Gite With Mountain Views And Large Shared Swimming Pool Set In 29 Hectares Of Pr

Overview

Property

Updated: 17-Jul-2016
Apartment in St Julia de Bec, Quillan, Aude, Languedoc-Roussillon, France - Highly Rustic And Rural, A Working Farm With Sheep, Horses And Goats Close Enough To A Village

We are an offbeat retreat preferring the chaos of human and animal behaviour to that of slick management. The conversation flows freely and unfortunately for my kidneys so does the wine. Local detoxification facilities are available and we plan soon to install a portable unit.

Aude is home to some of the most warlike Rugby in the world and as well as being rich in such Celtic ritualistic war, this region is able to change from Tuscany to Devon in an instant. A region emerging from the dark period where women adopted a respectful mien and walked at least ten paces behind their man, who adopting a braggadocio manner attempt to play pétanque while balancing a glass of wine in the other hand.

Gites 1, 2, & 3 are on two floors. The living and dining area on the first floor has a kitchen and a toilet with bathroom and shower. The second is via a spiral staircase leading onto three bedrooms, double, single and a bunkroom. French doors and windows look out onto the garden, the mountain, and an ankle deep stream running through the property. A rear terrace to all of the Gites provides a secluded area for reading or sunbathing.

Our larger Gite 4 is also on two floors (apply for pricing). The first floor has a small corridor serving a bathroom, a double bedroom, and a kid's room with a single bed and bunks. On the third floor is a large kitchen, dining, lounge area, and serving two double bedrooms is another bathroom this time with a bath.

In front of the Mouli d'al Roc is a large garden with tables and chairs and koi carp pond with two Japanese bridges leading on and off the small island. We have a bar and games room equipped with pool, table football and satellite television. There is also a large outdoor heated swimming pool with a Zen garden and Tiki bar. Our Wi-Fi service reaches the telescope observatory 500 metres away. There is also a commercial washroom and gas-fired barbeques are available, once the koi are mustered for their roll call.

Mouli d’al Roc, the Catalan spelling is a working farm and we request that guests with pets supervise them accordingly. For child control, we supply two types of portable electric fencing, the three-phase Rambo model, which THE MANAGEMENT recommends families taking out extra insurance policy, and the 12-volt Moppet causing only temporary Shirley Temple curls. Last summer’s suggestion box contained sensible requests for cattle prods and for those children intent on making a breakout, we now have Tasers and plenty of cartridges.

Nearby is the village of Rennes le Château upon which many modern novels use as their focal point. With its bizarre Masonic church, it is a vital connection to the history of the Cathare and their treasure. Was Jesus Christ buried at Peche Cardou? Was the womb of a pregnant Mary Magdalene in fact the Holy Grail? Sang Raal or San Graal? Does the royal line of the House of David continue to this day? Rennes le Château and the Great Pyramid, prior knowledge of latitude and longitude?

An isosceles triangle connecting Rennes le Château, Bornholm (Danish Island) and Jerusalem? The Cathar Parfaits, who escaped from the besieged fortress of Montsegur, perhaps carrying not treasure but documentary evidence of their Messiah's final resting place?

Other areas to visit of a less esoteric nature are the 'Nature' Parks of the only wolf sanctuary in Europe at Ax-les-Thermes, or the wild animals at Les Angles, the 'Safari' Park at Sigean, the bison and deer at Lapenne and the Butterfly Garden at Lesparrou, which as of yet no one has been brave enough to admit to visiting. Correction, a guest this year made the visit and put me well in my place by extolling its virtues.

Take time to visit the extraordinary, fortified medieval city of Carcassonne or Collioure, one of the most beautiful seaside resorts of France, much favoured by the Impressionist painters. The city of Ax-les-Thermes and the nearby village of Rennes les Bains are spas, famous for their healing sulphur springs and Mirepoix with its medieval central market place with its wooden vaulting covered sidewalks.

We are much too close to the wines of the Corbierre, and within easy reach of the beaches of Perpignan (90 km) which is officially the hottest place in France and where all world wind surfing speed records are set in the Gulf de Lyon, which stretches from Marseille down to Barcelona and the ski resorts of Andorra (130 km) and only three hours from Barcelona and two hours to the France/Spanish frontier. If you are in the mood to purchase a new digital camcorder, it is best to make your choice, hold onto your money, and then pay a visit to Andorra. It is a duty free Principality where all types of luxury goods can be up to 50% cheaper than in mainland Europe. The drive up there is magnificent and the tax-free price of fuel, alcohol and tobacco more than justifies the day excursion.

There are various summer activities from Tennis in Quillan (a great title for a novel), to the activity centre, where you can risk life and limb with white water rafting, canoeing, mountain climbing and canyoning. It is also possible to hire mountain bikes (VTT).

Facilities

From the Owner

Thousands of kilometres of well maintained and chevron marked trails suitable for walkers that take you through glorious countryside. I am assured that it is possible to walk using some of the Route de Paye Cathare from Quillan to Barcelona (350 km) and only cross two main roads. Walking in the Pyrenees, especially with the Cathare castles as focal points is a very spiritual experience. You can head off into the mist of history on a one-way journey and always rely on us to pick you up at the end of the day. L’Aude is a wilderness of majestic and raw beauty, unfortunately stained by the Catholic Church’s systematic genocide of the naive Cathare, the only Christian crusade to take place in Europe.
