Overview

About the property

House on Gower with uninterrupted sea views, 4 bedrooms, sleeps 8

West Winds overlooks the sea in a spectacular position at the southernmost end of the Slade Valley on the Gower Pensinsula. The house is set in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) and is surrounded by National Trust landscapes of Special Scientific Interest (SSI). The location is ideal for families who want peace and seclusion and dramatic coastal scenery; as well as those who enjoy walking and hiking, fishing, canoeing, swimming, surfing and bird-watching. West Winds sleeps 8 (with 2 extra sofa beds for occasional use) and has recently been renovated throughout in a modern minimalist style with ceramic and wooden floors. The house faces over the Atlantic within over an acre of land. The garden has some steep slopes, limestone rock faces and a cave. The large sliding windows from the living room have a stunning sea view, and open onto a patio and front lawn, that are ideal for al fresco eating and sunbathing. There is ample car parking space. From West Winds a rough footpath leads a few hundred yards down to “The Sands”, with a short scramble over the rocks to the beach at Slade. You can fish for bass as well as find crabs and lobsters in the rock pools. Because of the Gulf Stream the sea is usually warm enough for swimming from June to September, and with the right conditions surfing can be good. Further afield there is a beautiful coastal path that goes eastwards around the cliffs of Oxwich Point to Oxwich village (4 miles), and westwards across to Horton and Port Eynon Bay (2 miles). West Winds sleeps 8 people.....although there are also sofa beds upstairs and downstairs for occasional use. Downstairs there is the large living room, kitchen, 3 bedrooms (2 double 1 twin), a modern bathroom and two showers. Upstairs there is a self-contained flat with a double bed, sofa bed, TV, small kitchen and bathroom. This flat is reachable by secure external steps with a handrail at the back of the house. Kitchen facilities: The newly fitted downstairs kitchen has an electric oven, hob and grill, kettle and toaster, dishwasher, microwave and fridge-freezer. Upstairs there is a small kitchen with a washing machine and tumble dryer. There is full oil-fired central heating throughout the property. There is a telephone line downstairs that can be set up for Broadband access. Mobile phone reception can be patchy, with Orange offering the best coverage. The Hwam Monet wood-burning stove can only be used with logs (not coal), and we supply kindling, logs and fire lighters. This property may not be suitable for anyone with limited mobility and childen will need careful supervision. Clean well-behaved dogs are welcome but smoking is not permitted.

Please note that behind West Winds there is a small separate cottage with its own drive and garden. The cottage is currently rented out to our gardener, who is very helpful, and has a considerable local knowledge.

We bought West Winds from my parents in 2004 after spending many long happy holidays there.

What makes this house unique

Gower Peninsula, Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, stunning sea views, access to beach at "the Sands", great coastal walks, and secluded location.

Really lovely property

  • 4 of 5

Hadn't realised that the fourth bedroom would only be accessed from outside! Guess it was implicit. Likewise had understood that "Linen included" would mean towels too so maybe include "Please bring own towels" on list of amenities. Great atmosphere and fabulous view.

Car: necessary

The property is directly overlooking the sea on the Gower pensinsula, with spectacular views, in an area of outstanding natural beauty.

Must see beaches are at Slade (the Sands), Rhosilli, Mewslade, Port Eynon, Oxwich, Tor, Three Cliifs, Caswell, Langland, Bracelet Bay

Shops: The house is remote, and we re4commed getting food delivered from Tesco in Swansea, There is a petrol station/small supermarket at Southgate with a good selection of groceries, meat and vegetables.

In Summer there is a small store and fish & chip shop in Oxwich. Port Eynon, Parkmill and Kittle also have small stores.

Pubs: The Oxwich Hotel and Ship Hotel (Port Eynon) are the nearest pubs, but we recommend the King Arthur Hotel in Reynoldstone or the Joiners in Bishopston (the Swansea Brewery is based here).

Restaurants: Excellent but more expensive food is available at Oxwich Coalhouse and Fairyhill Hotel. Good restaurants in Swansea are Slice (Sketty) and Patrick’s (Mumbles).

Icecream: Joe’s Icecream parlour in Mumbles is famous.

Swansea market: Swansea market is excellent for local meat (salt marsh lamb), fish, cockles, lava bread and vegetables.

Fishmongers: Coakleys of Swansea Market and Mumbles (next door to White Rose Pub) have great fresh fish and shellfish.

Coast/Beach:

Fishing: an excellent shop for tackle and bait is Mainwarings of Sketty Swansea, and boats can be hired from Swansea Docks.

Water Sports: Euphoria of Oxwich Bay (Summer Only) organise Gower boat trips, wind surfing, surfing and water skiing. There is also surfing at Llangennith Beach, Caswell and Langland.

Further Details:

Pick your-own fruit and vegetables: Beynon’s at Nicholaston Farm

A very muddy assault course is at Clyne Farm, Swansea!
