About Jacquie Haylett

My mother purchased the property in the early 1980s and initially rented out the ground floor as a 1 bedroom apartment. When she was admitted to nursing home care we fully refurbished and redecorated the whole property to enable it to become a beautiful holiday home.

Having been brought up on Exmoor I love to return to stay in the house with my family as often as time allows, we therefore love the house not only as a holiday cottage but also as our own home.

Why Jacquie Haylett chose Porlock

Spacious comfortable accommodation. Breathtaking sea views. Ideally situated in a peaceful but central location in the picturesque village of Porlock. Perfect base for exploring Exmoor National Park, with beautiful coast and countryside walks from our doorstep. Traditional thatched country pub close by.

What makes this cottage unique

The views from the upstairs of our accommodation across Porlock Bay are magnificent. In clear weather you can view right across the sea to Wales, and often watch hang gliders from the lounge window who take off from Hurlstone Point.

The charming traditional village of Porlock is very friendly with a strong community spirit and hosts many events to suit all ages throughout the year.

Dogs are welcome in many establishments and there are numerous walks directly from our doorstep. There is a good selection of traditional English pubs, restaurants and shops close by. Exmoor is home to a wide variety of wildlife including red deer and Exmoor ponies.

Lots of outdoor activities close by including kayaking; cycling; horse riding; fishing, coasteering, etc, but equally you can just relax and unwind in peace and tranquility. The beautiful scenery inspires artistic creativity.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Thank you very much for the cake and wine, they were very welcome after our journey. This was the first time of visiting Somerset and we have enjoyed every minute of it. There is so much to do and we have run out of time. The view from the windows is fantastic, its a dream place to live. The house was very clean and maintained. We met Chris the housekeeper who was very kind and helpful. It was home from home and we did not want to leave but we will come back and hopefully bring some of the family with us next time. Thank you so much

Thank you so much for letting us rent your lovely cottage home for this week. Both the village and the cottage are beautiful and we cannot tell you how much we enjoyed our stay. Your hospitality has been so kind and we will no doubt be sharing the name of your cottage with friends. Thanks again and we hope to return soon!

We’ve really enjoyed our stay. We have been coming to Porlock for many many years, this is our first stay at Maxwelton, and the best place we’ve stayed. We will definitely be back. Maxwelton is just perfect! Lovely garden, well equipped

Possibly the best accommodation we have had the fortune to stay in. We would love to have had more time here to explore the area. Great views from the kitchen and lounge. A pleasure to come back to each night and situated next to the pub which meant we didn’t have to go far for our entertainment. Very impressed with the cleanliness of the cottage and with all the facilities. Our comments to the housekeeper you do an amazing job. The house is immaculate.

Thank you so much for such lovely accommodation, spotlessly clean on arrival and a beautiful home made sponge! Grandad stayed downstairs in Bracken which suited him very well. We have visited Watersmeet (best tea room ever!), done the North Walk, had a cream tea at Bossington and hiked in Horner woods. The accommodation is amazing and we would definitely come here again – thank you!

A fabulous house in a stunning location

  • 5 of 5

We've just returned from a stay at Maxwelton and Bracken - the house is amazing and catered for our every need, I would highly recommend a stay here. We've been to Porlock many times over the years and stopped in a lot of places, b&bs/hotels/campsites/self catering etc - this is the best place we've stayed in - we loved it!

Communication with Jacquie, the owner was excellent and the lovely welcome gifts of a homemade cake and a bottle of wine from the housekeeper was a lovely touch.

We were a party of 6 - 4 adults, 2 teenagers and 2 dogs. The house is very spacious, very well presented and had everything we needed. The utility room is very useful for the dogs - dog bowls, towels, biscuits and chews were provided. The garden is well maintained with a lovely patio set and BBQ, there is also a seating area for 2 at the top of the garden with views out to the sea - a perfect spot to enjoy a glass of wine whilst watching the sun set.

The kitchen has got the 'home from home' feel and plenty of pots/pans/crockery etc. The lounge is bright, airy and spacious - we particularly liked the window seat and large dining table...and the log burner for the cooler evenings. The bedrooms are spacious, spotlessly clean and felt cosy. The bathroom is finished to a high standard, all towels are provided and there is a constant supply of hot water. My teenage son thoroughly enjoyed sole use of the ground floor apartment, again this is finished to the same high standard as the main house (accessed via an internal door) and contains everything you need.

We absolutely loved the house - thank you Jacquie for allowing us to experience this beautiful place, a true gem in a fabulous village location.

Many thanks

Mrs & Mrs Podmore & family

Owner's Response: Dear Mr and Mrs Podmore We are extremely grateful for the time you have taken to write this extensive review and are delighted that you loved our house and had a wonderful holiday and we are very flattered that you describe it as the best that you have stayed in. We think of our cottage as our second home as it has been in the family since the 1980s and endeavour to keep it at as high a standard as possible for our guests to enjoy. As you mention the downstairs apartment is ideal for giving teenagers or grandparents their own personal space when they would like it without being excluded from the family group. We thank you for your custom and hope to welcome you back when you next visit the Exmoor National Park. Jacquie Haylett

Location and property excellent.

  • 4 of 5

The standard of the property and the facilities provided are extremely good - especially for our "Christmas" stayaway. We greatly appreciated the care and maintenance shown by Mr & Mrs Miles, the Caretakers. The "dog-friendly" aspects of the house were also much appreciated by a couple of visiting Jack Russells!

Splendid!

  • 5 of 5

This is a splendid property suitable for the larger group if the two units are taken together.

The downstairs flat is suitable for a couple if used on its own, but when the connecting door is open you have the run of the whole house so ideal for a family with grandparents or a separate couple staying with them.

When we went in March it was just the two of us and we just had the downstairs flat, but in August there were eight of us so we just used the downstairs flat for sleeping in and spent the rest of the time upstairs with the rest of the family.

The pub next door is handy for evening meals and they do an excellent local cider. We also had fish and chips from the village fish restaurant and found the Costcutters and Spar shops handy for local shopping. Otherwise we went to Morrisons when we were in Minehead.

As for things to do, a week is nothing like long enough! We went up and down Porlock Hill a few times (low gear NOW!) and visited Exmoor, Lynmouth, the Valley of the Rocks, Watersmeet, Tarr Steps, Dunster Castle and Watchet. We went to Watchet on the train using the West Somerset Railway from Minehead so didn't have to worry about parking in Watchet.

The beach at Minehead is good for the kids, although parking can be a problem in August. The loos for Minehead beach are a bit inadequate and leave a lot to be desired.

I think that was our only gripe. Other than that it was a splendid week and I have no hesitation in recommending Maxwelton and Bracken, either together or individually, to anybody. I can also recommend Porlock as a place to stay for touring the area and visiting all the attractions that West Somerset and North Devon have to offer.

Perfect break

The house was very well equipped - everything was good quality , unlike in many rental houses. We had clear instructions, the house was beautifully clean and spacious and the location was very peaceful. We would definitely stay again.

This was our second visit to Maxwelton. The house is comfortably furnished with fabulous views. It was convenient for the village and nearby walks. We are hoping to book up for next year!
