Cottages in Solva, Pembrokeshire, Wales - Excellent Accommodation As Well As Underfloor Heating And A Double Entry Wood Burning Stove

BOATHOUSE COTTAGE is located in the picturesque village of Solva, with its unspoilt harbour and small accessible beach, just a ten minute walk from the cottage. Solva is found along the North Pembrokeshire coastline, between the cathedral city of St Davids and the rolling waves of Newgale beach. The village, built upon a tidal estuary, has a range of pubs and cafes serving good food, art galleries, as well as a pottery, a general store, and a post office. Solva is flanked by the stunning scenery and wildlife of the Pembrokeshire coastal path which is perfect for families to explore come rain or shine.

These two four-bedroom Pembrokeshire style cottages (PANTEG FARMHOUSE COTTAGE is next door cottage ID 6014967) have been developed on the site of the original Panteg farmhouse incorporating existing buildings and recycling old stone. They have been built with close consideration to the principles of sustainable homes and include solar panels, heat source pumps, underfloor heating, and double entry wood burning stoves. Furnished with oak floors and stair cases and using a mix of antique furniture and contemporary pieces, the cottages have been finished to a high specification as well as having their individual character.

The decor is enhanced by local, original art work: soft furnishings by Seaforth Designs, fabrics by Vanessa Arbuthnott who credits her seaside designs from ‘many happy hours combing the beaches of Pembrokeshire and throws and rugs from Melintregwynt and Solva Wollen Mill.

The properties have outside bike/surfboard stores and good parking arrangements. On the spacious ground floor, there is a contemporary, stylish kitchen and dining area with a pine dresser and a farmhouse table that seats eight comfortably. The kitchen, with granite worktops, is fitted with an electric eye-level double oven, halogen hob, microwave, dishwasher, larder style fridge-freezer and wine cooler. From the kitchen is a slate floor utility room with washing machine, dryer and access to a wet room with shower and toilet.

The lounge area has comfortable sofas and arms chairs and a flat screen TV/DVD player. There is also a music system which plays CDs, iPhone 5s and radio; the internal speakers allow for music in the lounge and/or kitchen area. Guests are welcome to borrow books and films from the well stocked shelves. There is a central double entry wood burning stove that, along with the underfloor heating, heats the lounge and the sun room.

The sun room has a table with eight chairs as an alternative for dining and provides access via the bi-folding doors to a paved and lawn area with garden furniture. The ground floor has a spaciously light feel, with areas for mealtimes, entertaining, watching TV, quiet reading or board games.

Bedrooms: Bedroom 1: King-size, bedside cabinets, chest of draws and wardrobe. En-suite shower room.

Bedroom 2: Double bed, bedside cabinets, chest of draws and en-suite shower room.

Bedroom 3: Twin beds, bedside cabinets and chest of draws.

Bedroom 4: Single bed, bedside cabinet and chest of draws.

Bathrooms: Upstairs: Toilet, wash basin, bath with shower facility.

Downstairs: Wet room, toilet, wash basin and shower.

What a fabulous holiday home . We absolutely loved Boathouse Cottage and it definitely has the ‘wow’ factor. From the impressive layout to excellent facilities provided, to the welcoming cakes and crab bucket- all lovely touches and made us feel very welcome. I thank you for the line and bucket we caught crabs and had crab races.

August 2015

Wow!!! The moment we opened the door we anted to explore further. Everything – furnishing, décor, welcome touches to the highest standard. A place I could easily live, ideas I will be taking home. Millie very impressed with the en-suite, bag unpacked before anyone else could state their claim!! The children’s bookcase, games, small chair, a true family welcome. A kitchen packed with everything you could wish for. This is all before we step outside to use the decking, see the amazing views and use also the garden area for a barbecue. This is before we step outside to discover pretty Solva and its surrounding area. Who would need to go too far for too long. Many thanks.

August 2015

Fabulous cottage- every thing we had hoped for and a whole lot more. So many lovely touches and luckily the weather was mixed which meant we had more time in the cottage. We loved the view from the deck and watching the Jackclaws flying home to roost at sunset. Fabulous walks, beaches and pubs nearby – thank you!

July 2015

Wonderful house to stay for a week. We’ve really enjoyed our stay. We would recommend going:

1. The bay in Solva – go to lower Solva and the lime kilns and walk up the hill. You’ll see a pebbly beach.

2. Horse riding at Nolton Stables. Riding on the beach is a really good experience even for people who have never ridden before.

3. Coastering – we would recommend the company TYF in St Davids (next to Barclays bank). Sam Nun the instructor was very patient and kind and good at pushing you off the cliffs.

4. Having fun body boarding at Newgale beach- thank you Frazer and Dolores

(Alice 8 years old)

PS Kayo and got 2 badges for diving and swimming 5 metres

July 2015

What a fantastic place! We have had a fantastic time. The Boathouse is an amazing place. The kitchen is as good as being at home. Loved he ornaments and art work. The welcome pack was great. And we enjoyed the sun deck! Only one rainy day! What a fab week! It was my first visit to Pembrokeshire and will certainly not be my last- if I have the chance I would love to return to Boathouse Cottage. I cannot imagine a more perfect base for a holiday in delightful Wales

June 2015

Such a gorgeous house with every comfort provided – even a hamper of goodies. We have enjoyed a lovely week’s holiday in beautiful weather with plenty of walking followed by lazy evenings in the deck. Surely it never rains in West Wales? Thank you

May – June 2015

Thank you Dolores and Frazer this house is short of nothing. The welcome hamper was very thoughtful and much enjoyed. We hope to return sometime as the house is extremely comfortable and Solva forms a perfect base for seeing Pembrokeshire. I can recommend Skomer, New Haven (the Swann), North Haven (park up and watch the waves), St Brides beach (nr Marloes), Porthgain, Strumble Head (for the clouds) and Porthmelgan (walk from Whitesands) all places are dog friendly except Skomer.

We had such an enjoyable and relaxing stay in Solva. The house is such a pleasure to stay in. I love all the colours and all the ‘boaty’-themed touches and it is very evident that the house has built and furnishes to a very high standard. We love cooking and it was also a pleasure to use all your beautiful utensils- nicer than at home! We also loved the ‘welcome hamper’ and toiletries – a lovely touch.

About Dolores Davey

The Nicol family have had a property in Solva for over four decades and four generations have enjoyed the delights of this wonderful area. We have spent thousands of hours enjoying this beautiful place with our children, grandchildren, family and friends. Major events and rites of passage have been celebrated here from academic achievements, GCSEs, A levels and Degree successes to engagements, weddings and ‘significant’ birthdays.

Then there are just the every day events, a seaside picnic, and a walk along the coastal path or just sitting at the Quay reading a book. What make these ordinary things special is the extraordinary and beautiful surroundings.

Why Dolores Davey chose Solva

The whole of Pembrokeshire is an area of outstanding beauty and Solva is the most picturesque harbour in the county. There is so much to do for all ages and all year around. Whether it is beach activities, surfing and sailing or the beautiful walks and bird life of the coastal path there are plenty of outdoor activities. For those who like a more relaxing time there are art galleries, potteries and craft events galore to visit. But the beauty of this part of Pembrokeshire is it never feels over crowded or commercialised. Just perfect!

What makes this cottage unique

Our cottages have been developed and furnished to the highest standard of comfort and luxury. The sun rooms and outside space ensure that the cottages are light and airy in the summer and the under floor heating, wood burning stoves, make them cosy and inviting in the winter. We know that leisure time is precious and we want to ensure you have accommodation and facilities that contribute to a truly relaxing and memorable holiday

You will find our approach friendly and welcoming starting with a home-made cake in the tin and a bottle of Prosecco in the drinks cooler. Cheers!

Notes on accommodation: Well behaved dogs are welcome but we request they stay downstairs and keep off the furniture. Outside: The properties are accessed along a pedestrian right of way and as such only those cars accessing the cottages use the lane. The lane, however is occasionally used by walkers or local residents making their way from Upper to Lower Solva. As the cottages are situated down the lane they area is very quiet and tranquil but the village and its amenities are all within walking distance. Both properties have gardens, patio areas, garden furniture, barbecue areas and a raised decked area with stunning views (accessed via steps) with table and chairs for dining.

Fantastic property with everything you could want and need for a stay.

  • 5 of 5

The property is beautifully decorated and spotlessly clean. The owners made it extra special with a few extra small touches. There were spring flowers put in every room, a small range of toiletries in each bedroom and a lovely hamper with eggs, cake, tea, coffee, jams and chutney. They left milk in the fridge and a bottle of prosseco. There was also a basket in the utility room with a lovely note saying there were extra towels and to help ourselves if we needed to. Logs and kindling were left to start us off - gorgeous log burner which really set the room off. We mostly choose to stay in self catering accomadation and this is one the best we have stayed in. Books, tv, music system, everything you could need. A lovely kitchen really well equipped with plenty of crockery and cutlery. A beautiful area to stay in, with some fantastic walks and then to come back after a day out to the cottage was so lovely and relaxing.

Special interest holidays:

The Pembrokeshire Coastal Path and the Islands of Skomer, with the opportunity to see puffins and Ramsey Island host to one of the largest breeding colonies of Atlantic grey seals in the British Isles, not to mention the likelihood of seeing porpoises attracts visitors from all over the world.

There are opportunities to learn and take part in an array of water-based activities including sailing, surfing, kayaking and coastering. There are many opportunities for riding and trekking including beach riding.

In addition the land, seascape and light of Pembrokeshire attracts many artists.

Within five minutes walk of Boathouse Cottage is Solva beach. At low tide it is a lovely walk which allows you to look back at Upper Solva with the Pembrokeshire coastal path at either side. At high tide it is a picturesque harbour with bobbing boats, kayaking and children crabbing. During the summer months Solva Quay is the setting for a variety of both children and adult regattas, with local and visitors encouraged to participate.

Haverfordwest, approximately 11 miles from Solva is the nearest train and bus station. It is possible to make a connection from here all over the UK.

Fishguard is the nearest Port, with ferries to and from Ireland and is 14 miles from Solva.

Cardiff is the nearest Airport - 111 miles from Solva, although there is a small airfield at Haverfordwest, but this services private flights only.

There are opportunities for surfing, kite surfing, kayaking and paddle boarding at both Newgale and Whitesands Beaches just four to five miles from Solva Cottage. Both beaches have surf schools, equipment for hire and cafes. It is not always necessary to take the car and in the summer months there is a comprehensive network of buses around St Davids peninsular. For example, the Puffin Shuttle and the Celtic Coaster are on the route to some of the most fantastic blue flag beaches.

Further Details:

Solva has all of the immediate amenities in terms of a well-stocked food store and post office, cafés and pubs. But in St Davids- three miles from Solva- you will find a range of shops and services including banks, a large supermarket, hardware store, butchers, delicatessen and numerous cafés. In addition the visitor information centre -Oriel y Parc. This is run by the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park. Here you will find out what there is to see and what is going on. As well as the cafe, there is also a National Museum of Wales art gallery. The artist and painter Graham Sutherland had his roots here and there are frequent and changing exhibitions.

No trip to St Davids - the smallest city in Britain-would be complete without a visit to the St Davids Cathedral and the Bishops Palace.

St Davids Cathedral is one of the jewels in Pembrokeshire’s crown, attracting hundreds of thousands of people every year. The site is of obvious interest to Christian pilgrims but is also popular with other sightseers including photographers and walkers visiting the breathtaking St Davids peninsula.

Together with the neighbouring Bishop’s Palace, the Cathedral is a must-see for anyone visiting the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park.

The location of St Davids Cathedral, nestling almost hidden in a grassy hollow beneath the tiny city, adds to the very special atmosphere that most visitors feel when they come here.
