About the property

Villa in Kalyves, Tsivaras, Chania, Crete, Greek Islands, Greece - Secluded, 5 Minutes Drive to Beach

Sleeps 4/6, 2 bedroom villa. New build with private solar heated swimming pool. Amazing views to sea and mountains.

Built within its own secluded olive grove of just over an acre in size, ensuring absolute privacy yet Hestia Villa is just over a Km from the tourist town of Kalyves and one of the best beaches in Western Crete at Almyrida is but a few minutes away. Hestia Villa stands alone with its own 11m x 4m heated pool, no other property shares the site or looks onto it in any way.

Impressive glass doors open onto extensive balconies overlooking the magnificent infinity pool, olive groves and sea. At the side of the villa there is a shaded seating area, perfect for reading a book and relaxation.

Hestia Villa is well placed for exploring the old Venetian ports of Chania and Rethymnon, the Minion Palace at Knossos, the Limnoupolis waterpark, the unique beach at Elafonisi or walking the Samaria Gorge.

Registered with the Greek National Tourist Board.

20Mb satellite Internet with Wi-Fi, air-conditioning, washing machine, dishwasher, BBQ, 2x LED TVs, Blu-Ray, DVD, CD player and iron. In addition to Greek terrestrial TV, the Satellite TV receives about 800 channels from Astra 1 and Hotbird in many languages. Also included are a laser printer to print out those boarding passes and a phone with a UK landline number (available for guest use) so you can avoid expensive mobile fees yet stay in touch with family and friends.

The swimming pool is usable throughout the rented season, though the actual temperature will depend on how much sun is available to heat the water. You can expect the heating to provide a pool perhaps 5c-6c hotter than others in the area and up to about 30c, certainly it will be one of the warmest on Crete. In May 2015 pool temps reached around 27c-28c, which is comfortable for swimming and other local pools were reported to be 22c and quite cold.

Hestia Villa is a new build, the gardens were planted in February 2015 and are maturing nicely, the recently pruned olive trees are starting to return. The pictures shown were taken in February 2015 and will be updated periodically.

Why Phil Gillam chose Chania area

Designed and built on a green field site to be a getaway place that we want to return to as well as a property that others will enjoy. We chose Crete due to the wealth of scenery, life and good weather over a long summer. Being British and hopeless at languages it helps that most Cretans speak some English! Hestia Villa is the result of nearly 10 years of visiting Crete, learning about the country and experiencing both the good and the bad of other places to stay.

What makes this villa unique

Hestia Villa is all about doing things properly. It is not built with the cheapest of anything, though neither is it overly plush for the sake of it. Every fitting and fixture is of a high quality, is correctly installed with a high level of workmanship, attention to detail is evident throughout. We wanted to enjoy staying at our villa and hope you will too!

Delightful little villa for couple

  • 5 of 5

New, smart and well-equipped, Hestia Villa is ideal for a couple or a couple with one or two small children. Furnishings and equipment are modern and of very good quality - flat-screen TV with satellite, DVD player with some DVDs, CD player with some CDs, a small library, really excellent kitchen, comfortable beds. The villa is open plan, with the kitchen, dining and sitting areas all connected, which makes it seem that there is more space than there actually is. Two bedrooms, one with a double bed, one with two singles, and one small toilet / shower room. For visitors from continental Europe or the US, do be aware that the terminology used to describe the beds is specific to the UK - the king-sized bed is only 150cm wide, the two singles 75cm each. But the real joy of this property is outside the villa, with a lovely 12 metre heated infinity pool, an extensive paved sitting area round the pool, a balcony with chairs on the main bedroom, a generous dining area, and another attractive covered sitting area with armchairs and sofas above the villa. The barbecue is a modern Weber 'Kettle'. And the whole is set in a large olive grove, far away from the neighbouring properties, with a view across Kalyves to Souda Bay and the Akrotiri Peninsula beyond. For light sleepers, there is a rather noisy main road to Kalyves below the villa. But for us, the only real downside of this fine property was the wifi, which is very slow and doesn't allow the downloading of even quite small email attachments; and for older kids, the absence of streaming may be an issue. Nick of Right Hand Man and his crew kept the house and grounds clean and tidy, and Nick was very helpful. A special thank you to owner Phil who called to advise us when the Greek air traffic controllers threatened a strike which would have prevented us flying home on time.

Well equipped, high spec villa with great view

  • 5 of 5

The villa is as impressive as it appears in the website photographs. It is located on a hillside surrounded by olive trees and has spectacular views across Souda Bay and of the mountain on top of which the Aptera ancient remains are to be found. Despite being peaceful and secluded, it is only a couple of miles from the small coastal town of Kalyves which has a long sandy beach and a good choice of tavernas. A car is essential to access the property and to explore. Western Crete is not overly developed and, away from the coast, it is still a traditional farming community living in villages and small towns.

There is good walking for those fit enough to cope with the hills. The villa's guest book indicated that young families had found plenty to do. We are of mature years and were impressed by the evidence of the island's long history. Some of the early settlements go back 4000 years. Over the millennia, Crete has been invaded many times and each invader has left evidence of its presence. The cities of Chania and Rethymnon both have the remains of fortifications and a Venetian harbour and they are good for shopping and buying souvenirs. The cathedral in Chania was an interesting and welcome escape from the heat. We would have liked time to explore further south and west and to visit some of the monasteries; also the botanical gardens at Fournes which, according to comments in the villa's guest book, has an excellent restaurant. Indeed, food was a great pleasure. Whilst international dishes, especially Italian, were readily available in all the tourist restaurants, we usually opted for traditional Greek dishes in the tavernas. Had we been less lazy, we could have patronised John the English butcher in nearby Vamos and had a barbecue beside the pool.

The temperatures were in the mid 30s when we arrived, reducing to the upper 20s by the end of the week. Inevitably we had thunder storms but they were at night so barely affected our activities. In these conditions the infinity pool at the villa was bliss. It would have been very easy to spend all our time there. It was better equipped than indicated on the website (eg binoculars) and it was spotlessly clean on our arrival. The management company visited on our second day and it was good to have this support.

Thank you. We very much hope to return.

Greta and Derek

Villa Hesta August 2016

  • 5 of 5

The villa was beautifully equipped, clean, and everything was as billed.

It is secluded, and has a lovely pool, and we have no qualms about recommending the villa for a holiday in Crete.

The only very minor drawback is that the WiFi is not as good a some children will want, but that gave us the perfect excuse to go the local beach bar so that the children could catch up with their streaks on Snapchat!!

You will not be disappointed with the quality & standard of Villa Hesta!

Absolutely gorgeous villa

  • 5 of 5

Hestia Villa is really lovely. Out on it's own, you have virtually no neighbours so really private. The pool is big, slightly cooler than I thought it would be for a heated pool! The Villa itself if quite new and really well equipped. The only thing I would add if I owned it would be a pool table or table tennis for older children outside as teenagers do get a bit bored, especially as the WiFi doesn't allow streaming. The property is well maintained and really clean. The beds are comfortable. The management company were on hand to help if necessary.

We mixed eating out with cooking on the BBQ. We hired a car to get around as there's not really much within walking distance. There is a Supermarket in Kalyves which is adequate for all you need.

The water park in Chania was good for teens, as was the Go Karting at Pista Park. Elefonissi beach was a really lovely day out and not too far really. I would recommend this property, perhaps not for older teens but definitely for couples or families with younger children. We will return one day when the kids have left home!!

Privacy and perfection

  • 5 of 5

A truly wonderful holiday experience from beginning to end. If you are reading this you are obviously considering staying in Crete/this villa - stop considering and book! Villa Hestia is peaceful and private due to a complete lack of neighbours, which we loved. We are normally a very active family and we generally fill holidays with lots of days out, but most days we couldn't drag ourselves away from the villa. With plentiful outdoor space, glorious views, a heated pool and sunshine on the garden all day, what more could we need?

Our children (aged 6 and 3) loved the pool (although I recommend tummy bands for non-swimmers as the shallow end was not shallow enough for either of our children, but that was not an issue as we took tummy bands and supervised them in the pool at all times).

Although not large inside, Hestia is the perfect size for a family of four and it had absolutely everything we needed. Normally when I stay in holiday vlllas or cottages I spot something that could be improved or provided, but with Hestia I could not think of a thing - it has been so well thought out and fitted out. The property was spotlessly clean and finished to a very high standard. A welcome pack was provided on arrival, which was really appreciated as we arrived on a late flight after the shops had shut. The management company are really friendly and nothing at all went wrong with the villa.

We went to Limnoupolis water park (approx. 30 mins away) - which is not for the adrenaline junky as it is fairly tame, but ideal for a family with young children (and a 35 year old who has never been to a water park before!) as a gentle introduction to the thrill of a water park. Falasarna Beach is worth the trip of approx. 1hr10mins - although the beaches local to the villa are nice, Falasarna is stunning! Beautiful soft sand and not a resort or hotel in sight, which means it is quiet.

We ate out every evening thanks to the large variety of cheap, but excellent, tavernas in the area. Most were right on the beach so the kids could paddle and play whilst meals were prepared. We used the BBQ in the villa a couple of times - the villa had everything we needed for a BBQ - we only had to buy the meat (which we got from a butcher in Chania indoor market - highly recommended).

We have never returned to a holiday destination as we like to move on and try new things, but Hestia might make a unique list. I have already recommended Hestia to numerous friends.
