Overview

About the property

Cottage Varaize, Nr. Saint Jean-D'Angely, Poitou-Charentes, France - Original 2 Bedroomed Cottage, Private Pool, Large Safe Garden, Wifi, Village Location

Olive Cottage is decorated in it's own individual 'chateau chic' style, albeit on a small scale, but with the family in mind.

Individual gite with a large, safe garden and overground pool for your sole use. The sunny living room has with French and UK free serve TV, DVD and videos. Free WIFI connection. The living room has double French windows at the back that lead to a large terrace. A large roll-out blind makes a perfect area to sit and relax, eat or have a drink - a great, secluded suntrap with view of the garden, pool and fields.

Off the living room is a separate fully equipped kitchen/diner - dishwasher, fridge freezer etc.

There is a double bedroom and bathroom downstairs - toilet, bath with shower.

A spiral staircase leads from the living room to the upstairs bedroom. The bed can be either a 180 cm double or 2 single beds. There is a further single fold-out bed if you need it and a second toilet and sink in the corner.

The wooden, overground pool (@ 8.5m x 4.5m) has it's own raised terrace with table and chairs. The garden is walled and gated and not overlooked. Off street parking. Well behaved pets allowed.

With it's Mediterranean alley of olive trees (hence the name), the back part of the garden overlooks the fields and lots of mature trees. There's plenty of safe space for playing games - we have an outdoor table tennis, whilst the adults relax with a chilled glass of local Pineau.

The house has heating for all year round rental.

The village is surrounded by vineyards and woodland. Situated at under 10 minutes drive from exit 34 of the A 10, the historic market town of St Jean d'Angely where you will find supermarkets, fresh produce markets, loads of restaurants, an indoor swimming pool complex, with saunas and gym. Other outside activities included the river Boutonne, where you can rent kayaks and pedalos, a large park with a playground, crazy golf, and restaurant. Enjoy nice walks along the river or go riding at one of the local horse riding centres. There are some interesting historic buildings at St Jean, including a museum and the never finished Royal Abbey. The town is also famous for it's motocross tracks, which hosts the World Championships every year.

The other Charentaise market towns of Matha and Aulnay are also only 10 mins drive away, both boast rich historic architecture, shops, restaurants, markets etc. The sandy beaches of the Atlantic coast are within an hours drive, the closest being Fouras at around 45minutes. A bit further up to the surf beaches of the cote Sauvage. The sandy beaches at Royan, St Georges de Didonne and Meschers are an hour's drive.

25 mins drive to Romanesque Saintes on the river Charente, great shops in the pedestrian centre, a new indoor/outdoor aquatic swimming centre, visit the amphitheatre or relax in a street side cafe. There is an 18 hole golf course.

Easy drive to the famous distilleries of Cognac, historic Rochefort.

Beautiful La Rochelle and the chic Ile de Re are just over an hour's drive, as is Ile de Oleron.

A bit further afield are Poitiers and Futuroscope, a futuristic adventure park, A day trip can be made to Puy de Fou with actors acting out scenes for history, including Roman gladiators, Vikings and Musketeers.

There is so much to do and see in this region for SW France, if you want to do anything except relax in the large garden and have a dip in the pool.

Lots of tourist information at the house, and a tourist office at the three local towns. Our agent, Shelley, will be happy to help you if you have any specific enquiries before you arrive or during your stay.

Friday changeover so make the most of cheaper off peak travel and less crowded roads during the summer by avoiding Saturday travelling.

About Shelley Smith

Hi, my name is Shelley and I look after the house for the owners. I have lived in the next village with my family since 2001, so have a good knowledge of the local area and am happy to answer any questions. I have a lot of experience in looking after gites, both of my own and other peoples. First rented in 2013 and I think we've hit the right note with this house.

Shelley Smith purchased this cottage in 2006

We bought this cottage because of its fantastic location close to many historic and beautiful towns. It is also within an hour's drive of the Atlantic coast with its many miles of secluded sandy beaches. The cottage itself is beautifully furnished with a large, safe (lockable gates) garden. all in all, a stay at Olive Cottage combines total relaxation with the opportunity to do many varied activities.

Unique period cottage. Lovely large garden, village location.

Bliss...

  • 5 of 5

Our second visit and just as lovely as we remembered it...A charming cottage opening onto a lavender lined decking area, with olive trees and a private pool-absolutely idyllic...Step inside the cottage and be won over by whitewashed walls, free standing one off pieces of furniture, efficient wi-fi, an abundance of books/DVDs,equipment galore-all put together to create a light, airy escape from it all-that is totally relaxing and tranquil...The nearby town of St.Jean d'Angely has a variety of restaurants and bars plus there is lots to explore nearby...Shelley could not be more helpful and we can not be happier to be at this stunning place again...We can not recommend this period property with modern twists highly enough...

Olive cottage

  • 2 of 5

It is a delightful cottage with a lovely garden. However we did feel it was rather too shabby chic. Our main problems were firstly ,arrival on a Friday was very inconvenient as it meant we had to find somewhere for one night before travelling on. Secondly was the payments for towels and bedding ,which most people include . It was very second rate. We were given bright purple pillow cases which did not match the rest of the bedding and the towels were very thin. This definitely was not value for money. Lastly the oven and trays were very dirty and not fit to use. My husband spent a long time just cleaning one tray so that it was fit to use. These issues did rather spoil the holiday but on the whole we did enjoy our our stay. I'm sorry but I would not recommend it to others.

Owner's Response: Yes, as this guest states, 'It (Olive Cottage) is a delightful cottage with a lovely garden.' - 'On the whole we did enjoy our stay' We have many returning guests - the guests before these have already booked 3 weeks in 2016 - and glowing reviews. To answer the other points raised - Olive Cottage has a Friday start date (in season) which is clearly marked on the advert, so guests are not obliged to book the house if this is inconvient for them. Many guests find this a plus as less busy roads and cheaper ferry crossings. We, like many other gites, charge for linen. The pillowcases were brand new and plain dark purple, but I'm sorry if pillowcases that didn't match the bed linen spoiled your holiday. I have never had any complaints regarding the towels before. Apologise if the oven tray wasn't cleaned to your standards. It would have been better if you'd have bought these issues to light during your stay so I could have sorted them out for you. As I said to yourselves and to all guests on arrival, I am always available if there are any problems. Thanks, Shelley

Great holiday in Varaize

  • 5 of 5

We had a lovely two weeks at the cottage - we particularly enjoyed the garden as the weather was excellent most days. The cottage had everything we needed for a relaxing holiday. Our girls particularly enjoyed the pool and table tennis.
