House in Filey, Yorkshire, England - 4 Minutes Walk To Golden Sandy Beach Yet Only 2 Minutes Walk To Town.

Built in 1830, this grade 2 listed house retains all of it's charm, with a wealth of period features, having been sensitively restored and brought into the 21st century. It's equipped to a high standard to ensure a real home from home feeling, with comfy beds with white cotton bed linen and towels, board games and toys, a play station and everything you might need for cooking a special meal, from a garlic press to gigantic saucepans. Filey is a hidden gem of a resort, with a 4 mile gently shelving sandy beach which children adore, a golf course, lawn tennis club and sailing club, all of which accept holiday makers. The next bay, Cayton Bay, has a surf school. Walking is fantastic with both the Cleveland Way and Wolds way starting or ending in Filey. There's a small station with trains to York, or you can drive in about an hour and it's well worth a visit. The North Yorkshire Moors steam trains run from Pickering, where you can stop off at Goathland, better known as Aidensfield in Heartbeat, or head through to Whitby and see the delights of the northern end of the moors. Filey is the home of the Yorkshire Cobble, the oldest style of fishing boat, based on Viking longboats, and they are still used today by some of the towns fishermen. The house is warm and cosy in the winter, and you feel amazing after a long walk on the beach but it's cool and welcoming after a hot day lazing in the summer sunshine. It's a very spacious house, great for sharing with friends or family, allowing room to be separate and room to be together. We rarely accept pets and ask guests not to smoke in the house.

Notes on accommodation: The house has a great many stairs and is therefore not ideal for the elderly or disabled. There is unrestricted parking on the street in front of the house plus parking for 1 car at the back of the house. Outside: The house has a very small gravelled garden in front and a paved area behind but essentially outside space is very restricted, however the band stand park is about 100 yards away with many benches and places to sit. Glen Gardens and the beach are both only 4 minutes walk away and so there's an abundance of places to enjoy sitting outside, barbecuing or picnicking. There are 2 swimming pools in Filey open to the public and a large open air paddling pool beside the sea for smaller children. The "Country Park" above Filey Brigg is a nice walk away or you can jump of the "Filey Hopper" if you prefer. Utility Room: Washing machine and tumble drier, sink and drainer, airer, iron and ironing board. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: White cotton bedding and towels are included in the price and are changed weekly. Beach towels are not supplied. Mid week linen changes or cleaning can be arranged, but a further charge will be levied. Other: The dining room is something special, comfortably seating 14 around a large table, perfect for family celebration meals. A huge Victorian oil lamp hangs above the table (not to be used due to risk of fire) and a sense of informal grandeur prevails!

The property is super, very well equipped, lovely big rooms, very central and near the beach. We all had a fantastic week celebrating an 80th birthday and were toasty warm inside on the coldest days this winter. Brilliant.

Lovely building, kept to a fairly high standard

This is a lovely building which is kept to a pretty high standard. The decor is plain and functional and the furniture and the fittings are well suited to the building. There was a few minor points of concern during our stay but were dealt with suitably by the house keeper. It's a shame there isn't a suggestion box, as there were one or two things that I think would improve the place to some extent. Overall good value.

We do encourage guests to let us know of any suggestions for improvements, so I'll give you a ring to find out what you'd like to see done and implement them if we can. Having now chatted, I'll ask Tanya to tell our guests that we supply heat resistant oven cloths, not gloves, so no future guests think there's nothing to use! I'll also ask her to point out the auto control on the oven and double check that there is no loo without paper when our guest arrive.

What a lovely house stayed for Christmas 🎄 ( or any time ) this house has everything you need for a family getaway ( and in a great seaside resort ) all the rooms are very spacious and the decor is very tastefully done in keeping with the style of the house with you own wishing well at the of the street ( great for our grandchildren to make a wish on Christmas Eve ) thank you all for making our stay a very special Christmas. ⚓️

Brilliant family short break

The house is very large and really lovely. It's very comfortable, has everything you could wish for. There are several bathrooms and a big dining room and kitchen, so we could all sit down together to eat. The lounge is also really big with plenty of room for everyone to sit comfortably. It was very good value for money. We stayed as a family group, and as we had 2 children and a small dog with us, the location being right next to the beach and the town is fantastic. The beach and the Brigg at Filey are beautiful and we spent most of our time there. I think it's the most dog friendly town I've been to, with dogs being allowed in all the pubs, a number of the shops and most of the cafes. Every person we spoke to in the town was so friendly. There's a great little tap room for real ale and everything is Filey is really cheap (especially when you live down south!) Communication with Melanie, the owner and Tanya, the housekeeper, was very good and very pleasant. Highly recommended. We would definitely return.

Amazing house and facilities

The house is amazing and ideal for my 70th birthday family get together. The write up and photographs do not do it justice it is much larger and nicer than they show.

My only observation would be that there some minor maintenance issues such as several blown light bulbs and showers which did not drain properly however this did not distract from our enjoyment and woul certainly return.

Other guests have told me I should improve the photos I use on the website! I'm really sorry that you had blown light bulbs and poorly draining showers to contend with. Savona has been fully occupied every day since early June and changeovers can be very, very busy between 10am and 4pm and sometimes everything just cannot be checked. I guess on this occasionTanya and the girls just hadn't had time to check that all the lights work and that the showers are flowing well. We'll make both of these a priority before the next changeover so thanks for bringing them to our attention. Needless to say we'd love to welcome you back for another holiday at Savona!

About Melanie Welford-Carroll

We bought Savona to use as a "home from home" weekend get away, to help our daughter who suffered badly with asthma and allergies. The sea air helps her to breathe easily and she hardly needs to use her inhalers when we're in Filey. We rarely allow pets at the house to help ensure it's as low allergy as possible and now that she's 17 she's so much better. We still all really enjoy staying at Savona but now go with a house full of teenagers! It's lovely to read the guest book and see that the house is bringing pleasure to so many other families and that so many birthdays, anniversaries and special family reunions are hosted at the house.

Why Melanie Welford-Carroll chose Filey

Filey is the nearest seaside town to drive to from our house and, unlike its near neighbours of Scarborough and Bridlington, is really quiet and unspoilt. It's the kind of town where I'm happy to let my children wander around the shops and go to the park. When we bought Savona we found out that it belonged to the brother of my uncle, so that was a huge coincidence!

What makes this house unique

When we stay, our children bring friends and they can have their own space, watching what they want on tv, playing music or just chilling out without disturbing us and our friends. There's plenty to keep them occupied, from the usual games and barbecues on the beach, to surfing lessons or body boarding. Being 17 and 15 they love the independence of walking to the local Italian restaurant or shops without parents and we're happy to let them. We enjoy a walk on the beach followed by a huge brunch with bacon and eggs, then reading the Sunday papers. Bliss!

Filey Brigg is another family favourite, with masses of rock pooling and crashing waves over the rocks. It's a photographer's heaven. Be sure to refer to the tide tables first though, as you must allow time to walk back!

Only a 4 minute walk to the 4 mile, clean, safe, golden sandy beach of Filey bay, bounded to the south by Flamborough Head and Bempton Cliffs (RSPB reserve) and to the north by Filey Brigg. Divers can enjoy the wreck of the Bonhomme Richard, sunk in 1779, which has recently won Heritage Lottery funding. Sailing is popular in the bay and paragliders fly off the Brigg, whilst surfers ride the waves at neighbouring Cayton Bay. There's plenty to do or you can just relax on the beach and watch.


It's easiest to come to Filey by car or train. Once at the house a car is not necessary for shopping, restaurants, the beach or other local facilities. However there's a lot of places further a field to explore so we would recommend a car.

The nearest airports are Durham Tees Valley (68 miles), Leeds Bradford (70 miles), Newcastle (105 miles) and Manchester (127 miles). The nearest port is Hull (45 miles) with sailings to Rotterdam and Zeebrugger.


Located 2 minutes walk to the centre of Filey (bakery, restaurants etc) and about 15 minutes drive to N Yorks Moors, with its stone built villages and pretty pubs, including Goathland, (Aidensfield in Heartbeat), Staithes (Old Jack's Boat, CBeebies and Captain James Cook's home), gorgeous Runswick Bay, Robin Hoods Bay (coast to coast walk), Whitby\Ravenscar (Bram Stoker's Dracula), Pickering's North Yorkshire Moors Railway (Hogwart's Express), or slightly further afield, Thirsk (James Herriott).

Booking Notes:
Telephone or email your preferred dates. I will then send a booking form which should be returned within 10 days with a 25% deposit, (either bank transfer, cheque or credit card). The balance is payable 8 weeks before the start of the holiday. On receipt of full payment, access details and housekeeper contact details are supplied.

Changeover Day:
Fridays are the usual changeover day for either weekend breaks or full week holidays, and Mondays for mid week breaks. Standard arrival time is 4pm and departure is 10am.

Notes on prices:
We also advertise on Cottages For You website (property ref 19757). We aim to be substantially cheaper on Owners Direct than C4Y, although the saving during peak summer weeks is minimal as I have to pay a penalty for every owner booking I take. At other times of the year you can expect to save around 20% or more over Cottages For You price for the same holiday.
As a guide our 3 night weekend break is about 70% of the full week price. Mid week breaks are great value, in low season working out at £8.03 per person per night, based on full occupancy of 14 guests - a great deal for the newly retired and those not tied to school holidays.

Owner's Cancellation Policy

  • 50% refund for cancellations more than 30 days before check-in date.
  • 100% refund for cancellations more than 60 days before check-in date.
  • Service Fee fully refunded on cancellations that qualify for 100% refund.
