Cottage in Scarborough, Yorkshire, England - Great Location, Just 5 Minutes From South Bay In One Direction And The Castle In The Other.

Bank Cottage is at the end of a terrace of Victorian cottages, up a short flight of steps from the footpath. From the front of the house you can look out over the harbour to Filey Brigg and Flanborough Head. It has gas central heating. On the ground floor, the cottage has a small lounge(snug) with sea views, dining room which will seat up to 6 people, a small kitchen with dishwasher, washing machine and microwave and a cloakroom. Up a flight of (quite steep stairs, common in these sorts of cottages) you will find a double bedroom with sea views and a large single or small twin bedroom and bathroom with walk in shower and bath. Up a further flight of quite steep stairs you will find another double bedroom which with effect from March 2018 will have an en suite bathroom. There is also a second lounge/ TV room with panoramic sea views. The property has a small fenced off yard and a shared terrace runs in front of the house where you can sit and admire the views. Whilst recently renovated, the owners have retained the character of the original cottage. Parking is on the street using the permits provided. This is a great location for exploring Scarborough, the rest of the coastline and the North Yorkshire Moors. There is always lots to see and do in Scarborough including great festivals which are often held slightly out of season. We donate 5% of our annual net rental to Scarborough lifeboat fund raising.

We are a family of four, one grown up daughter and a teenage son. My sister moved to Scarborough Old Town some years ago and we all fell in love with it during our visits here.

Why Dilys Wynn chose Scarborough

Having fallen in love with Scarbrough, we decided that this is where we would move to, once our final youngster had flown the nest. When we saw this cottage we took the plunge and bought it.

So before we move up and when we are not using it ourselves we let it to guests.

What makes this cottage unique

We love the fabulous views, the ability to simply park the car and walk everywhere. There is always something going on, even out of season. We always visit the theatre, enjoy live music and often eat out very inexpensively.

Notes on accommodation: Gas, electricity and wifi included. Parking is on the street with parking permits for up to two cars provided free of charge. We think the quite steep stairs inside the cottage and the unguarded nature of the shared terrace in front of the house, makes this cottage unsuitable for toddlers. I am very sorry but we cannot accept pets. Outside: There is a south facing, shared terrace which runs in front of the house with a bench in front of the window, from where you can relax and take in the views. However, this is unfenced. There is an enclosed yard at the back. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Bedlinen is included but please bring your own towels. The property is cleaned and bed linen changed on changeover day between bookings. Extra linen is left should you wish to change yourselves during multi-week stays. Other: On the second floor is another louunge with seating for 5. It has books, games and another TV/DVD. An ideal place to just relax in the evening.

Comfortable, well-thought out cottage in great location

My friend and I had a great stay at this cottage. The layout with the two lounges - one on the ground floor, one at the top - is fabulous as it gives you lots of space to spread out. It is extremely well equipped, I really can't think of anything we missed - or that Dilys had not thought of! All the appliance worked as they should; efficient heating for the cooler hours of the day. And a really good location, with no road but just a footpath in front, so very quiet and private. We had a couple of nice sunny days when we took advantage of the outside area for an aperitive. The views are great, the furnishings tasteful, communication with the owner easy and pleasant, check-in with the key safe convenient - so a clear recommendation all round!

Car: not necessary


2 minutes from the harbour and South Bay. 10 minutes from North Bay. 15 minutes in the car to Cayton Bay and Filey. 30/40 minutes by car to Robin Hoods bay and Whitby.

40 minutes on the train to York - an hour by car.


Scarborough railway station is 10 minutes by taxi.


The South Bay (donkeys and all) is 2 minutes walk and the North Bay, 15 minutes walk the other way. The castle is 10 minutes and the town centre is 5 minutes walk. The North Yorkshire Moors, Robins Hood Bay and Whitby are about half an hour by car or you can get the bus (great fun). Cayton Bay and Filey beaches are less than 15 minutes by car. York is 40 minutes on the train or an hour in the car. Visit Castle Howard or go on the steam train from Pickering, both about half an hour away.

Further Details:

It is a short walk into town where you can find a selection of shops including a very good M&S Food Hall. The Market Hall hasa really good deli stall and there are a number of shops in the town and large supermarkets if you want to go by car. There is a small corner shop in Princess Square which stocks the basics. In the evening enjoy a range of resturants, the wonderful Stephen Joseph Theatre, live music venues or just walk along the front. For children (and adults) it is a short hop on the open top bus to North Bay where you can walk to the Sea Life Centre or enjoy Peaseholm Park. Or learn to surf! The Rotunda is worth a visit as is the Museam and Art Gallery. Further afield by bus or car lies Whitby and other lovely North Yorkshire towns and villages plus great walks. We have put lots of information in a file in the cottage about the things we like to do which we hope you find useful.
