About the property

House in Autignac, Beziers, Herault, Languedoc-Roussillon, France - Sleeps 6 - 3 Bedrooms; 2 Full Bathrooms, Pool, Garden, All Amenities

Aux Pieds des Vignes is located in a quiet street in the wine village of Autignac, 2 minutes walk from the local café and baker, which is next to the town's historic 17th century church. The house is in the village centre which also has a bakery, bar/café and general store. Everything you need is in the village including post office, pharmacy, doctor, weekly visiting fish/shellfish vans from the coast, cheese and pizza vans, plus a produce market twice a week. A larger supermarket is just 6 minutes by car. Our home is fully equipped with all kitchen and living amenities including stove, oven, refrigerator, microwave, washing machine, a new flat screen TV, DVD player, CD player and radio (iPod ready), barbecue, indoor and outdoor dining areas and pool. In one of the courtyard's is small completely renovated guest house/bedroom with 2 bunk beds and brand new bath facilities including shower, toilet and wash basin. Beds include 1 queen, two twins plus two bunks. Wine and History: Aux Pieds des Vignes sits in the Faugeres wine region, one of the most up and coming Languedoc wine appellations and nearby also are St Chinian and Minervois wine regions. For restaurants there are many including three in nearby Magalas (6 minutes drive) One place close by and worth seeing a panoramic view of the Mediterranean coast from is the Moulins or Windmills in Faugeres and if you go early enough in the day with the sun rising in the east the views of the nearby Pyrenees mountain range are stunning. Also nearby of course are the lakes, rivers, gorges and climbing in the Languedoc National Park, the highest road bridge in the world at Millau and an just over an hour to Carcassone and its walled city or Aigues Mortes where the crusaders left from. The area is ideal for biking, walking, horse riding, fishing, and of course all those year round festivals and fetes that France is famous for are here in abundance. Activities and Adventures: Locally the area has lots of attractions, not least the long sandy Mediterranean beaches just 25 minutes away. You can also swim in the river Orb or canoe and white water raft on it at Reals near Murviels, the international canoe centre, also popular for picnics while others enjoy the river. The village of Roquebrun is worth a visit, beautifully located further up river. There are also lots of festivals not least those in Beziers (Festa D’Oc and Feria in August, a very large 5 day street party based on Spanish culture), Pezenas the town of Moliere and with a great Saturday market, Bedarieux with its Monday market and of course a host of winemakers to visit and sample their wines. Fun for the kids (and parents): Water Park located in Cap d'Agde called Aqualand.

About Maria and John Olhalloran

We live in County Cork in Ireland. Our three children are grown up. Both of us are retired. We love the outdoor life in the garden and further afield.

When we first saw the house, originally a barn and over a hundred years old we had no hesitation in buying it. For us it is the perfect house in the perfect location.

Maria and John Olhalloran purchased this house in 2013

Why Maria and John Olhalloran chose Beziers area

Our love of hill walking, cycling and swimming drew us to to the Languedoc many years ago on holidays with our children.

Autignac is a village 20km North of Beziers, surrounded by vineyards on the border of the National Park. It is connected to Beziers by a regular bus service. The train from Beziers stops at Magalas, about 6km away.

We live in the house for parts of the year, mainly spring and autumn. We particularly enjoy French village life - buying bread each morning, the public address announcements from the Mairie and a glass of rosé at the cafe. But there is so much more to do: within minutes we can be walking or cycling through the vineyards, the beaches of the Mediterranean are a 40 minute drive away. The National Park offers hill walking and there are the other villages to visit.

What makes this house unique

The house is located in the centre of the village on a small quiet street but only a stones throw from the boulangerie, supermarket and cafe.

Unusually for a house in the centre of the village, it has plenty of open space. The house is set back from the street, there is a small patio behind the kitchen suitable for breakfasts or barbecues with another large area at the rear containing the swimming pool and sun loungers.

The house is equipped with all modern conveniences: wifi washing machine, satellite TV (UK, French and German channels).

As well as the usual bathroom towels we provide beach towels and umbrellas so you can travel light.

Homely, rustic village house

  • 5 of 5

We had a lovely stay for a week in Maria and John's lovely home in Autignac. The house was very well equipped with everything you can think of including fans in the bedrooms and beach towels. It was great having the pool to cool down in and we loved eating in the secluded court yard area in the evening. The village has a small boulangerie and handy little supermarche and for a bigger shop we went to the huge Carrefour in Serignan.

We all had a great time kayaking in Roquebrun and the kids (13,15 and 31!) really enjoyed Parcours Adventure near Beziers and Beziers itself was really interesting to explore.

Would love to return one day. Thank you Maria and John for sharing your house with us.

Wonderful Stay!

  • 5 of 5

We have just returned home from a wonderful holiday based in this village house in Autignac. We've stayed in Langedoc before but my husband and I agreed that this is the best house and location so far.

The house is a real home from home, spotless and has everything you could possibly need. We loved the way the old stone house had been so carefully renovated, maintaining many features but with a modern feel too. My only reservation would be the steep stairs to the two upstairs bedrooms for young children or anyone unsteady on their feet. The outside spaces were lovely and the pool was a godsend in the high temperatures.

The village is quiet and has everything you need - boulangerie, épicerie, supermarché, pharmacie and café. The cafe also did good lunches and evening meals and we ate there a few times. The locals were friendly and welcoming. Autignac is a perfect base for exploring the region. Maria and John (the owners) were a joy to deal with. We are already talking about returning!
