Overview

About the property

A converted former Coach House, equipped to a high standard & benefiting from modern appliances

Montgomery's Coach House (named after one of our sadly departed dogs) is a fully equipped, self-catering holiday home. It is located in the grounds of the Agent's House, originally built for the land agent of the nearby Whitney Court Estate. The owners, who live in the main house, are on hand should you need assistance, but as the property is completely self-contained, you will otherwise be left in peace to enjoy your stay.

We like to think we offer high quality, stylish accommodation in a relaxing rural location. Underfloor heating throughout the ground floor, as well as a wood burner, make the Coach House perfect for a cosy get-away at any time of the year. We also welcome pets and, as dog owners ourselves, do not believe our guests should have to compromise on their holiday property.

The property has its own outside space, including private deck and a grassy area, which is fenced and gated, for use by pet owners.

A stone's throw from the River Wye and in the border lands between Herefordshire in the English West Midlands & Powys in Mid-Wales, we are ideally situated as a touring base for getting to know the picturesque Wye Valley and beyond. We are less than 5 miles from Hay on Wye, the famous bookshop capital, where you will find a variety of small, individual shops, cafes, an ice cream parlour, antique shops, a great deli & a Thursday morning market, to name but a few of its attractions. The annual Hay festival is attended by thousands of visitors, including celebrated authors, thinkers, scientists, musicians and film makers at the end of May/beginning of June. If you intend to visit during this period, please book early to avoid disappointment!

The cathedral city of Hereford, with its renowned chain library and Mappa Mundi, and the market town of Leominster are approximately 15 miles east and north east of Whitney on Wye, respectively. The beautiful town of Ludlow, well known for its high number of reputable eateries is also within easy striking distance by car.

More locally, you can drive along the Herefordshire 'Black and White Trail', a circular route which takes you through a number of villages with pretty houses and churches. There is many an interesting stop-off point for a stroll or refreshment along the way. Throughout the area, there is a growing focus on the 'slow food' movement and great pride is taken in the quality of local produce, such as cheese production, cider farms, chocolate making, micro breweries and, of course, many wonderful cafes, restaurants and pubs to relax and unwind in - the nearest of which is only a two minute walk from your front door! Just a three minute walk away is a farm shop, which also does a very nice line in coffee, home-made cakes, lunches and snacks, as well as a petrol station and general stores. The latest addition to village amenities is a pop-up, take-away food outlet across the road, serving authentic Nepalese and Thai style food six nights a week.

For the energetic, there is a range of activities available within easy reach of Montgomery's Coach House. Walks along Offa's Dyke and the Herefordshire Trail, as well as local trails direct from the house. Hay Bluff, the Black Mountains & Brecon Beacons are just a short drive away. Canoeing along the River Wye is also a great way to spend the day and observe wildlife, we could go on!

About The Agent's House

My partner & I have spent considerable time travelling and staying in hotels, bed & breakfast and holiday cottage accommodation over the years. We believe this has given us some insight into what makes a welcoming & comfortable stay and we've tried to translate this into our own standards, the way we run our property and present our accommodation.

The Agent's House purchased this cottage in 2012

Why The Agent's House chose Herefordshire

We fell in love with the beautiful Herefordshire countryside many years ago and when we had the opportunity to move back to the area, we spent considerable time finding what was for us the right property, in the right location. We hope others will share our view and take advantage of their stay at the Agent's House/ Montgomery's Coach House to explore and enjoy the surrounding area. We will be happy to help with any questions you may have on planning the itinerary for your stay - if indeed you plan to do more than relax and stroll to the nearby pub or cafe!

What makes this cottage unique

The Agent's House is a distinctive looking property and retains much of the character of its Edwardian origins. The property was built around 1905 for the land agent employed by the Whitney Court estate.

Montgomery's Coach House has been completely converted from an empty barn, divided into carriage house, stables and pig sty! The original doors have been retained, together with as many original features as permitted by modern building regulations. We are extremely proud of the end result and feedback from guests appears to indicate it has been transformed into a comfortable and cosy place to stay; characterful, but with the benefit of modern appliances!

The Coach House is also listed on Trip Advisor if you would like to check out additional feedback from some of our guests.

Guestbook comments from the manager

Had a long weekend away in Monty's coach house and we were very sad to leave. The coach house itself has the wow factor and we couldn't believe our luck as Steve showed us around what was ours for 3 nights. We loved it so much we joked about moving in permanantly. Lots of character plus modern fittings and our favourite, the log fire in the living room. The most equipped self catering kitchen we've ever had and essentials provided in the fridge too! The cleanliness of the coach house was immaculate. The welcome basket for us and treats for the dog really gave a great first impression. Steve and Alison were both friendly and close by if visitors have any queries. What is provided by the owners goes way beyond expectation and is fantastic value for money. On our last evening we had dinner at The Boat inn which was delicious and huge portions! And only about 50m down the road. If like us you have a dog with you then there are lots of fab woodland walking routes to explore which our dog loved, as did we. The property has a small garden for dogs to use, which also has robins and rabbits visiting which is lovely to watch from the kitchen. I'm not someone who regularly writes reviews but this place is too great not to give them credit! We will definitely be back again in the future.

Owner's Response: Many thanks Adam for your review, it is much appreciated. Apart from the slightly iffy weather (which was a little disappointing as we had specifically ordered the sun for you!) we are of course delighted that you all enjoyed your short time with us and found things to your liking. Hay is a lovely place to wander around and we are spoilt, considering our rural location, with having great facilities on our doorstep and lots of things to do. Thank you for your recommendation and we hope you all come back sometime soon. Kind regards.

Best holiday stay ever.

  • 5 of 5

It's like living in one of those TV old places, refurbished to the very top modern standards. Steve ( the owner ) has done most remarkable job, by turning an old coach house/stables into most comfortable modern cottage.

Location is superb for exploring Herefordshire, Wales and Shropshire. The cottage is SPOTLESSLY clean, neat, tidy and cozy. We've enjoyed it so very much, we're considering to return next Summer ( that if they'll have us ).

Thank you for adorable week in Herefordshire, Steve and Alison.

Owner's Response: First things first Yuri, of course we will have you back! It was really nice to meet you and your charming family. Thank you for the review and the compliments on our conversion and cleanliness - we took a lot of trouble to try and get the first bit right and always do our very best to ensure the entire property is 'as new' for each and every one of our guests. You certainly got out and about quite a lot during your time with us but I know there are still plenty of places left for you to visit and see; as you say, this is a lovely part of the world and talking with you it seems that you know our country better than some who live here! We hope to see you all again next year. Best wishes.

Just spent a lovely five days in Steve and Alison's lovely cottage. A beautifully decorated and comfortable cottage. One of the best equipped we have stayed in . I will definitely recommend this cottage to friends and family and wouldn't hesitate to stay there again x

Owner's Response: We are so pleased that you enjoyed your stay with us, it was just a pity that the third member of your party couldn't make the trip to Herefordshire in the end. It was great to meet you both and nice to have a little chat when I bumped into you outside the Coach House. Luckily the weather was very kind to you both while you were with us; it poured down here for the rest of the day after you departed, never mind, we needed that rain! Kind regards.

Perfect location, perfect hideaway

  • 5 of 5

Our meet and greet by Steve was very welcolming along with the basket of goodies and cider: a lovely touch and thank you. Beds were soooo comfy with plenty of room and extension lead in drawer which was very thoughtful in today's world of gadgets!. Kitchen was well equipped and had everything to allow us to cook. The whole cottage is furnished to a really high standard, and the decor has inspired me to go John Lewis shopping more often!

Lovely walks nearby, Boat Inn pub literally next door and a big Co-op on the way to Hay.

A wonderful stay with the highlight of our trips being Henryhd waterfalls: a must see.

Thank you for a truly welcoming stay.

Owner's Response: Thank you Caron F for your very lovely review. It is great to hear that you enjoyed your time in our Coach House; West Herefordshire, and adjoining Wales of course which as you discovered is only a mile away, really are great places to visit! We do try to ensure that our guests are comfortable and have everything they are likely to need while away from home - it seems from what you say that we achieved that in your case but are always open to suggestions! We hope you will consider staying with us once more the next time you head 'out West', we would love to see you all again. Kind regards.

This is one of the most delightful and homely properties you will stay in, everything home comfort you could ever wish for has been thought of. Steve & Alison made us feel very welcome from the moment we arrived with a full tour of the property and equipment. This was our 1st holiday with our new 16 week old Puppy and I was very nervous, I had no need to be, there was a lovely area specially build for your furry family and the Property is very pet friendly, Cooper even had his own dog treats left for him by Steve & Alison. If you are looking for Beautiful, homely property then this is definitely for you but be warned you will not want to leave! We will without doubt be going back.

Owner's Response: While we alway make an extra effort to ensure our guests feel really welcome when they arrive, it does help if they bring a 16 week old puppy with them! We can understand why you may have felt a tad nervous letting him loose on us but, as you now know, the surrounds are reasonably secure and any 'accidents' from a chap so young, on our oak and flagstone floors on the ground floor, are easily dealt with. But enough about Cooper...... We are of course delighted you found everything to your liking and that you intend coming and staying with us again - don't leave it too long or Cooper with be the size of a small pony! (How did I get back to Cooper again?) Kind regards.
