Maison Acanthe: spacious, character farmhouse with private pool, near Madiran

Updated: 10-Oct-2016
Beautifully restored farmhouse near Madiran, Hautes-Pyrénées, 12m pool with steps, stunning views, beautiful garden with sweeping lawn, peaceful location

This is a 'get away from it all' holiday location. The house is on the edge of Quartier Bidos, a small hamlet of 8 houses. It is part of the commune of St. Lanne in the most northern region of the Hautes-Pyrénées. There is ample living space including a living room which has been converted from the adjoining Chai (wine store) and has a high, vaulted ceiling and original beams and a beautiful open plan kitchen which looks out onto the dining area by the large inglenook fireplace. There is a 12 metre x 5 metre pool with Roman steps at the bottom of the 3/4 acre garden which is visible from the house and the terraces. And new for 2016 is an electric pool cover to help keep the water temperature just right for you. Here you can sit, drink in hand at the end of the day and watch the sun go down and nothing will disturb your peace at night but the sounds of nature - a nocturnal chorus of owls, crickets and frogs. There is also a covered terrace for eating outside with uninterrupted views east of the vineyards and south of the mountains and a smaller terrace both overlooking the garden. This is a deeply rural area so expect to drive through acres of vineyards and sunflowers on your way to the shops. A car is essential.

About the Owner

After spending an idyllic 3 week holiday in this beautiful house, we had the fantastic opportunity of realising a long term dream of actually buying a property in France...and not just any property, but this gem of a farmhouse.

We were bowled over, not just by the house and gardens, but with the beauty and tranquillity of the area and the friendliness of the local people. We still have to pinch ourselves sometimes!

This is our dream holiday home - we hope it is yours too.

A great property in a stunning setting

  • 5 of 5

grandparents, parents +12 week-old baby, had a terrific weeks holiday in this lovely property. The setting couldn't be bettered for its stunning view and peaceful surroundings, and with its lovely private garden and pool. The house was well-equipped and everything worked. The local restaurant was excellent and great value for money. this is a lovely rural area but lots of nice places to explore such as Marciac.

Wonderful views and pool

  • 5 of 5

We booked the house for its fantastic view and pool - both of which turned out to be even better than in the photos. House is well thought out, very clean, with great internet, BBC on the TV and a fridge that makes ice (something for everyone!) Fantastic area for cycling - wonderful views at every turn and absolutely no traffic. Could not have been better. Thank you Tracey and Mark.

Very Good place to stay

  • 4 of 5

Pretty immaculate facilities

Good sized rooms with everything you want

Lovely gardens and great pool with genuine mountain views

Quiet area, hardly any noise at night

Plenty of wildlife (non insect) which can be noisy at night

The best , medium priced, restaurant we have ever eaten in in UK or France in Madiran - fantastic local wines

Some lovely villages 30-45mins away

Minor Gripes - Intermittent TV reception (seems common in France ) and we didn't get on with the electric pool cover so left it open

A recommended stay

A perfect place to relax and unwind!

  • 5 of 5

This house truly is a gem and was enjoyed by our large family including six adults and three children. We have been holidaying in France for the past 6 years and this is our clear favourite, for which we broke our rule and returned for a second visit.

It did not disappoint and Tracey and Mark, the new owners, have even managed to improved it!!

The property is very spacious and beautifully maintained and well equiped for a relaxing stay. The garden is extremely well kept with lots of different seating areas, all giving you fantastic views of the countryside and mountains beyond.

The pool is fantastic and we spent most of our days lazying around soaking up the sun.

When we could drag ourselves out we found lots of places to visit, from vineyards to the mountains and caves, to the Jazz festival in Marciac.

Tracey and Mark, the owners were very helpful and promptly replied to all our questions before we left making sure we had a superb holiday.

Wonderful house in a stunning spot

  • 5 of 5

Beautifully furnished, clean & well maintained, this house has everything you could possibly need for a self catering holiday. The garden is lovely & has great views from every direction, even to the Pyrenees on a clear day. (We were so impressed with the outside space on arrival, it took us ages to even open up the house!) With temperatures in the mid 30s, our family spent hours in the pool which again is very well maintained. Although remote there are plenty interesting places to visit for a day trip - Pau, Tarbes, Hautacam & we even squeezed in a visit to San Sebastián. After many great self catering holidays in France over the years, this house is definitely our favourite yet.

Wonderful rural holiday

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful holiday at Bidos, where 7 of us stayed for a family celebration being held nearby. The house is huge and very well equipped - we wanted for nothing and were even able to host a party for 20 family and friends without difficulty. The garden and pool are beautiful and very well kept. Views from the house and garden are stunning and we were able to enjoy them while eating our meals on the shaded terrace. This is the ideal property for an away from it all holiday in a beautiful rural location.

From the Owner

We first came to the Midi-Pyrénées several years ago for the combination of accessibility of both mountains and seaside. Over time, we have gravitated towards less touristy areas so that we can enjoy the peace and tranquillity of the countryside as well as go out cycling as a family in quiet country lanes away from the hustle and bustle.

Nearest Barpub : Madiran at 3 Kilometres Nearest Ferry : Santander, Bilbao at 180 Kilometres Nearest Golf : Eugenie les Bains at 40 Kilometres Nearest Train : Tarbes at 30 Kilometres Nearest Motorway : Garlin at 20 Kilometres Nearest Restaurant : Madiran, Aydie at 3 Kilometres Nearest Ski : Tourmalet, la Mongie, Saint-Lary Soulan at 120 Kilometres Nearest Beach : St Jean de Luz/Biarritz/Anglet/Hendaye at 160 Kilometres Car: necessary

St. Jean de Luz and Biarritz are on the Atlantic coast. Anglet is the resort to visit if surfing is your passion and Hendaye is a lovely safe family-friendly beach for children. Or, if you fancy going across the border to Spain, St Sebastian is easy to get to. All are about 2 hours drive away and well worth the trip.

Lourdes (Ryanair from Stansted) is 50 minutes away. Toulouse (BA, EasyJet) is 2.5 hours and Bordeaux (BA, Easyjet) is 2.0 hours. EasyJet also fly to Biarritz from Gatwick, 1hr 40 mins away. TGV goes to Bordeaux from Paris and takes 3 hours. Change there for local train service to Mont de Marsan where you can hire a car. From there it's an hour's drive to the house.

Madiran is 3 km away and has a baker, post office and restaurants. For shopping, Maubourguet is 13km, Riscle 11k, Aire sur l'Adour 15km. There are market days in all the local towns, particularly special are Saturday markets at Vic en Bigorre and Aire sur L'Adour. There's a local restaurant at Aydie (3km) where the Ceps Omelettes are legendary. In Madiran there's Le Prieuré, also very good. World famous chef, Michel Guérard has 3 restaurants at the spa town of Eugénie Les Bains (45 mins drive).

Further Details:

Marciac holds its annual International Jazz Festival during the first two weeks in August when the whole town is taken over by music. There's waterskiing at Cahuzac, a frozen in time 16th Century Chateau de Mascaras at Garlin, canoeing at Aire sur l'Adour and for wine enthusiasts there are many chateaux literally on the doorstep to visit for local wine-tastings where you will be warmly welcomed by the locals. There is a falconry and animal centre nearby as well as an exhibition centre which has regular exhibitions of paintings, sculptures and photography from all over France. The Haras Anglo-Arab stud is at Tarbes and has regular open days and displays. A trip to Lourdes in the Pyrenees is only an hour away and a fascinating experience with mountains all around. There are flower festivals during the Spring. The village of Madiran is at the centre of this famous wine making region and holds its annual Fête in mid August. This is when all the local wine producers gather to show off their stock and there's plenty of opportunity both to taste and, more importantly, to buy.

For cycling enthusiasts, the area is great for both serious cyclists and children alike with sufficiently challenging hills for those who want them. Traffic in the area is light so cycling through the countryside is a real pleasure. And for followers of the Tour de France, the Tour passes every year in and around Pau and up in the Pyrénées nearby as well as passing through many local routes, towns and villages.

There are many wonderful local restaurants, not forgetting those at the spa town of Eugénie les Bains (45 minutes drive) where world famous chef Michel Guérard produces food to die for. On the doorstep in Madrian is fine-dining le Prieuré and for more traditional French fare l'Estanquet. A few minutes drive in the opposite direction is le Relais d'Aydie - people travel miles for their cêpes omelette.

In terms of climate, June to the end of August is very hot indeed and this is the time when the pool comes into its own. April and May are delightful months when spring flowers are at their best, the landscape is bursting with new life and the temperature is absolutely perfect. The months of September and October also have lovely balmy weather when you can still enjoy meals outside.

For maps of the local area for cycling and walking you need IGN maps 1634 E Riscle, 1734 O Plaisance and 1644 E Lembeye.

From the Owner

Apart from the beautiful house, garden and 12m x 5m swimming pool, with new electric pool cover being installed for 2016 to keep the pool warmer and to extend the swimming season, this area is perfect for a relaxing French experience. There are plenty of small market towns in the area, local events and an abundance of local vineyards for as much wine tasting as you can manage. The area is perfect for cycling for adults and children alike - plenty of challenging hills if you want them or safe country lanes with not so many hills for the children. There is also canoeing not too far away, local restaurants and the seaside and mountains all within two hours drive.
