About Bridget Holmes

We live in England but thanks to family roots, love having holidays in Spain. We are very fortunate to have taken this dream-like property over , complete with very capable and discrete caretaker. We hope to spend more time here especially in the winter. We love unspoilt countryside and the sea and find Algeciras ,a huge port ,a really exciting place.

Our family loves walking ,cycling swimming ,golf and dancing. It is a really Spanish area ,perfect if you want to speak Spanish and eat delicious local food.

There is as much to do to here as any one could want and likewise, it is the perfect place for relaxing and gazing or reading .

The garden is amazing.

Bridget Holmes purchased this villa in 2014

Why Bridget Holmes chose Costa del Sol (Cadiz Province)

This is a very special house.

It is like walking into paradise!

We rented it for two summers and feel incredibly lucky to have been able to take it over from our delightful predecessors.

It lies on the beach in the real Spain adjacent to unspoilt and protected nature reserves, El Estrecho and Los Alcornocales. Here you can go walking ,cycling on good paths and dip into the rock pools and lakes!

The sandy beach less than a minutes walk has a lifeguard and cleaning in the summer. There is kiosk on our road leading onto the sand and 15 minutes to the east end of the beach are family friendly restaurants bars cafés and shops. There is kite surfing and canoeing.Tarifa is 12 km away for wind surfers . Golfers have the best courses 1/2 hour away and there are lovely towns and Cadiz to visit nearby.

What makes this villa unique

Easy access from three airports, parking outside house.

The caretaker ,Manolo is available if needed .He and his partner ,Erika, maintain the property and are very helpful . They live in a small house in the garden. They need to see to the plants and pool.

She is also a trained carer who enjoys minding children and the elderly.

Extra cleaning while you are out, can be arranged. And you can enquire if you would like help with the BBQ and garden lighting.

The high ceilinged, two storey plus roof-terraced house is cool in summer ,needing only air conditioning in the one south facing room ,fans in the other bedrooms and then log burners for winter.

Unspoilt Spain, real Spanish food and culture.

Friendly local people ,bars ,restaurants within 10 minutes walk.

Walking ,cycling ,sea activities, golf, horse riding and more.

Beautiful ,private ,tranquil garden and pool within high walls .Loads of sun all day and shade too . In and out door dining areas and BBQs.Roof terraces with view over Straits of Gibraltar to Africa. Loads of wild life.

Interesting old towns and cities nearby and the bustling port town of Algeciras down the road.

Lots of space, great location and lovely gardens

  • 4 of 5

We loved our stay in Getares. The villa is in a great location, close to the beach & restaurants with an amazing private garden. It has tons of space and is well equipped for a relaxing stay. We used the bikes, did day trips to Tarifa and Gibraltar and enjoyed time at the beach and around the pool. We would think about staying again if we were ever to come back to this area. Don't expect a formal, pristine villa - its older and very relaxed and comfortable - perfect for families.

Owner's Response: We are very glad that you really appreciated Casa Sajama and were comfortable despite the unusual heat wave while you there. It would be lovely to have you back again.

Very nice classic villa!

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed the 3 terraces overlooking the harbor in the evening...The very shaded outside dining area with the big wood/charcoal grills, and the gas burner for paella! The pool and cabanna, "Bridgets Bar" were used frequently...Perfect for those late afternoon Spanish tapas. We really appreciated the garden...Well kept, with an incredible variety of flowers, trees, and cactus! The kitchen is well appointed, as are the family room, formal dining room, and the bedrooms. Fantastic views from every window! Very short walk to the nice clean beach! We will be back, but for longer stay next time!

The villa is lovely. The most impressive feature is the grounds with numerous places places to relax

  • 4 of 5

A very spacious villa with lots of character. Great for hanging around in. Although the pool is small it is great for a dip and the grounds around it are lovely. Two barbecue areas and lots of outside seating.

The ground floor is dark and cool. Great views from the roof terraces.

Top spot for teens, peaceful gardens for adults!

  • 5 of 5

This is a very lovely place, especially to take teens on holiday, which was what we did (five16-18 year olds). The house is really charming, so lovely to be in, but not so precious that you're on tenterhooks with younger family. It feels like a home. It's huge and very well-equipped, with a lovely outdoor eating area. There are quite seperated bedrooms so no noise perceived from those living with you!

The garden is perfect and it does feel like a little paradise. I felt that the gardener could possibly pay it a bit more attention - I had to restrain myself form doing so myself. The planting and pool are really lovely.

The beach is seconds away - fantastic for youngsters wanting to be independent, though perhaps not as beautiful (Gibraltar is opposite, it's a port, there are lots of very big ships around) as an aethetically beach-loving pair of adults might dream of, we did tend to drive to other beaches.

But... the town can also be accessed by foot along the beach and, as long as they have a torch on their phones, your loved teens are entirely safe being independent, both day and night.

I'm writing this a year down the line, prompted by a recent stay elsewhere and the recollection that I meant to write this review last year. It's a lovely and charming place, fantastic location, and you won't find anywhere better to holiday in the area with teenage children.

Beautiful house and garden in excellent location

  • 5 of 5

Our family have stayed in many lovely holiday houses but we all agreed that this was the best we have been to. The house and gardens are lovely and spacious, the pool is perfect and the beach is only a very short walk away. The roof top views are stunning. Shops and restaurants are close by and a huge added bonus is the use of the 4 bikes. We had several enjoyable rides to Algeiras and the lighthouse. Lovely views of Gibraltar. Very helpful information and some welcome supplies on arrival. All in all a fabulous place for a holiday.

Owner's Response: Thank you for taking the time to tell us this. It seems you appreciated the house, garden and location as much as we do! And we are glad you found the information helpful. It does make a difference when you don't know the area ,to make the most of everything without hassle. Yes they are great bikes aren't they? And there are miles of new bike paths .

Special interest holidays:

We have bought 4 new excellent hybrid bikes, 1 large and 3 medium sized ,with helmets and water bottles. There are maps with scenic ,easy and challenging cycle routes.

There is one large mans and 3 ladies/older child wet suits.

There maybe an assortment of body boards for the sea and floats for the

Pool but as these don't last long best to expect to buy your own at the Chinese bazaar on the beach.

It is possible to dive ,canoe, paddle board, kite ski, swim or just lie on the beach! Actual surfing and wind surfing is best done at Tarifa 25 minutes away.

Walking opportunities are fantastic with marked paths of varying lengths along the coast of and in the Alcornocales. There is an abundance of birds and of course wild flowers and wonderful trees with stunning views over the sea and deserted beaches to Africa.

People fish day and night from our beach and surrounding incredible rock formations which are due to The Eupoean and African continental plates pushed together.

Coast/Beach:

The Beach of Getares bay is less than a minute on foot from the garden gate. The sea is perfect for swimming with easy access into lovely clear water. We are at the rural end of the safe, golden sandy beach which leads on to the National Park.

At the eastern end of the beach it is more lively with cafes, bars, ice-cream parlours ,restaurants. And shops . There is occasional free entertainment. The beach is cleaned nightly in the summer and lifeguards are present.

Travel:

Gibraltar airport is fourteen miles away, with daily flights from Heathrow , Luton and Gatwick ,Birmingham and shortly to also fly from Bristol. Car hire is available at the airport and the car is usually collected from over the frontier in La Linea (easy walking distance) where it is cheaper.

Malaga airport is 92 miles distant and one and a half hours should be allowed for by car (entirely motorway). Similarly with the airport at Jerez.

Distances:

The villa is within the village of Getares and three miles from the centre of the large port town of Algeciras from where regular ferries run to Ceuta and Morocco. Twelve miles to the west is the old Moorish town of Tarifa, internationally famous for its 7km beach with wind- and kite-surfing. Cycle and horse trekking are available, so also whale and dolphin watching. Gibraltar is interesting but the towns of Cadiz , Jerez , Seville and many others are well worth a day trip.

Further Details:

Near Algeciras is the parish of San Garcia with a supermarket, banks, cash points and pharmacy. Larger supermarkets are to be found around the town. San Garcia has a large well sign-posted and modern hospital for emergencies.

There are numerous restaurants ,all very authentic Spanish food.

There is a spectacular and remarkably inexpensive train journey via fine scenery to the old town of Ronda which is split by a picturesque 600 ft gorge. Ronda has the second oldest bullring in Spain with its own museum.

Granada with the legendary Alhambra is a drive of an hour and three quarters.

Further up the coast is Puerto de la Duquesa, Puerto Banus, Soto Grande (for the golfers' Mecca, Valderama). Eastwards on the Costa del Sol are the towns of Marbella and Malaga, with Picasso's gallery. Beyond Malaga are the famous caves of Nerja.

Jerez is approximately an hour's drive with the displays of the Spanish School of Riding and sherry tasting.

This area is famous for its birdwatching: it is estimated that upwards of two billion birds cross the Straits, Spring and Autumn, every year on migration.. The local authority has erected observatories at favourable high points. It has been possible in the Spring to see a hundred eagles and kites arrive within one hour.

A two mile walk or drive, having turned left from the villa, passing the lighthouse at the Punta de Carnero (Ram's Head) brings the coast of Africa into view with the Rif Mountains and the highest point, Jebel Musa. There is a high speed ferry service to Morocco from Tarifa port that takes a mere three quarters of an hour for the crossing. One and two-day trips are easily arranged.

From the house, again turning left, three hundred yards gains easy access into the Parque Natural where there is much opportunity to admire the flora, including orchids in season.
