We have had such a beautiful week here at Le Tilleul. Weather has been gorgeous, coupled with fantastic views from the patio - great food and wine - what more could you want? Loved canoeing on the river Dronne, our visit to Brantome and the brilliant Friday market at Riberac. Would recommend Jemaye for both walks around the lake and the beautiful beach and facilities. We enjoyed watching the bats at dusk and the stars at night are simply stunning - no light pollution here. Lucy and John, Midlands - August 2014

We have just completed our third stay at this property. The house has always been very clean and in excellent condition upon arrival, the location is wonderful - stunning views over open countryside and a well-positioned terrace to enjoy them while having a meal, drink, afternoon tea or simply daydreaming. The atmosphere is very tranquil. The pool is large and is shared with 5 other properties and the tennis court is a welcome bonus. Richard and Karen, Norfolk - September 2013

We have had a glorious week here in glorious weather. All amenities have been excellent. As seasoned visitors to France it has been a revelation to discover the beauties of this almost secret part of the country. Vera and Family, Cheltenham - August 2013

Le Grand Etang de La Jemaye - a large lake in the Double Forest - has a good sandy beach with safe swimming area (lifeguard), a diving platform plus fishing, canoeing and walking/cycling trails. There are cafes, a large restaurant/bar, shop and picnic areas.

There are also excellent river beaches on the River Dronne at Aubeterre and St Aulaye - all are only 15 minutes drive.

On the Atlantic coast there are a number of excellent resorts, the nearest is the stylish resort of Royan 80 miles away.

Bergerac Airport is only 35 miles away (1 hour) - with many low cost flights from UK airports.

Bordeaux Airport is 72 miles away - 1 hour and 20 minutes - has BA flights and budget flights.

By car from the Channel ferry ports, the distances/timings:

Calais - 498 miles - about 8 hours

St Malo - 320 miles - about 6 hours

Caen - 325 miles - about 6 hours

Cherbourg - 405 miles - about 7 hours

By train, it's the EuroStar to Lille or Paris, then the TGV to Angouleme - 40 miles away by car.

There are many interesting and historic places to explore. Brantome, Bourdeilles, Bergerac, Perigueux and St Emilion are all less than an hour's drive and are brilliant for sightseeing (and wine tasting!).

Slightly further afield, the 17th century Chateau de Hautefort, Sarlat, Domme, the world famous cave paintings at Lascaux, the magnificent city of Bordeaux, the vast dunes of the Atlantic coast, Cognac and its distilleries and the historic port of La Rochelle are all easily accessible.

Further Details:

The bustling market town of Riberac is just 4 miles away. It has a wide range of independent shops, hypermarkets, banks, restaurants and other facilities including canoe and bike hire. The famous Friday market is a must for visitors and is as much a social occasion as a shopping opportunity. The town has a music and arts festival, a wonderful cinema and some really good cafes.

It is just 7 miles to Aubeterre - a very old and beautiful hill top village, with a great range of interesting shops, restaurants and cafes and classic shady square which hosts a super Sunday morning market.

The pretty village of Vanxains, with its boulangerie, bar, shop and post office nestles in the valley below Champagnac and is only a short cycle ride or pleasant walk away. It's also a nice walk to the Auberge at Le Pauly for a meal in their garden.

  • Notes on accommodation: Domaine de Champagnac is a very attractive collection of traditional farm buildings that were sympathetically renovated by a British architect in 1995. Le Tilleul is half of the original farmhouse and dates back to the late 19th century. French doors lead to an elevated south facing terrace, shaded by a vine covered pergola, with panoramic views beyond the swimming pool and tennis court to the unspoilt rolling countryside. An outdoor dining table and chairs, together with BBQ area, provide the ideal spot for al fresco meals There is also a secluded patio area on a lower level accessed from the basement bedroom, which lends itself for positioning the sun loungers. The house is very well equipped with a library of reading material, including guidebooks and maps of the area. There are also many CDs and DVDs together with indoor and outdoor games. Outside: The extensive gardens of 2.5 acres have been landscaped and planted with fruit trees and a variety of indigenous plants. A large shared swimming pool (14m X 9m) and an all weather tennis court are maintained for guests' enjoyment. The grassed areas provide ample space to play boules. The south facing terrace has a shady pergola and is an ideal spot to enjoy the wonderful views, take in the sun and savour a glass of local wine with your BBQ. The sunken patio - ideal for for a late night drink or a morning cup of tea - also provides a secluded sun bathing spot. A parking area is provided, close to the property within the grounds. Utility Room: The utility area is situated in the basement with a washing machine and clothes driers, ironing board and iron. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: The property is always fully cleaned in advance of guests' arrival. Bed linen is provided together with bath and hand towels (but not pool towels). Other: The property is laid out over 3 floors with a central wooden stairway, giving it a spacious feel throughout. There are exposed timbers in every room and stonework featured on the ground floor. All rooms are decorated and maintained to a high standard.
