Converted Hill Top Barn With Stunning Views Over Irfon Valley

Overview

Property

Updated: 30-Nov-2016
Converted Barn/Cottage in Builth Wells, Powys, Wales - Peaceful Rural Spot With Access To Woodland And Open Hill

Hafod-y-Blodau (Hafod) is a self catering holiday cottage 3 ½ miles from Builth Wells, Powys (home of The Royal Welsh Show) in the heart of mid Wales. This delightful converted barn sleeps four in two bedrooms and is perched at the top of a hill at one end of a small farming estate with breathtaking views over the Irfon valley and 20 miles or more into the Cambrian Mountains. A birdwatchers paradise, the house and garden is on a level with the red kites, ravens and buzzards that circle high above the valley. It is surrounded by pasture land and extensive woodlands criss-crossed with footpaths and tracks leading down into fields alongside the River Irfon and behind, up onto open hill land. It is a perfect base for active holidays or peacefully relaxing away from the stresses and strains of every-day life.

The cottage is in a fantastic location

  • 4 of 5

The cottage was as described and very clean. It had all that was needed for our 2 week stay. The view from the property was to die for and we were especially lucky with the weather. The walking from the cottage gave our dogs more than enough exercise and stimulation.

Unfortunately, 6 days into our holiday the cottage was surrounded by foxhounds and men on quad bikes with guns. The foxhounds were completely out of control and we had great difficulty in keeping them out of the cottage garden. We saw 3 foxes being chased but cannot say if they were caught because they ran out of our sight.

Also the Sennybridge artillery range is within earshot and it was in full use during our stay and we had 2 nights when loud artillery fire went on into the early hours of the morning.

Given these 2 negative points if we had known them before booking we would not have stayed at the cottage. No amount of fantastic views can make up for seeing fox hunting in our back garden. If this isn't a concern then the cottage is a nice place to stay.

Owner's Response: I am so glad you liked our cottage and its wonderful views. It was very unfortunate that the end of your holiday was spoiled by coinciding with an infrequent visit by the local farmers hunt. They do not visit more than three times a year and if you wish to return to Hafod I can ring the hunt and make sure the dates do not clash. The north end of the Sennybridge range is not used for firing during the normal course of events, I am afraid the fates conspired and chose the later part of your holiday. I do hope that you will come back to Hafod again when I can check that the circumstances are more favourable.

Remote, peaceful, comfortable, heaven.

Do not let two and a half miles of single track road put you off. It is more than worth it when you get there. The view speaks for itself, we ventured out twice during our eleven night stray because everything we wanted in our holiday was right there. Comfy beds, nicely furnished, well equiped, plenty of hot water, dishwasher and washing machine and most important plenty of dog walks from the cottage. Our hosts made us welcome and we loved their cottage. Diva the pony who lived next door was a delight. We will be back.

Superb location and views

Fantastic location for getting away from it all. Red kites flew above our heads every day. Good walks from the door. Log burner much appreciated and wood provided (great bonus!). Very accommodating owners who allowed our three well behaved dogs. Highly recommended.
