*** VALENTINE COTTAGE : 2 bedrooms & sleeps up 2 to 4 ***

As soon as you walk in through the front door, you will appreciate the attention to detail which has gone into making Valentine Cottage a special holiday base. Valentine Cottage continues to be enjoyed by guests wanting a romantic break, small families wanting to be close to the seaside, and friends wanting to enjoy walking along the amazing coastline and may be holidaying on a budget and don't mind using the bunkbedroom (compensated for by Valentine Cottage's low rental price). Overall, we’ve aimed to ensure that the cottage retains much of its original period charm and it is bursting with character, enhanced by a contemporary artistic coastal interior design theme that runs throughout. Includes a well appointed kitchen, separate sitting room and dining room, private garden, and two bedrooms which sleep 2-4 people. Central heating. An ideal destination all year round. Valentine Cottage is arranged over three floors,

Living Room

Cosy room with TV/DVD, sofa and loom armchairs providing seating for 4 people, soft throws, coffee tables, reading lamp and window seat.

Small but well equipped to meet the needs of our range of guests :- cafetiere, digital radio, plenty of glassware, crockery, cutlery, oven and table-wear, and an array of artistic and vintage touches; gas hob and electric oven with grill, fridge (with small freezer/icebox), microwave oven, and washer/drier.

Separate Dining Room

Both rooms are decorated with the artistic and seaside theme we’ve chosen, and include loom-weave bedside cabinets, bedside lamps, pictures, and mirrors. Plenty of bedding - consisting of pillows and duvets. Hair dryer also included.

First floor bathroom

Bath with shower attachment, wash-basin, WC and shaver point.

Small enclosed private garden which catches the mid-day to mid-afternoon sun. BBQ, Bistro style table and chairs provided all year round. Raised borders and container planting.

TV/DVD player, and digital radios in the kitchen and double bedroom. There is also a range of DVDs and plenty of novels to make guests’ time at Valentine Cottage more relaxing.

Plenty of children’s books and a selection of games. High-chair and stair gate provided at no extra cost. Plus use of a travel cot if guests which fits snuggly in either bedroom, if you don’t mind a squeeze.

Other facilities

Gas central-heating & hot-water at no extra cost. Hair-drier, iron, ironing board, & additional fan-heaters. Free wifi.

Sea views

From the top floor rear window, there are good views over the town, and across the sea and bay where you can see the neighbouring town of Charmouth and its surrounding coastline.

Our lovely cottages are over 300 years old, so like almost all of the other historic centrally located properties in Lyme Regis built when the town relied almost solely on 'Poldark' style transport, there isn’t any dedicated carparking. However, there are short-stay parking bays available about 10metres away at the small library, as well as two large, well-lit public carparks about 3 minutes walk.

Many guests appreciate how well located Lyme Regis is for its coastal walks and leisure amenities and often manage to not return to their parked cars for their entire holiday.

About Jan Miller

I'm a fashion management consultant, keeping busy with London Fashion Week and working with exciting fashion brands. Hopefully you'll see from the cottages' interiors, that I work in a creative environment.

Jan Miller purchased this cottage in 2001

Why Jan Miller chose Lyme Regis

After very enjoyable holidays in Lyme Regis with our children when they were small, we were lucky enough to buy Valentine Cottage, instantly falling in love with its quirky charm. We used it as our main family holiday destination for many years, and it's a real delight to see our children, now young adults, regularly stay in the cottages and enjoy them as much as we have always done.

We still stay whenever we can, to enjoy Lyme Regis and the coastline. But also to check first-hand that the cottages are remaining up to the standards that we ourselves expect.

The story behind the cottages is interesting, and there is an historic Indenture framed and hung in Silver Cottage which describes some of it. Both cottages have a transcription of this document in their Visitors Packs. The transcript was produced by John Fowles during his time as Curator at the Lyme Regis Museum. He was clearly interested in the history of the cottages enough to take the time to work on the document, and we're very grateful to have this historic manuscript.

Valentine Cottage and Silver Cottage were once one much larger property until the 1920s when the owner decided to divide them into two separate properties, with Silver Cottage ending up with 3 bedrooms, and Valentine Cottage having 2. If you stay in Valentine Cottage, you'll see that what it lacks in size (compared with the larger Silver Cottage), it makes up for in charm and inventiveness to utilise all available space, as well as being a very competitive priced holiday rental option.

What makes this cottage unique

We like to think that the cottages are unique because they're next door to each other, which makes them a great option for larger family groups. They're also close to the seafront, but guests can also have access to our beach hut (subject to availability - it needs to be booked separately as its very popular).

Guestbook comments from the owner

“Had a fantastic week, cottage in a great location and beach hut was brilliant fun. Thanks!”

“We really enjoyed our week here, celebrating our Ruby Wedding Anniversary. Lovely, cosy cottage, everything here you need. Hope to come back.”

“It was lovely to spend Christmas here on our fourth visit to Valentine Cottage. Enjoyed the carols down Broad Street near the Christmas tree and dinner at the Harbour Inn and loved playing the games under the bed.”

Everything we could have hoped for! The accommodation was ideal for our family. The kitchen was well equipped with every modern convenience we could possibly need. Loads of books, games and DVD to keep us entertained. The bedrooms were all a decent size. The seating area in the lounge was small but perfectly adequate for my family of 4. The shower on the top floor was the only thing we would have changed, but there's a massive bathroom on the first floor that more than made up for it. We will most definitely book again.

Owner's Response: We're so pleased you rated our cottage as 5 star Gemma. And thank you for your feedback on the layout of the lounge area. The way we have laid out the furniture in the large open plan lounge/diner has been done so that guests can snuggle up closer to the open fire, and to watch the TV. I hope that our photos give a good impression of the layout. Best wishes Jan

Could have been made better

  • 3 of 5

It was a pity that this cottage has not been cared for properly, although it is in an ideal position and plenty of space we felt the lounge area was very cramped the beds were comfy but the first floor front bedroom needs a needs a blind as the curtains do not block the light, bathrooms were good,

A delightful holiday cottage.....

  • 5 of 5

We (me, my wife, and adult daughter) had a 3 night break in Silver Cottage in early September - firstly the location is really convenient for all the local amenities - shops, cafes, restaurants and sea front all within easy walking distance. It was good to be able to come back after a day out and forget about the car; there are plenty of places to eat out just a few minutes walk away, or the kitchen is very well equipped if you want to stay in. The cottage is very nicely furnished and decorated; the beds are comfortable and it is very easy to relax and feel at home here. We have had several holidays in Lyme Regis over the years, self catering and B&B, and this was the nicest accommodation we have found. Highly recommended!

had all we needed for a weeks holiday.

  • 3 of 5

We had a really good time and found the cottage had all we needed. The downside to being so central to everything was the traffic noise but you can't have everything! Also found the garden a bit of a minefield with little ones, very uneven surface so a couple of trips and grazed knees! but again didn't really detract from the holiday

Valentine and Silver Cottages are situated a quick 5 minute walk to the Marine Parade beach, and a 10 minutes walk from the famous Cobb harbour and its sandy beach. The beaches can be accessed through Langmoor Gardens for a gentle walk with views of the Cobb and seascape.

If you intend to be on the beach for extended time, then you might want to consider hiring our Beach Hut for hire which can be a great base on the sea front, fully equipped with deck chairs, table, picnic essentials and beach toys.

About Lyme Regis :

Lyme Regis is a small coastal town and an ideal holiday or short break destination throughout the year and is welcoming to its visitors of all ages and interests. It has a great selection of galleries, museums, restaurants, takeaways, shops, a cinema, and a small theatre.

There are sandy, shingle, beach-combing and famous fossil-hunting beaches, with rock pools, safe swimming and many water sports including sailing, wind-surfing and water skiing.

The famous harbour at the Cobb boasts all kinds of boats and there are fishing trips available. The impressive coastline around Dorset and East Devon has recently been awarded World Heritage site status, offering walkers some breath-taking views and challenging terrain.

You may see Lyme Regis appearing on TV and in film fairly regularly. It's appeared on the BBC Coast series a few times, and Meryl Streep and Jeremy Irons were here for the filming of John Fowles' The French Lieutenant's Woman'.
