About Alec Welham

We moved to Long Marston in late spring 2014 to pursue a self-sufficient lifestyle in the country. As avid gardeners we grow as much fruit and veg' as we can fit on the land. We have won many awards for our vegetables including the National Vegetable Society Championships at Harrogate in September 2015 and 2016.

We also have hand- reared ducks, chickens and turkeys in our garden.

Why Alec Welham chose York

The Cottage is set in beautiful rural surroundings in the heart of North Yorkshire just 6 miles from the City of York.

Built on the historic site of the Battle of Marston Moor with rolling countryside in every direction.

The main cottage originally dates back to 1644 and maintains the original charm of this period. Although the self-contained apartment was built as part of an extension centuries later, its features sympathetically reflect the style of the house.

Harrogate is just a 25 minute car journey, famous for its Victoria architecture, Roman baths, and Betty’s Tea Rooms.

An Ideal base for exploring Yorkshire

  • 5 of 5

Spent a very pleasant week here exploring the lovely yorkshire countryside.

Right next door to site of the Battle of Marston Moor and with good access to York (park and ride is a couple of miles away) and the A1(M) this proved an excellent base.

A friendly welcome from the hosts made us feel very welcome.

Great stay with lovely hosts in a beautiful place

  • 5 of 5

Beautiful countryside with great views of sunset from the window . Charming hosts that made us very comfortable and welcome. The cottage was very clean and comfortable with all we could need . Fresh farm eggs were supplied that were delicious. Yes coffe and general basics were in the cupboards making it very easy to get started. The owners grow amazing prize winning enormous vegetables and were more than happy to show us around the gardens. Over all a lovely place to stay and thoroughly recommended. Would definitely stay again.

The property was as described with everything we needed for a comfortable stay

  • 5 of 5

Alex and Christine greeted us and were able to give us all the information we needed.

There was fresh eggs from their chickens and also tea, coffee and sugar provided which was unexpected but most welcome. The property was well suited for our pet dog with blankets and towels for him provided and plenty of walking nearby. The only drawback for future guests may be the metal staircase to access the property for an older dog or less able guests, however we were well aware of the access from the photos of the property and not a problem for us. All in all a good weekend ,thank you
