About Susan Lowe

When I was at secondary school I took part in the Birmingham Poitiers exchange, for 6 weeks over the summer, and this gave me my first taste of France, at the age of 13. I stayed with Annie in Angoulême, and got to know her family. Since then we have had many great holidays here, and when we retired we decided to buy a French property to renovate, as you do, so here we are. We like gardening, recycling, cinema, food, building renovation(just as well, really) having the right tool for the job, reading, family gatherings. And since you may be wondering, I'm still in regular contact with Annie, we became grandmothers in the same fortnight, and she lives about an hour away.

Susan Lowe purchased this barn in 2007

Why Susan Lowe chose Pleuville

We enjoyed holidays in SW France with the family over many years, usually staying in a VFB gite. We explored parts of the Pyrenees, and the Bordeaux region, as well as the Charente. So when we retired, and decided to move, it seemed logical to look for a project in the Charente, since we both like renovating old buildings. We didn't have a precise location in mind, but we have grown to love the rolling countryside, and the peace, and discovering new places to visit, this year it was the Jardin Ephemère at St Fraigne, and the chateau de Galmoisin. But each of our guest families has found new and different things to like.

What makes this barn unique

A peaceful rural environment, a sense of space, birds and wild life, many interesting places to visit- chateaux, gardens, Roman ruins, beautiful small villages; Angouleme, Poitiers and Limoges within easy reach, a feeling of history all around us, friendly and responsive hosts.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Quiet Gite In Château Grounds in Rural Charente, With Pool And Access To Park
average rating of 4.8 based on 6 reviews

Peaceful & quiet location

  • 4 of 5

We all enjoyed the pool - really good idea having the pool wet room. Loads of crockery & cooking utensils. Very quiet rural location but great to be able to walk to Brigitte for bread & croissants (& anything else you might have forgotten).

Owner's Response: Hi, so glad you enjoyed your stay here in the North Charente. The countryside is particularly beautiful, and we are always delighted when families find lots to do very locally. With our interest in old buildings, we have been excited to see unexpected and "hidden " places opening their doors, and more outside activities for active families. I will give your regards to Brigitte.

This property met all our needs

  • 5 of 5

We had no complaints apart from the weather (worst thunder storms for 5 years!) The house, pool and grounds were ideal. Susan and Alan were great host and there to help out when needed.

We would highly recommend this property.

Beautiful house in quiet country location with lovely heated swimming pool. Very helpful owner.

  • 5 of 5

Just returned from two week stay, sharing with friends. Beautiful barn conversion with great, heated swimming pool that has a pool room with shower/ toilet attached. Very nice inside with a good kitchen/ living area and the bedrooms were all lovely with comfortable beds. Well equipped with washing machine/ dishwasher and DVD player/ screen on the wall. The owner was helpful and friendly and provided croissants/ bread and jam on arrival which was a very nice touch. Would recommend Adventure Park and Confelons for kayaking and great restaurant in Civray called Hotel Commerce. Would definitely go back.

Owner's Response: So glad you had a good time, The weather in this last fortnight has been hotter than I can remember for some time. I am so glad you have enjoyed the activities available around here, there is lots to do with active children, and the Charente has very attractive countryside, and so many picturesque small villages. Thankyou for looking after our gite and pool while you were here, you are the type of guests that we would be happy to see again! Hope you had a good journey home. Brigitte in the village shop says hello.

Lovely peaceful place

  • 5 of 5

Very spacious gite with good social space indoors and out. Clean and full of character. The pool is a good size, with comfortable furniture and the trampoline was a big hit with a little one. The owners are very knowledgable about the area which has very interesting small towns - highlight for me was a personal and free tour of the ruined Abbaye in Charroux. Definitely recommended for anyone who enjoys peaceful rural France with plenty to see in the area.

Owner's Response: Many thanks, so glad you enjoyed yourselves, despite the rain in June!?! We take great pleasure in talking about all the things there are to do in this region, and then hearing about our guest's experiences. We are still finding new places and restaurants to visit, despite this being somewhat off the beaten track. And the countryside is very beautiful, with small fields and hamlets, lots of cows, and fields of sunflowers in the summer.

Superb property in beautiful setting, recommended!

  • 5 of 5

We spent 2 weeks at this beautiful property and would recommend it wholeheartedly! It was spotless on arrival, very spacious (much more than perhaps the pictures suggest) and was extremely well equipped with everything we could need, down to little touches like moulds to make ice lollies which the children loved! The property was beautifully refurbished with masses of character and charm, with a perfect balance of old and new.

The swimming pool and its surrounds were definitely the best we have been to in our several visits to France. The pool was large with easy steps in, absolutely spotless each day, everything was very new with comfortable loungers and parasols as well as a super shower room and toilet adjoining it. The pool is unheated but when the weather is hot and sunny, it is perfectly refreshing!, and the children were in and out of it constantly, rain or shine!

We loved exploring the grounds of the chateau which were rich with wildlife. We enjoyed each evening sitting out to a clear sky, stargazing, listening to the crickets and the local toad population, watching bats circling around and waiting for the owl to go out on its nightly hunt. Wonderful!

Susan and Alan were fantastic hosts, and Susan was so helpful in offering guidance on the surrounding areas, where to go, what to do and a fountain of knowledge! We were lucky enough to be able to sample her delicious homemade jams and fresh produce from the garden, and fell in love with her pottery!

The area is typical rural France, lots of sunflowers and sweetcorn, quiet villages and hamlets, lovely churches etc but plenty of places to visit of interest. We most enjoyed the wonderful sculpture garden at Bioussac, Nanteuil en Vallee, Verteuil sur Charente and a fantastic arbor adventure at the Haute lakes. Our son also loved cycling up to the nearby football pitch and practising his rainbow flicks! We took our bikes, and the area was great for cycling with plenty of fairly flat, quiet country lanes, perfect for a young family. Pleuville is a very quiet village but at its heart, has a lovely bar and tabac run by Bridget, who was so helpful and ordered us in croissants and baguettes each day as required. We also enjoyed an early evening drink there.

Overall,we could not recommend this property more highly, as long as peace, quiet and tranquility is what you are after! We loved it and hope to return again in the future. Thank you so much for a most enjoyable stay!

Owner's Response: It was a great pleasure to welcome this family to our gîte, and to hear their obvious enjoyment of their activities in the region from day to day. They wanted to visit both places of interest, and places offering activities or new experiences for the children, but also made the gîte their own, using the (fairly basic) barbecue, exploring in the park, and thank you for watering the flowers! They have obvious experience of previous holidays in France, which may help in giving a feel for how things work, it was good to hear their views on things that we like here. Many thanks for leaving the place beautifully clean and tidy, thank you for your feedback on the facilities, and 5 gold stars for being exemplary guests!
