Stunning views from reconstructed farmhouse near 10 th century village Vergemoli

Updated: 22-Nov-2016
House in Vergemoli, Nr. Barga, Lucca Province, Tuscany and Florence, Italy - The Location Is Peaceful And Quiet With Nothing To Disturb You Except The Birds

Casa Debbio is a newly built stone house on the site of an old farm house set among chestnut forests in the Garfagnana, a mountain region in northern Tuscany. The house has been rebuilt in the same dimensions as the original house. Stone was gathered from the property to build the house and the ancient volcanic stone doorway was saved and replaced in the new house. The ground floor has hand made Terra-cotta tile floors with underfloor heating. The wooden staircase leads up to a small study and a toilet and on to the very large main bedroom and bathroom. The top floor has 2 double bedrooms. One is smaller with a single bed which expands to become a double. Both bedrooms have their own spacious bathroom. The ceilings on the top floor feature huge chestnut beams and Terra-cotta tiles. Water for the property comes from our own mountain spring. All the rooms have wonderful views over the village below and across to the mountains in the distance. The house faces south and basks in sunshine all day. There is a small grassed garden beside the house with a small vegetable garden. Guests are invited to enjoy what ever is growing, tomatoes, herbs, raspberries etc. There is also a barbecue for outdoor meals. There are several other terraces surrounding the house. The garden is a work in progress with new apple, pear, cherry, fig, peach, plum, pomegranate and persimmon trees. There are also a couple of very old fig and cherry trees on the property. In summer the garden is filled with fireflies and you can hear the sounds of owls calling to each other. The village is a 10 minute walk away, or a 2 minute drive. A 4 wheel drive car is provided for trips to and from the village. There is a bar open in the mornings and evenings, a well stocked shop open 6 days a week for 4 hours and a pharmacy operating similar hours. The people in Vergemoli are very friendly and visitors to Casa Debbio are quite likely to be invited to join in local events. There are hundreds of small villages dotted in the mountains around Vergemoli, each with its own history and fascinating things to see. There are many very good and inexpensive restaurants in the area.

About the Owner

We are Australians who spend half our lives in Italy. We bought our first apartment in Bagni di Lucca in 2003.

We love the area and in 2007 bought 10,000 square metres of land in a national park in the Garfagnana area of northern Tuscany with a ruin on it. The old house was too far gone to fix, so we built a brand new house on the site. The house has been finished for 2 years and we are now enjoying building the garden. We love to travel, particularly in Italy. One lifetime is not enough to see all that our beautiful area has to offer.

From the Owner

We knew the area well because we bought our first house in 2003. Nearby Lucca drew us to the area. It is one of the loveliest towns in Italy. The Garfagnana is a beautiful mountain zone in northern Tuscany. There are hundreds of villages scattered through the mountains, each with its own character and charm. There are wonderful local restaurants offering delicious, inexpensive meals from fresh ingredients. The people of Vergemoli have been wonderfully welcoming. We are regularly included in village feasts and events. They have been involved in the building process and are delighted that one of their old properties has been brought back to life. It is great to spend time in this sleepy village where time seems to have stood still.

From the Owner

We think Casa Debbio is a perfect retreat for those wanting to escape their busy lives. The house stands alone in chestnut forest where you hear nothing except birds singing. The views from the house are spectacular and change constantly with the weather, seasons and time of day. The house is new and provides everything you will need for a restful holiday. Casa Debbio faces South and basks in the sun all day. There is ample space with complete privacy to take advantage of the sun to lie and read a book or do nothing. If you wish you can walk or drive to the village where there is a bar and shop and chat to the locals and be part of village life. A 4 wheel drive car is included with the house to allow easy access to and from the village.
