About Alec Welham

We moved to Long Marston in late spring 2014 to pursue a self-sufficient lifestyle in the country. As avid gardeners we grow as much fruit and veg' as we can fit on the land. We have won many awards for our vegetables including the National Vegetable Society Championships at Harrogate in September 2015 and 2016.

We also have hand- reared ducks, chickens and turkeys in our garden.

Why Alec Welham chose North Yorkshire

The Cottage is set in beautiful rural surroundings in the heart of North Yorkshire just 6 miles from the City of York.

Built on the historic site of the Battle of Marston Moor with rolling countryside in every direction.

The main cottage originally dates back to 1644 and maintains the original charm of this period. Although the self-contained apartment was built as part of an extension centuries later, its features sympathetically reflect the style of the house.

What makes this apartment unique

The property is ideally situated in the small village of Long Marston, 5 miles from the A1 M and the historic market town of Wetherby.

York is accessible within a 15 minute drive, or a 20 minute bus journey will take you to York train station and the City Centre.

Harrogate is just a 25 minute car journey, famous for its Victoria architecture, Roman baths, and Betty’s Tea Rooms.

Knaresborough is also just a 15 minute car journey to explore the Castle, Mother Shiptons cave, or take a row boat along the river.

Comfortsble, cozy and convenient

  • 5 of 5

The listing is an accurate description of the property but what it doesn't convey is the peace you experience while staying there. The views from all windows are captivating. The apartment is well appointed with all conveniences you need (particularly that power shower, Alec, it was grand :-) Our hosts were very attentive to any thing we required. They have a great garden which they were preparing for a show - lovely. The location is perfect for visitIng York and other places of interest in the area. After a busy day of sightseeing it was so nice to return to calm and quiet. I would recommend it to a friend or relative. My husband and I would definitely return.

nice location but needs some attention

  • 3 of 5

Nice enough flat in a bucolic spot, close to York. But there were issues with the plumbing and some other minor maintenance items needed attention. (Kettle didn't work, light bulbs out, etc.) We emailed the owners about these concerns before writing this review, but received no response.

Nice apartment and within easy reach of Wetherby and York

  • 4 of 5

Enjoyed a 3 day break at this apartment flat.Everything you need for a self contained holiday. Suit a couple rather than a family.Rural outlook over the site of the battle of Marston Moor, where Cromwell's troops defeated the Royalists in the English Civil War.

Took a short trip to York using nearby Park and Ride, and spent an afternoon at Wetherby races which are about 4 miles from the property. Long Marston village where the cottage is situated was not particularly endowed with places to eat.The local pub The Sun Inn did not serve food in the evening when we called in. Although they were helpful in recommending other establishments in adjoining villages which were a short trip away.Went to Spotted Ox in Tolkwith which had a reasonable menu.

Overall, our stay was pretty pleasant and would return to the same apartment if visiting the area again.

A great, comfortable little cottage within easy reach of York

  • 5 of 5

This is delightful little cottage with beautiful views over Long Marston and The Moors in the distance. Christine and Alec were very welcoming upon arrival and informed us of the historic battle of Long Marston (something we were unaware of). York was an easy drive away plus plenty of Park and Ride sites. The cottage itself was very comfortable and cosy and peaceful during the night. We also had a lovely supply of eggs from Alec and Christine's hens for which we are very grateful. Would highly recommend staying here.

Owner's Response: Sharing what we love and all the area has to offer locally is always very satisfying.... Trips into the beautiful North Yorkshire Countryside, visits to the many Historic Houses and Castles not to mention the non stop exciting and ever - changing itinerary that the historic City of York has to offer.

Beautiful hide away.

  • 5 of 5

Charming cottage and wonderful owners. The cottage was beautifully clean and the eggs, milk and tea and coffee were greatfully received. The view from the living room is second to none. Lovely box of leaflets and folder of things to do. Hopefully it's not long til we return. Thanks for a lovely birthday weekend.
