About Alec Welham

We moved to Long Marston in late spring 2014 to pursue a self-sufficient lifestyle in the country. As avid gardeners we grow as much fruit and veg' as we can fit on the land. We have won many awards for our vegetables including the National Vegetable Society Championships at Harrogate in September 2015 and 2016.

We also have hand- reared ducks, chickens and turkeys in our garden.

Alec Welham purchased this apartment in 2014

Why Alec Welham chose North Yorkshire

The Cottage is set in beautiful rural surroundings in the heart of North Yorkshire just 6 miles from the City of York.

Built on the historic site of the Battle of Marston Moor with rolling countryside in every direction.

The main cottage originally dates back to 1644 and maintains the original charm of this period. Although the self-contained apartment was built as part of an extension centuries later, its features sympathetically reflect the style of the house.

What makes this apartment unique

The property is ideally situated in the small village of Long Marston, 5 miles from the A1 M and the historic market town of Wetherby.

York is accessible within a 15 minute drive, or a 20 minute bus journey will take you to York train station and the City Centre.

Harrogate is just a 25 minute car journey, famous for its Victoria architecture, Roman baths, and Betty’s Tea Rooms.

Knaresborough is also just a 15 minute car journey to explore the Castle, Mother Shiptons cave, or take a row boat along the river.

Perfect Accommodation and Location, Lovely People

  • 5 of 5

I stayed by myself while attending a family event in York. I found this cottage by accident as all the hotels were booked due to the Jorvik Viking Festival. However, in future this cottage will be my first port of call rather than a last resort. Good size, well and thoughtfully equipped, clean - and lovely views from the rear windows. The owners live next door and are the most helpful and friendly people you could wish for with great local knowledge. I only used the double bedroom myself but there are also two sofabeds in the lounge that would easily cater for more guests. I am planning to return with my son later in the year. Five stars all day long.

Charming cottage and wonderful owners. The cottage was beautifully clean and the eggs, milk and tea and coffee were greatfully received. The view from the living room is second to none. Lovely box of leaflets and folder of things to do. Hopefully it's not long til we return. Thanks for a lovely birthday weekend.

ANOTHER RELAXING STAY IN THIS PROPERTY

  • 5 of 5

Alec and Christine made us feel very welcome again. The apartment is within a few minutes drive of a park and ride bus depot, which gives easy and carefree access to York.

We also found it very easy to get to other places we've visited before, Pateley Bridge, Helmsley, Hutton le Hole, Harrogate etc.

My son's birthday is in January and I will be suggesting to him that we give him and his partner a break at Long Marston.
