galloways, Turner the horse and usually some produce to purchase.

Scotchcoulthard is halfway between Hexham and Carlisle and it is possible to be at Newcastle or The Lake District within the hour. There is walking right outside the door on the farm land and surrounding forest/common land. Scotchcoulthard is just off The Pennine Cycle Route 68 going through the forest.

Scotchcoulthard has a games room with a 3/4 size snooker table, table tennis, a selection of games, jigsaws, books, Dvd's and a seating/playing area. There is also a dining area with access to a fully equipped kitchen if all cottages are booked together and more space is needed.

There is an indoor heated pool (12mx5mx1m). It is on from Easter until the end of August and again for the October half term. It is shared between the other cottages and owners. However private use can be arranged if desired.

The Byre is a two bed-roomed cottage sleeping 4 (plus room for 2 children) on one floor with a shower room and en-suite bath room.

Hawthorn is a three bed-roomed cottage sleeping up to 7. All rooms have en-suite bathrooms.

Hope Sike is a one bedroom cottage all on one floor.

There is access to a twin en-suite room in another building which can be booked to be used as an overspill bedroom. It has a small fridge, kettle, toaster, microwave and tv. The en-suite has a shower.

Guestbook comments from the owner

This is indeed a hidden Gem. A beautiful cottage set in beautiful surroundings with great hosts and briliant facilities. We stayed in Hope Syke which was a cosy and comfortable small cottage with a wood burning fire (which was useful given the poor weather we had in July!). We made use of the swimming pool which was an added bonus.

The cottage is down a small track which we managed in our 2 wheel drive hatchback. Although, the only way to tackle this road (track) is at low speed, it allows time to enjoy the scenery which doesn't disappoint.

Perfectly placed for walks on Hadrians Wall and it is possible to drive to Carlisle, Newcastle in around an hour. We made a trip over the boarder into Scotland to Jedburgh (worth a visit for the abbey and it is a pleasent drive from the cottage). We also visited Kielder Water which offers some fabulous scenery.

Whilst we used the cottage as a base for exploring the area it is equally well suited for a quiet retreat.

We thouroughly enjoyed our week and will be looking to book again.
