About the Owner

We moved down to Devon from London in 2010, wanting to immerse ourselves in the beautiful South Devon countryside after many years of living in London. We are very happy living here not far from Totnes, nestled between Dartmoor and the sea, with the river Dart snaking through the landscape.

When we first came across the Colmer Estate, in early spring, the snowdrops were out, and our ten year old daughter went wild about it, and so did we! It is a beautiful 28 acre estate, with a real sense of history to it, both beautifully landscaped, and left wild in many parts, with outdoor and indoor pools, an all weather tennis court, a walled garden with adventure playground, a lake, flower meadows and woods. It is a real haven, both for humans and wildlife!

Guestbook comments from the owner

"We had the most wonderful week at your cottage. Everything was great including the weather, and we would be interested for future bookings. The indoor pool was a great bonus, and our three year old grandson learnt to swim on the second day! Thank-you for enabling us to have a brilliant family holiday." - The Gough family.

"The Cottage was great, and the Colmer Estate is a very nice place. We were lucky with the weather, and enjoyed some trips out knowing that we could come back and chill out." - The Crilly family.

"Very pleased with the cottage, which we found very comfortable" - The Wood family.

Great stay

  • 5 of 5

We had a lovely stay. The weather was kind, the cottage was excellent and spotless, there was so much to do on the Colmer Estate (we swam every day), and we visited lots of very good beaches including Bigbury and Bantham. Both sets of adults had fantastic meals at the Riverford Kitchen too. Thank you Helene and Gavin!

Excellent, especially with children.

  • 5 of 5

We have four children, so in order to avoid World War Three, there needs to be something for everyone. This is the case: fishing lake for our second son, tennis for our first and third sons, swimming for all three plus our daughter. Then away from the site, interesting towns to visit, lovely countryside, choice of beaches all accessible. Everything you need in the property, and the owner is very helpful and friendly.

Superb stay at Mill Cottage - Colmore

“Superb stay at Mill Cottage on the Colmore Estate”

We had a delightful stay at Mill Cottage. Very comfortable and well equipped and the estate was so peaceful. A great location for exploring South Devon. Some days we had the pool to ourselves! We were hoping for good weather but I must say it exceeded our expectations. We will certainly consider booking again.

Special interest holidays:

The Colmer Estate is set in the beautiful landscape of Devon's South Hams, nestled between the moors and the sea. With rolling green hills, breathtaking rugged coastline, with wide sandy golden beaches, and hidden coves to die for. The nearest beaches are at Bantham and Bigbury, and Mothecombe and Wonwell, all about 7 miles away.

Within easy reach too, is Dartmoor National Park, with its magical rocky tors, wild horses, heathlands, and wooded river valleys, where the Dart river starts its journey as it snakes through on to its final destination at Dartmouth.

Coast/Beach:

Many beautiful beaches 15 minutes drive away. Bigbury and Bantham - large expanses of beautiful sand, as well as Burgh Island that you can walk to a low tide, and return on the sea tractor, if the tide has come in! Bigbury is great for surfing too. (The Discovery Surf School is there). Also within same radius are beautiful Mothecombe and Wonwell beaches, on opposite sides of the Erme Estuary, and rugged Aymer Cove, a short walk from Ringmore village.

Travel:

Nearest airport: Bristol, Exeter, Nearest railway: Plymouth, Totnes

Distances:

Bigbury 7 miles, Kingsbridge 6 miles.

Further Details:

Bigbury with its beautiful expanses of sand. At low tide you can walk over to Burgh Island, and come back on the sea tractor if you get caught out by the tide! A great place for surfing, windsurfing, kitesurfing, body boarding. Here you will find the Discovery Surf School.

Bantham: a continuation of the vast expanse of sand at Bigbury, but separated at high tide by the Avon estuary. Many families with small children come here.

Thurlestone: A lovely sandy beach - at its far end it becomes South Milton Sands, and there is a cafe there. If you walk from Thurlestone towards Bantham, along the coast next to the golf course, you will come to some delightful beaches and coves.

Mothecome and Wonwell beaches: delightful beaches each on opposite sides of the Erme estuary. Mothecome is a private beach, open to the public on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays.

Dartmoor:

Widecombe-in-the-moor: The drive here gives you spectacular views

Hound Tor: Great for climbers! And great circular walks

Dartmeet: Where several branches of the Dart meet. Walk up river from the busy restaurant there, and find yourself in a beautiful and tranquil river setting.

Holne: A lovely village with tea-room and great walks down to the Dart.

Blackdown Hills: Peaceful wooded Avon valley 1 mile from Colmer, with river and ancient Iron Age fort.

Steam train from Buckfastleigh to Totnes along picturesque route following river Dart.

Round Robin trip: by boat up the estuary to Dartmouth, steam train, and open top double decker bus. Start at Dartmouth or Totnes.

Pennywell Farm and Woodlands theme park for children.

Plymouth Aquarium: Allegedly the best in the country.

Golf courses at Bigbury, Dartmouth and Thurlestone.
