Rural Gite with pool near Allemans Du Dropt, Duras And Eymet, Aquitaine, France

Updated: 21-Oct-2016
Farmhouse in Cambes, Allemans du Dropt, Nr. Duras, Lot et Garonne, Aquitaine / Dordogne, France - Peaceful Country Setting With Swimming Pool

GRAND PAILLEY BAS is a former farmhouse which has recently been completely refurbished with thought and care for your comfort and hotel quality beds. The house sits in grounds of 2 acres with an 8m x 4m x 1.4m (all one depth) pool for your exclusive use with sunbeds on the pool terrace. There is a large covered and furnished terrace next to the pool if your preference is for shade and we have a further very private table and chairs in our small orchard offering total privacy if you wish for total peace and tranquillity. There are 3 double bedrooms, one of which large enough to accommodate a Z bed for the 7th person. There are 2 bathrooms, one en-suite shower room and the other with a bath with overhead shower. Your views looking up to the hamlet are to die for and every other year you will be looking at a sea of sunflowers in between. We are very fortunate to have 360 degrees of panoramic views. We also get wonderful sunsets, so whilst sitting on the terrace, don't forget to look behind you in the evening and have your camera at hand. We are situated on the borders of the Lot et Garonne, Dordogne and Gironde departments all of which offer an abundance of things to do and boast the beautiful and lively Bastide towns in the area. This is perfect cycling country (we can arrange bicycle hire and delivery) if you wish. There is the opportunity to meander down the river by canoe in Allemans du Dropt or on the River Dordogne a little further away. Colourful and vibrant markets in the local towns are most days of the week and in July and August night food markets, where you can sit and dine al fresco are a fun and sociable experience. If you are wine lovers there are numerous chateaux spread across the area and many vineyards to visit. What could be more perfect?

This is the most wonderful chill out destination as all you will hear will be that of bird song, tractors and sometimes combine harvesters which are exciting to watch.

Ian and I live on site so we are immediately at hand should you need any assistance with planning or anything at all. We are very approachable, but also recognise that this is your holiday, so we will not encroach on your privacy. We will clean the pool and test the chemistry each morning and pop round to water the flowers early evening.

If you are would like to learn a new skill, Ian is a professional photographer and runs courses. At an extra charge you would be most welcome to take a course which he will tailor to your needs!

About the Owner

Ian and Fen moved from Southampton to our beautiful Farmhouse here in the Lot et Garonne permanently in April 2013, and what an amazing time we have had.

The house had not been lived in for many years and thus required a lot of work and updating and has been a complete labour of love. We have enjoyed every moment here and have no regrets with our change of lifestyle.

Our house boasts extraordinarily stunning panoramic views and has an aura of peace and tranquillity, whilst not far away there is so much to do and see. We have the best of both worlds!

Ian is a professional photographer and returns to the UK periodically to look after his major clients and is passionate about what he does.

We have both worked in the hospitality industry for many years, so customer service is very important to us. I worked as a Tour Manager and Ian worked for a major hotel group, which I think has given us both a lot of experience in handling personal needs and caring for yours.

France is our home now. We have no regrets with our decision to start a new life here and continue to love what we are doing. Our only hope is that you also see our dream and have a wonderful holiday.

Guestbook comments from the manager

Our trip to Grand Pailley Bas was the 3rd time we have stayed here and it will not be the last. What more would anyone require from a holiday, but fabulous views, great accommodation and very welcoming hosts. Nothing was to much trouble for mine hosts, they were excellent in their knowledge of the area ,local restaurants and the peacefulness of the evenings were all that we could have wished for. I would recommend this venue and this holiday to anyone who wants to relax and explore at their leisure. Well done to Ian and Fen, look forward to catching up soon - Craig W. Amble

A holiday in the south of France.

  • 5 of 5

We were looking forward to our holiday at Grand Pailley Bas and after a couple of days of travel, fell in love with the place as soon as we drove up the road. Fen and Ian were waiting to greet us and proved to be wonderful hosts. Most of the time you didn’t know they were there, unless it was to clean the pool or check that we were OK, or to offer suggestions of where to go.

The house was perfect for the six of us, Mum and Dad, two boys (3 and 5) and Nan and Grandad. Nice big bedrooms with French doors opening onto the decking which surrounds the front and side of the house. A big well equipped kitchen, complimented by an equally big BBQ outside. There is a lounge, but the weather was so nice we spent most of the time outside. And then there is the pool. We really could have done with another two weeks, by which time both of the boys would have been swimming without their armbands.

Around the property there were fields of sunflowers, corn and plums. The views were superb, Marian and Joanne saw a wild boar crossing the cornfield one morning, we saw deer in the distance a few times and for a few days we watch the farmer harvesting his plums. In the first week the moon was quite bright in the early night, but by week 2 it didn’t rise until after midnight, which meant I spend several evenings looking at the stars. With very little light in the area there were a lot of stars.

Some days we traveled around the area, many days we just stayed at the house. Whichever it was we had a wonderful time in a really nice home from home.

Many thanks Fen and Ian, Your home is lovely and we are very grateful that you allowed us to have it as our home for 2 weeks.

Happy holidays!

  • 5 of 5

As a family of 5, covering 3 generations, the superbly appointed accommodation was everything we hoped for and more.

With 3 spacious double / twin rooms on the ground floor with french windows opening onto a glorious rural outlook., there was no arguing over bedrooms! Two of the rooms shared a nearby large bathroom with over bath shower. Whilst the third enjoyed acces to an en-suite shower room.

The kitchen was large and equipped with all you would need for holiday catering and the lounge / dining room was comfortable with UK satellite TV allowing us to watch the Olympics.

Outside the covered seating area offers a choice of two dining tables, allowing best use in all weather conditions, while a third table is located in the large and securely fenced flat garden, ideal for young children.

The pool is over looked from the veranda but securely fenced and lit after dark, allowing the children to be safely supervised at all times. Access to the chest deep pool is via a short ladder and Fen and Ian equip guests with poolside loungers, sun parasol and inflatables for the pool.

Grand Pailley Bas is an isolated, rural property with good access to nearby towns and supermarkets (15min drive away). As keen cyclists, we enjoyed access to well surfaced, quiet French roads and a variety of way marked routes which helped to make the most of rides with and without the children.

During our stay, we particularly enjoyed the numerous local food markets and the Bastide towns as well as canoeing on the Dordogne.

Our hosts, Ian and Fen were warm and friendly and on hand to solve any problems whilst remaining inconspicuous throughout our stay, the perfect hosts.

In summary, a lovely property in a stunning rural location. Strongly recommended

Beautiful location with lots to do

  • 5 of 5

Situated in a beautiful area and the hosts are extremely welcoming and friendly. There's plenty to do, only short distances away and is suitable for all ages, including young children! If you wanted to have a lazy day, there is a fantastic pool just outside the gite where you can also sunbathe and enjoy watching and listening to the wildlife around. The fields around were filled with sunflowers when we visited. Nearby, there are also markets, water activities, walks, historic places and much more to do. Ian and Fen really looked after us while we were staying at Grand Pailley Bas. The gite was very clean, and had everything we needed. They also have 3 stunning dogs who are very friendly, but they do not use the area of the gite. I would definitely recommend to anyone looking to stay in the area.

A lovely, lazy relaxing holiday.

  • 5 of 5

A wonderful home with a great warm welcome from the hosts Fen and Ian. The house is cool even in very hot weather and well decorated. The beds were huge and very comfortable. There is UK Freesat and a DVD player. There are plenty of books, games and DVDS, plus internet access to keep in touch. The kitchen is equipped with everything you might need (from cold boxes, cool blocks, dishwasher tablets for the week to coffee pods for the Senseo coffee machine and all possible needed kitchen utensils). We appreciated the welcome pack including bread, butter, local jam, milk, 3 bottles of wine (red, white and sparkling!) and 2 boxes of biscuits! The owners are incredibly helpful!

The pool was cleaned daily. The view from the pool is a breath taking panorama of sunflowers and prune trees. We had the pleasure of watching the nesting swallows until the fledglings made their final flight from under the canopy.

We loved the region and probably only scratched the surface of things to do, mainly because we lazily spent a lot of time barbequing and sitting by the pool. However, there are plenty of vineyards for tasting, try canoeing along the Dordogne (best way to view the medieval fortified castles clinging to the banks). Definitely, spare an evening or two for the food night markets for relaxed outside dining and music. Our favourite was the Friday evening marked in Issigeac set in a medieval village square surrounded by narrow alleys formed by 14th and 15th century stone and wooden framed houses.

We would highly recommend Grand Pailley Bas. Thanks to Fen and Ian for a lovely, lazy relaxing holiday.

Fabulous gite in stunning location

  • 5 of 5

Grand Pailley Bas is a beautiful 3 bedroom gite set in the most stunning rural setting with panoramic views over the ever changing landscape. We visited in July when the sunflowers were just starting to bloom and turning the landscape a vibrant yellow. Grand Pailley Bas is suitable for a couple or family alike, with a spacious airy feel and the wonderful wrap around covered terrace over looking the pool area, for those wonderful relaxing alfresco evenings. Fen and Ian live very quietly on site, but are always at hand if any advice is needed regarding great places to visit in the area (of which there are many). The pool, terrace and garden was ours to enjoy privately and is the perfect place to unwind from the stresses of everyday life. Thank you Fen and Ian.

Lovely Summer Break

  • 5 of 5

Visited in Late August with my Partner. Lovely setting out in the French Countryside within easy reach (by car) of Bergerac Airport and Main Roads if you are driving. The Pool is available to use and has the benefit of wonderful views. In the area there are some lovely Market towns and I would definitely recommend making a visit to one of the many Night Markets!

Fen & Ian are both Lovely and couldn't have made us feel more welcome. .Will definitely be visiting again in the future!

From the Owner

“Lot-et-Garonne is perhaps the France that you always hoped existed but could never quite find - medieval villages and sunflower fields, quiet roads and small farms in gently rolling countryside. One of the 'best kept secrets' in France!” It is situated just south of the Dordogne and is part of the Aquitaine region of France. It’s quiet roads, and many historic Bastide towns make it a delight to visit. The area is famous not just for quality wines, but for the many plum orchards producing for the world renowned Pruneaux d’Agen. We spent 3 years researching the areas south of Limoges, The Pays de Lauzun, as the area is known, offered everything we had been searching for. Beautiful countryside, warm, friendly and welcoming people and a fantastic climate.

There are plenty of good restaurants in the area if cooking is not your thing and you wish to taste good quality French cuisine at reasonable prices. Ian and Fen can suggest venues at various price levels.

We are positioned nicely for the wine regions of Duras, Bergerac, Bordeaux, St Emilion, Monbazillac and Pecharment where you can organise your own wine tours and tastings along the way.

There is history in abundance with Sarlat (the 3rd most visited town in France) offering a walled medieval town steeped in beauty and brimming with street artists for your entertainment. The Dordogne River in that area offers an exquisite canoe trip where you can meander peacefully and at your own pace and marvel at chateaux almost around every bend. This is just a 2 hour drive.

Domme is another historic walled town not far from Sarlat and well worth a visit as are the caves at Lascaux with its famous prehistoric paintings and the stunning cliff top buildings at Rocamadour.

We can also offer you a photography course (one day or longer) at your leisure at extra cost, details of which can be found on our website www.photoworkshops.co.uk

Last but far from least, Bastille Day (14th July) is a huge celebration here in France with spectacular firework displays in most towns in the evening and street parties.

We will of course point you in the direction of our local Tourist Office when you arrive and will leave a folder of information in the Gite for you to peruse if you wish to research other things to do in the area.
