Detached Tower House. Alum Bay, Overlooks The Needles, with free Pitch and Putt

Overview

Property

Updated: 25-Jul-2016
Cottage at Alum Bay, Sea views and golf, 5 mins down the chine to cove, with Golf

The Old Tower House is a unique detached cottage built back in 1868 with views from the settee all the way to Tennyson monument whilst overlooking the sea and The Needles from the garden and a few bedrooms too. Located in the perfect spot tucked above the cliffs of the famous coloured sands of Alum Bay. It suits families and couples seeking a private tranquil holiday retreat. As many walkers would tell you most of the finest views of the Island, beaches, sea and mainland are from the coastal paths that west wight offers and we are located on their doorstep! We even boast a gate leaving it a 5mins walk to the purple clad Headon Warren, one of the top 10 secret places and top to picnic on the Island. Built of stone with ornate roof tiles and charm throughout its taking a step back in time yet with all the luxury of modern living, quality and some antique furnishing, underfloor heating (mainly) and combi boiler, so no lack of hot water! With 4 bedrooms (1 single downstairs), lounge and a brilliantly equipped kitchen, 2 bathrooms (1 main en-suite, 1 downstairs) garden furnishings and much more. Then there's free unlimited pitch and putt golf in adjacent grounds. Complimentary cream tea during your stay. If there’s anything else you need the owner will do their best to assist on site.

About the Owner

I returned home to the Island in 2012 and have a wealth of knowledge of the island as a local as well as returning repeatedly each year as a tourist! I will happily advise you on walks, meals out, where to go. I will try and assist where I can to ensure you have a memorable stay..whilst giving you all the privacy you'd expect too. Being a regular returning to play pitch and putt, its rather nice owning it now ! Its as fun or as serious as you make it...even I loose balls....you don't need to count the scores!!! I am quite creative, arts and music a big part of my life and living here provides a constant source of inspiration.

Fabulous location and stunning house

  • 5 of 5

Just staying here now and being owners first season have added a review whilst here, its absolutely fabulous, beautiful garden overlooking needles and very peaceful , we are sitting here in sun all day with lovely sunsets just over the hill on a 40 min walk to the another beach and great local seafront pub. the alum bay beach is only 5 mins and no roads to cross just a gentle stroll down the chine and woods full of daffs and bluebells. Owner is on site and has given us great island info as well as a lovely cream tea and we are making most of playing on site pitch and putt course here too. very well equipped cottage and very pretty, first time it was a waste of time adding tea towels and my own pillow when i packed, its all here and clean and well presented accommodation, already reserved for next year, a great find !!!

Location

From the Owner

Its a beautiful spot here, with free on site pitch and putt and an apartment also available for the grandparents or friends to stay too - The Old Hayloft (E8578). This forms best part of Headon Hall estate boasting the most iconic views available of The Needles and across the country side to Freshwater Downs, whilst nested under the purple clad Headon Warren. Its a reclusive, relaxing, simply beautiful location and the walks arguable the most stunning of the island right on the doorstep.

Activity and Interests

Nearest Barpub : at 1 Miles Nearest Ferry : Yarmouth - Wightlink ferries at 4 Miles Nearest Restaurant : at 1 Miles Nearest Beach : Alum Bay at 1 Miles Car: recommended

Special interest holidays:

We can provide all art materials if you would like to try drawing, painting or sculpting whilst on your stay. Golf tuition can also be arranged, on site.

Coast/Beach:

The famous coloured cliffs of Alum Bay, with pebbled beach is under 10 minutes walk to the beach. There is a boat trip (seasonal) out to the Rocky crops called The Needles. The pebble beaches of Totland are only a 5 minutes drive or 25 minute walk over the Warren, from our gate. The sandy beach of Colwell Bay is a 10 minute drive as is the stunning sandy beach and beautiful waves of Compton Bay. Fossil hunting is good there and surfing and wind surfers common too. Walks from the doorstep off road.

Travel:

Only 10 minutes from the Lymington Ferry terminal. Approx 30 minutes to Cowes or 40 mins with traffic to Fishbourne ferry. A bus stop is 5 minutes walk away and goes via Yarmouth ferry to Newport where other buses connect to all boat access to the Island. The House is tucked off a private road off the Alum Bay Road, just beyond Freshwater / Totland.

Distances:

The House is only about 5 mins drive to Totland /Freshwater offering an abundance of character pubs, restaurants, small supermarkets, local produce, bakers and butchers and array of small shops. Art gallery, photo shops, gift shops, florists. Yarmouth offers similar and is only 10 minutes away. Newport with it's larger array of clothes shops and the routine shops like Marks is 25/ 30 minute drive. There is also a cinema complex.

Further Details:

Tourist Attractions : Our most Local attraction is 5 minutes walk, The Needles Pleasure Park with its chairlift down to the Beach. Calbourne Water Mill is about a 15 minute drive, passing Chessell Pottery. There are also fishing trips and other interesting boat trips available in Yarmouth. Many tourist attractions are all within 40 minutes via coastal drive. Lovely Walks: No Car! From The house it is possible to walk one side of the Island over The Downs, above The Needles, to Freshwater via Tennyson monument. Or the other side of our coast, over the purple clad heather warren to Totland Bay. You can even venture all the way to Yarmouth if you like a longer few hours leisurely walk. The views are stunning on this long walk and I'd say the best to be had on the Island ?! You can always choose to catch the bus back from these walks, after a lovely meal in a local restaurant or pub !

Notes:

  • Notes on accommodation: The cottage is unique with stunning views from the the settee and built of stone offering character and quality accommodation with a home from home feel and all you need to bring is clothes and yourselves. I live on site to assist. You won't find flat pillows, a damp cold house or lack of hot water, crockery, utensils or a good frying pan or baking tray here Outside: The garden leads up to the further grounds and onto the pitch and putt course (main seasonal opening 11-5) which you may use for free for your stay. There are wild flowers, many bulbs, shrub and wildlife. Rare birds are common, with daily visits from pheasants, foxes, certain times badgers and always a rabbit around... Music room. This room is only available to musicians who require a grand piano for their stay and is at extra cost. Tower room. sorry this room is not accessible.
