About the property

A converted former Coach House, equipped to a high standard & benefiting from modern appliances

Montgomery's Coach House (named after one of our sadly departed dogs) is a fully equipped, self-catering holiday home. It is located in the grounds of the Agent's House, originally built for the land agent of the nearby Whitney Court Estate. The owners, who live in the main house, are on hand should you need assistance, but as the property is completely self-contained, you will otherwise be left in peace to enjoy your stay.

We like to think we offer high quality, stylish accommodation in a relaxing rural location. Underfloor heating throughout the ground floor, as well as a wood burner, make the Coach House perfect for a cosy get-away at any time of the year. We also welcome pets and, as dog owners ourselves, do not believe our guests should have to compromise on their holiday property.

The property has its own outside space, including private deck and a grassy area, which is fenced and gated, for use by pet owners.

A stone's throw from the River Wye and in the border lands between Herefordshire in the English West Midlands & Powys in Mid-Wales, we are ideally situated as a touring base for getting to know the picturesque Wye Valley and beyond. We are less than 5 miles from Hay on Wye, the famous bookshop capital, where you will find a variety of small, individual shops, cafes, an ice cream parlour, antique shops, a great deli & a Thursday morning market, to name but a few of its attractions. The annual Hay festival is attended by thousands of visitors, including celebrated authors, thinkers, scientists, musicians and film makers at the end of May/beginning of June. If you intend to visit during this period, please book early to avoid disappointment!

The cathedral city of Hereford, with its renowned chain library and Mappa Mundi, and the market town of Leominster are approximately 15 miles east and north east of Whitney on Wye, respectively. The beautiful town of Ludlow, well known for its high number of reputable eateries is also within easy striking distance by car.

More locally, you can drive along the Herefordshire 'Black and White Trail', a circular route which takes you through a number of villages with pretty houses and churches. There is many an interesting stop-off point for a stroll or refreshment along the way. Throughout the area, there is a growing focus on the 'slow food' movement and great pride is taken in the quality of local produce, such as cheese production, cider farms, chocolate making, micro breweries and, of course, many wonderful cafes, restaurants and pubs to relax and unwind in - the nearest of which is only a two minute walk from your front door! Just a three minute walk away is a farm shop, which also does a very nice line in coffee, home-made cakes, lunches and snacks, as well as a petrol station and general stores. The latest addition to village amenities is a pop-up, take-away food outlet across the road, serving authentic Nepalese and Thai style food six nights a week.

For the energetic, there is a range of activities available within easy reach of Montgomery's Coach House. Walks along Offa's Dyke and the Herefordshire Trail, as well as local trails direct from the house. Hay Bluff, the Black Mountains & Brecon Beacons are just a short drive away. Canoeing along the River Wye is also a great way to spend the day and observe wildlife, we could go on!

About The Agent's House

My partner & I have spent considerable time travelling and staying in hotels, bed & breakfast and holiday cottage accommodation over the years. We believe this has given us some insight into what makes a welcoming & comfortable stay and we've tried to translate this into our own standards, the way we run our property and present our accommodation.

The Agent's House purchased this cottage in 2012

Why The Agent's House chose Whitney-on-Wye

We fell in love with the beautiful Herefordshire countryside many years ago and when we had the opportunity to move back to the area, we spent considerable time finding what was for us the right property, in the right location. We hope others will share our view and take advantage of their stay at the Agent's House/ Montgomery's Coach House to explore and enjoy the surrounding area. We will be happy to help with any questions you may have on planning the itinerary for your stay - if indeed you plan to do more than relax and stroll to the nearby pub or cafe!

What makes this cottage unique

The Agent's House is a distinctive looking property and retains much of the character of its Edwardian origins. The property was built around 1905 for the land agent employed by the Whitney Court estate.

Montgomery's Coach House has been completely converted from an empty barn, divided into carriage house, stables and pig sty! The original doors have been retained, together with as many original features as permitted by modern building regulations. We are extremely proud of the end result and feedback from guests appears to indicate it has been transformed into a comfortable and cosy place to stay; characterful, but with the benefit of modern appliances!

The Coach House is also listed on Trip Advisor if you would like to check out additional feedback from some of our guests.

Guestbook comments from the manager

Had a long weekend away in Monty's coach house and we were very sad to leave. The coach house itself has the wow factor and we couldn't believe our luck as Steve showed us around what was ours for 3 nights. We loved it so much we joked about moving in permanantly. Lots of character plus modern fittings and our favourite, the log fire in the living room. The most equipped self catering kitchen we've ever had and essentials provided in the fridge too! The cleanliness of the coach house was immaculate. The welcome basket for us and treats for the dog really gave a great first impression. Steve and Alison were both friendly and close by if visitors have any queries. What is provided by the owners goes way beyond expectation and is fantastic value for money. On our last evening we had dinner at The Boat inn which was delicious and huge portions! And only about 50m down the road. If like us you have a dog with you then there are lots of fab woodland walking routes to explore which our dog loved, as did we. The property has a small garden for dogs to use, which also has robins and rabbits visiting which is lovely to watch from the kitchen. I'm not someone who regularly writes reviews but this place is too great not to give them credit! We will definitely be back again in the future.

Top quality holiday stay

A beautifully restored coach house, restored to the highest standard with everything provided to ensure comfort.

A very welcome warm welcome from Alison and Steve who provided foodie goodies to start us off and were at hand for any queries we might have.

We loved the cottage and the area is great for Hereford on one side and Brecon on the other.

Owner's Response: We are more than happy that you all enjoyed staying in our Coach House Peter, and are fairly confident that you are the only guests to have had a day out walking with miniature donkeys while staying with us! Being equidistant between Hereford and Brecon makes us nicely placed for a few shops but the countryside around here, as hopefully you discovered, is also well worth the trip! Hopefully you will come back and see us again. Kind regards

Wonderful rustic retreat

  • 5 of 5

We have had a wonderful time.

The coach house is beautiful and was immaculate.

We made very welcome.. and looked after very well as there was heavy snow and a power cut! Steve came to check on us (we have baby twins) and made sure we had supplies!

Owner's Response: The weather wasn't at it best was it Alex. Despite the foot of snow and the temporally enforced darkness we are pleased that you still managed to enjoy your time with us! Hopefully you will consider staying again when the summer comes back, I am sure you will find it to be a whole new experience with a little sun and some electricity...... On the plus side you will have a good story to tell the twins about their first holiday when they are a little older. Thank you for choosing to stay with us. Kind regards to you all.

Had a great weekend away in a clean & comfy home from home in the middle of gorgeous countryside.

  • 5 of 5

Stayed for the weekend to get away from the fireworks for the dogs. Was greeted by Steve and shown around his wonderful warm cottage. Was very touched by the welcome basket of goodies for us & the dogs. I did a big food shop before we arrived but very pleasantly surprised by the thought of tea coffee sugar & fresh milk there waiting. Everything has been thought through for whoever stays there - washing up liquid, kitchen roll, loo roll, even down to two flasks for walks on the gorgeous walks around the cottage. Pleased with enclosed garden and driveway for the dogs to wander. Beds are very generous and very comfy!

Really enjoyed our stay and would definitely revisit. Highly recommended!!

Owner's Response: Thank you very much Sally S for your review, it was a shame that you had to leave a little earlier than you had planned but by the sound of it you enjoyed your time with us. As you noticed, we do have a basic stock of items for when our guests arrive - it is much better to sit and have a cup of tea after a long drive than spend the next half hour unloading the car in search of tea bags! The same goes for some other necessities; we have stayed in places where there has not even been salt and pepper in the cupboard (something most people forget to pack) and, dare I say, a half used loo roll for four guests staying a week! I know we are 'self-catering' but we do believe a little effort on our part goes a long way to make our guests feel welcome - and we look forward to welcoming you back before too long.

impeccably clean, dog friendly well stocked with good quality furnishings.

  • 5 of 5

One of the cleanest self catering cottages ever stayed in. Very dog friendly, quality fittings and fixtures. Comfy beds, large fluffy towels - always take my own but didn't need to. Shame on an A Road but nothing they can do about that. Highly recommend.

Owner's Response: Very many thanks Kathy G, we do appreciate it when our guests take the time to write a few words on how they found us, and 'impeccably clean' are two very important words as far as we are concerned. With our 'fixtures and fittings' we very much take the view that, when staying away for a few days, guests would always want 'as good as or better' than they might have at home - no-one wants to be worse off of holiday surely! We do hope you will consider staying with us again sometime. Kind regards.

A lovely cottage, clean, comfortable and dog friendly

  • 5 of 5

We stayed four nights in this cottage, and it was everything we could have hoped for. Quiet, clean, tastefully decorated and dog friendly. We went to the local pub on the first evening and it was fine, basic pub food. The countryside was lovely with the Autumn colours and Hay was good to potter round. The only little thing we can think of to add is we could have done with a family sized casserole dish, but other than that the cottage is very well equipped.

Owner's Response: Thank you Elizabeth F for taking the time to leave a review - it was kind of you to do so. Obviously we are pleased you found things to your liking and enjoyed your stay. I have to say the various woods we have on our doorstep are indeed looking lovely at this time of year, the colours are fantastic. Sorry you couldn't find a family sized casserole dish when you needed one. A bit late to mention it now I know, but for the benefit of any future guests, should you need something but cannot find it you need only come and ask us - if we have whatever you need you can have it! (Afternote: A family size casserole dish can now be found in the kitchen!) Many thanks again Elizabeth, please consider staying with us again the next time you fancy a few days away from home.

Alison and Steve had thought of everything. The perfect holiday cottage.

  • 5 of 5

The two of us arrived with 2 dogs in tow. The cottage more that lived up to our expectations. The website photos give a true picture of the accommodation, and the facilities even included equipment for dog washing and a small enclosed area for their personal use! If you're looking to get away from the rat race for a few days, look no further.

Owner's Response: How kind Suzanne, we love to see the word perfect in the heading for a review! We would never claim such an accolade for ourselves but we do try to ensue our guests (two and for legged) want for nothing..... Getting away from the rat race is our speciality, while there is plenty to see and do in these parts sitting and taking it easy from time to time is also definitely worth doing! Kind regards.
