Converted barn in extensive gardens with private pool, patio and rural views.

Overview

Property

Updated: 25-Nov-2016
Converted Barn in Ambeyrac, near Figeac - Surrounded by spectacular scenery In the beautiful valley of the Lot river.

In this delightful rural area the gîte provides the perfect place to relax and get away from it all, or to enjoy the great outdoors - it's a mountain biker's paradise, the number of footpaths and hiking trails is extraordinary and the beautiful Lot and Célé rivers are great for kayaking. The stone cottage stands in the grounds of an imposing traditional French country house and has access to nearly 2 acres of gardens, surrounded by trees. The terrace provides a peaceful setting for dining, overlooking the pool and the river valley, with a covered BBQ area nearby. There is also a second secluded patio area on the site of the traditional bread oven, the remains of which can still be seen. The 40 square metre pool has lovely views of the garden and surrounding area.

The ground floor is open-plan with high ceilings and lots of light and there is a second comfortable sitting area on the mezzanine floor for watching TV and listening to music. All bedrooms have been newly decorated. Two are on the ground floor and two upstairs; all the beds have comfortable mattresses with Egyptian cotton linen and towels. There is a bathroom on each floor as well as an additional toilet. The kitchen is fully equipped, and freshly grown vegetables from the garden are available at the kitchen door according to season.

Alternatively, the owner is a qualified chef and would be delighted to cater for your group while you relax by the pool. Menus vary according to what's in season at the market and what's ripe and ready to eat from the vegetable garden. All diets are catered for, and vegetarian catering is Marion's speciality. Treat yourselves to a gourmet dinner on the terrace, served with local organic wines. Just let Marion know - 24 hours notice is required.

There are also many great restaurants within a short drive. Do ask us for recommendations.

About the Owner

Marion is half French. Martin is full English.

We both love life & food and we think we've found a beautiful place to share these things with you.

Marion is a professional chef who blames her French grandmother for her obsession with food and her compulsion to feed people (her friends don't complain!) She's a fish-eating veggie who loves continually developing her repertoire and has a passion for baking bread.

Martin is a 10 times marathon runner and a keen cyclist. He loves trees and birds and wants to change the world, but has developed a convincing cover as an IT professional. Marion cooks. Martin doesn't, but he can suggest spectacular hiking trails, bike rides or runs.

Guestbook comments from the owner

My friends and I were looking for a place to enjoy the French sunshine either side of a wedding in the area and Marion's converted barn was just perfect!

The house itself has all the amenities you could hope for. There are two larger bedrooms and two petite - but with a view like that, you definitely want to be getting up and out in the morning! The kitchen is well equipped and we were easily able to cook and prepare big meals for 6 of us. There's a coal BBQ outside if you fancy getting things on the grill.

The pool area overlooks Marion's incredible grounds which are impeccably well tended to, with bumblebees and butterflies flocking to the lavender bushes. As someone who always gets bitten, I was very happy to find that there were very few mosquitos around the pool area (though the same can't be said of the garden though it's my own fault for deciding to do a work out in the grass!!). Mosquito bites can ruin a holiday for me so this was a huge plus.

The area is rural, but there are enough houses in Ambeyrac to make you feel like you're not the in middle of nowhere. Having said this, I would recommend a car even if you intend to sit by the pool all week as the nearest decent sized supermarket is about 15 minutes drive in Villeneuve which is a very pretty medieval town. Villefranche-de-Rouergue has two big hyper markets and is about 30 minutes away.

Lastly, how could I not leave a review without mentioning Marion's INCREDIBLE cooking?! Marion, who is a qualified chef, offers a four course meal with wine for around 30 euros and it was the perfect ending to our holiday. All the food was either fresh from the garden or locally sourced and it was the best food we had all week. It still makes me upset that we couldn't finish it all!!

Overall, I couldn't recommend this place enough. It's the perfect place if you're looking to wind down, switch off and relax. Though that does remind me, the WiFi is really good so if you do need to connect to the outside world, you won't have an issue there either!!

Thank you Marion - we hope to visit you again!!

Wonderful Property for two family break

  • 5 of 5

Our group was made up of two couples with four children, aged 4-9. We had a delightful time at Mon Plaisir. We all made daily use of the wonderful pool and decking area and the cricketers in our group established a wicket by the swings that made good use of the huge garden. We had all but one of our evening meals outside at the barn and were able to self cater without any trouble - albeit perhaps we brought a bit too much food at once as the kitchen storage is not vast. We dont usually seek / need wifi and a TV on holiday but this one had both and that turned out great to keep up with the Olympics (albeit the French coverage was as partisan as you might expect).

What we did not know until we arrived was that Marion can cook for you and the adults had a delightful meal local and homegrown produce without the hassle of driving and child minding. We often spend too much money eating out and this meal was very good quality and excellent value.

The location is very quiet but you can get to where you need to in the car without problems. the village has a basic shop within walking distance and the local roads are suitable for cycling. Its only about three miles on the bikes to a good swimming spot on the river Lot and that made a great little trip with young ones in 35 degree heat!

The market at Villefranche-de-Rouergue is well worth a trip on a Thursday and there is good kayaking on the Célé at Marcilhac-sur-Célé.

Would certainly return and recommend.

Great location, well equipped, plenty of space

  • 5 of 5

We had a great time here. Marion, the owner, is friendly and helpful without being intrusive. Nice conversion with spacious living areas, huge garden, good views across the valley, good sized pool. Well-equipped with a big HD TV and good Internet connection. Ambeyrac is well situated close to the Lot. It's a great area for walking, cycling, trail running and nature (there's a woodpecker in the trees, and we saw a red squirrel and lizards in the garden). We particularly like the weekly market in Villefranche-de-Rouergue. Definitely recommended and we'll be coming here again.

Notes:

  • Outside: The extensive garden is surrounded by trees, and provides both shady and sunny spots to relax in. For outside dining, the terrace has a wooden dining table, chairs and a parasol, with a lovely view of the garden and pool. An additional feature is the small private patio area which we recently converted from the site of the traditional bread oven in a secluded spot behind the gite. There are plenty of sun-loungers around the 10m x 4m pool which is set in wooden decking and looks out to the nearby hills. Children (and adults!) will enjoy the traditional wooden swings and climbing frame set in a corner of the garden as well as the full-size table tennis table and the set of traditional French boules. Utility Room: Washing machine and drying rack available in the utility room next door to the gîte. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Towels and bedlinen is included. Sheets are changed weekly.
