About the property

Cottage in Glaisdale, Nr. Whitby, North Yorkshire Moors, Yorkshire, England - Spectacular, Peaceful Location In A North Yorkshire Moors National Park Village

Mitre Cottage has just been awarded its 5 Stars by the Visit England Quality Tourism for Self Catering holiday home, something we are very proud of. A lot of hard work and passion has gone into making Mitre Cottage stand out from the rest of its local competitors.

Mitre Cottage been a feature of Glaisdale since the 19th century. It was formerly the barn attached to the Mitre Inn public house. A very tasteful, high specification conversion has resulted in this super home. We have combined antique and contemporary fixtures and fittings and the style of the cottage is quite unique. The cottage is spacious and spread out over two floors with a spectacular open plan ground floor. Lots of (double glazed!) windows produce a light and airy feel and we aim for a tasteful 'home from home' but with high end hotel comforts. Unusually for a central village location, we have allocated parking for two vehicles immediately outside the garden gate. Glaisdale is a super village situated in the heart of the North Yorkshire Moors National Park. It has a village shop, a butchers' shop (regionally famous for its local produce), a lovely village pub and a tennis court. It is a useful base for all sorts of holiday makers: walkers and cyclists combining fitness with breathtaking scenery; families looking for some peace and quiet combined with beach time in nearby Whitby; couples wanting some quiet time together in a beautiful location; friends wanting a house party to celebrate special times together. Glaisdale is one of a number of quite stunning North Yorkshire Moors National Park villages. It was built chiefly in the 19th century as an ironstone mining village. Today it is small, beautiful hillside village made up of many slate roofed and pan tiled cottages, wide verges and greens that cling to the hillside on the western side of the dale - just south of the River Esk. Glaisdale is also a very short drive from the historic fishing heritage seaside town of Whitby with all its many, many attractions. It is an equally short drive to the wider splendour of the North Yorkshire coast - including Robin Hood's Bay, Sandsend, Runswick Bay and Saltburn. With the wonderful, historic city of York also only an hour's drive away, Glaisdale is a fantastic location for a North Yorkshire holiday combining coast, country, culture and heritage.

Why Andrew Rooney chose Yorkshire Moors and Coast

We bought Mitre Cottage because we are a couple of old romantics! The area is truly stunning- one of England's best kept secrets. It combines coast, country and culture in hefty doses and never disappoints - whatever the weather and season. Glaisdale is that rare thing in 2014 England- a village with a real community at its heart. We came here in 2007 and have been made so very welcome.

What makes this cottage unique

We have taken the time to really plan for our guests. We have tried to think of everything and we think we have done so! We are terribly fussy guests ourselves and we have tried to apply our exacting standards to our cottage! Do please let us know if we have not!

one of the nicest cottages we've stayed in, really comfortable and the kitchen was beautiful and very well equipped. Very cosy base to return to after a day walking in the rain. Would recommend to anyone.

Gorgeous property.

  • 5 of 5

The cottage has everything you could possibly want in a holiday home or even in your own home, more crockery etc than you could ever use. The enormous TV was a great talking point, very comfortable furnishings and comfy beds. If there was one thing that I would have liked to have brought home it would have been the house itself.

We had a superb holiday catching up with family. The area is beautiful and a trip on the steam train from nearby Grosmont is an absolute must. The only negative thing I could say about Glaisdale is that the pub is a little further away from the village centre than we were expecting but if you don't mind the walk then it's not a problem. We will definitely be back. Many thanks to Andrew and Debbie who really know how to make a holiday home very memorable.

Car: necessary

Coast/Beach:

The wonderful North Yorkshire coast is minutes away by car.

Runswick Bay (north) and Whitby (south) can both be reached in 20 minutes by car. Robin Hood's Bay is approximately 30 minutes away by car.

The coast is simply beautiful. It is rugged, spectacular, and breathtaking at all times of year.

The nearest international airport is Newcastle International Aiport. This is 74 miles away - approximately 1 hour and 40 minutes drive.

Leeds-Bradford International Aiport is the second closest. This is 81 miles away - approximately 1 hour and 50 minutes drive.

Whilst Glaisdale does have both a bus and a train service, we do recommend that guests do have access to a car for maximum travel flexibility.
