5 Bed House w/Great Views/V.Lg Sitting Rm/High Spc Kitchen-Suisse Normande

Updated: 06-Dec-2016
Stunning House Nr. Clecy, Suisse Normande, Calvados. V.Quiet Location,Great Walks, Activities and Historical interest. Beach 45 Min. Fly/ferry from UK

"Ancienne Ecole" is approximately 150 years old and is situated on top of a hill at the edge of a small village next to the church. It is surrounded by rolling hills, fields and stunning far reaching panoramic views. The house has a grand feel with high ceilings, very thick stone walls and large windows that allow the house to be flooded in natural light throughout the day.

A lot of the documented history of the building was lost in the second wold war, but what is definitely known is that it used to be the old village school and mayors office up until 30 years ago. Over the last 5 years the house has been renovated to a very high spec, whilst retaining many of the original features including a beautiful wooden staircase.

When you arrive at the house you enter through the front door into a large hallway with exposed stonework on one side, parafeuille floor tiles and a chandelier that hangs from the 4 meter high ceiling. The doors from the hallway lead into the living room and kitchen. The kitchen is a good size with space for people to cook and relax at the same time. There is a dining table, modern range cooker, american fridge freezer, and all the essentials needed to cook up the delicious local produce. The other side of the entrance hall is a very large sitting room with wide oak flooring, three large sofas, an armchair, wood burning stove and plenty of books, board games and a music system. There is nothing more relaxing on sunny or rainy days than watching the sky through the large east and west facing windows!

The old wooden staircase takes you up to the first floor that has four double bedrooms and a bathroom with shower. One of the bedrooms has an ensuite with a bath that allows you to soak in privacy whilst the evening sun floods in and the cows munch away in the fields surrounding. The staircase then leads up to the loft which has one double bedroom with a very large velux and stunning views over the fields and valleys. A great spot for watching the birds of prey or enjoying the view of the mist rolling through the valley in the morning!

The house has a garden of 1/3 of an acre that surrounds it on three sides with a couple of apple trees and a plum tree. The location is very peaceful and private.

Ancienne Ecole is situated in the heart of the Suisse Normande which is in Calvados, Lower Normandy. This is arguably one of the most beautiful parts of Normandy with its rolling hills, gorges and stunning light and scenery. There are loads of easily accessible walks in the area and a beautiful river 5km from the house that is great for canoeing and pedalos. There is also a golf course, fishing, horse riding, mountain biking, rock climbing and a velo rail close to the house. This area is very easy to get to from the UK with budget flights from Southend to Caen (30 mins from house) or regular ferries to Caen, Le Havre or Calais.

A great house for a family holiday, group of friends or just a couple looking to get away from it all. It is possible to just relax at the house and do very little for a whole week, or to go out and explore the beautiful countryside, Bayeux, Caen, William the Conquerors castle in Falaise, the local restaurants... the list goes on and there is a lot more to do than is possible to fit into a week!

We spent a wonderfully relaxing few days here last summer. The house is simply but stylishly decorated with stunning views and a cosy wood burner. In an incredibly peaceful location but only minutes drive from family and outdoor activities.

The local town has some great restaurants to try, the bakery was a favourite with our boys!

Great place for a family holiday

  • 5 of 5

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in France, the house was in a great location for us, easy to get to from the Ferry but great for lots of walks in the countryside. It was a good base for lots of family activities and there were plenty of things to do with the children, we didn't feel like we saw it all in one week. The house is spacious and has a relaxed character and feel to it, there is a lovely wood burner in the lounge that would be really cosy on a cold day. The bedrooms were very comfortable and the views from the back bedrooms on to the fields and countryside were beautiful, particularly in the mornings.

The combination of lots of fun activities, fresh air walks and a lovely house made this a five star holiday for us.

Wonderful House in stunning and peaceful

  • 5 of 5

Stayed in August 2014 with our two young children and friends. The house is beautiful with lots of charm and character. It is ideal for families, with lots of space inside and outside.

The location is very peaceful - I don't think we or the kids have ever slept so well! The bedrooms have amazing views across the fields and there are plenty of walks on the door step to explore this stunning area. I would recommend a visit to the local river in Clecy, which has lots of activity’s for families and pretty walks.

Great place for the family

  • 5 of 5

Me, my wife and 2 girls stayed for a week last August with some friends. The accommodation is clean and comfortable and very roomy with nice high ceilings and a good size garden for the kids to run about in. It is situated on top of a hill and has great views across the valley. It is very peaceful and there is plenty do in if you like outdoor activities and it's not far from some lovely beaches and loads of WW2 bunkers if you like that sort of thing. Would definitely go again well worth the money!!

From the Owner

We brought our house in 2007 having searched an area of France that was close enough to the UK for holidays by car, and that gave us the beautiful countryside and far reaching views we craved. Our original plan was to live at the house all year round but five years later and with the house finally renovated and + 2 children we decided to take the easy option and stay in the UK close to family! The Suisse Normande is one of the most beautiful parts of Normandy with its rolling hills, gorges and stunning light and scenery that have been painted by numerous artists over the years. There are loads of easily accessible walks in the area that are marked on the map with some starting a few meters from the front door and loads of activities and great day trips to be had For all those reason we still use the house all of the time, but we book our time in early so all dates the house is available show up in the ownersdirect calendar!

45 minutes drive to the sandy Normandy beaches (including D-Day beaches). About 90 minutes to the more sandy Atlantic coast. Both are stunning

Travel is easy with a short flight from Southend (near to London) to Caen (Caen is 30 mins from the house) with budget airline Flybe (prices as low as £80 return!). You can then hire a car from Caen.

If you would prefer to bring your own car then there are ferries from Portsmouth to Ouistreham (45 minutes to the house), Le Havre (1.5 hours from the house) and Dieppe (2 hours from the house). It is also possible to get the ferry from Dover to Calais (or Channel Tunnel) and to drive from Calais (about 4.5 hours). Another option is the Eurostar from London to Paris and then a connecting train from Paris to Caen (about a 2 hour train journey from Paris to Caen).

You will definitely need a car because the house is in a rural setting, but can easily hire one in Caen or Flers.

15 minutes drive to nearest town with supermarket. Caen Castle and Cathedral (30 mins), Bayeux Tapestry (45 mins), Falaise Castle (William the Conquers castle - 30 minutes), Honfleur (75 minutes) and Mont Saint-Michel (90 minutes). Amazing health spa (15 minutes). 2 swimming pools (15 minutes). Too many other local attractions and sites of interest to list in here. Just google "calvados" and "suisse normande" for full list or check out our pinterest site https://www.pinterest.com/henrylestrange/places-to-go-in-and-around-the-suisse-normande/

Further Details:

About 45 mins from the house you can get to the D-day beaches which are great for both the history and to relax on some large sandy beaches. The Atlantic coast is also accessible for days out and takes about an hour and a half. There is also the Bayeux Tapestry, Falaise Castle (William the Conquers castle), Honfleur and Mont St Michel (couple of hours away), and numerous others points of historical interest and Château’s close by. If you want to get the adrenalin pumping there is hand gliding close to the house and bungee jumping and zip wires at AJ Hackett (about 20KM away).

All of the fresh air and exercise means you can afford to indulge yourself at one of the local patisseries or in one of the numerous local restaurants! Local produce includes apples (Cider and Calvados) and Camembert cheese which are often included in local dishes. If you want to relax there is a prestigious spa and health resort 15 minutes from the house and an award winning golf course that you can see in the distance from the house and is about 5KM away.

From the Owner

The house is newly renovated with a view to living in it rather than as a holiday rental. It is very well equipped with a lovely range cooker, american style fridge freezer etc. We love the stunning 20KM from the house and the number of outdoor activites: fishing, horse riding, mountain biking, rock climbing and a velo rail which allows a group of you to cycle on a disused railway line. Within an hour of the house you can get to the historic and beautiful D-day beaches or slightly further is The Atlantic coast. There is also the Bayeux Tapestry, Falaise Castle (William the Conquers), Honfleur and Mont St Michel (couple of hours away). There is also a prestigious spa 15 mins drive away and a great golf course which you can see in the distance from the house.
