About Gillian McNulty

I live with my husband in the north west midlands on the south Cheshire, north Staffordshire border. I am a recently retired teacher of modern foreign languages and I specialised in French. My husband is a teacher of Economics, Business Studies and Government and Politics.

We both love the French way of life, the people and culture. We fell in love with the Pays d'Auge countryside in Normandy whilst on holiday there in 2003, and still enjoy discovering the delights of the area.

Gillian McNulty purchased this cottage in 2003

Why Gillian McNulty chose Lisieux area

My husband and I bought this property in 2003. We went to Normandy for a holiday to visit the Landing Beaches and the Bayeux Tapestry, and discovered that this property was for sale. We immediately fell in love with it, and decided to make a purchase.

We love the area for it's peace and quiet, and natural beauty, and although situated in the countryside, it is not isolated as the towns of Livarot and St. Pierre sur Dives are within 5-7 minutes drive away.

If you like the seaside, the resorts of Deauville, Trouville, Cabourg and Houlgate are only 40 minutes drive away, and the city of Caen is nearby with its famous Abbey built by William the Conqueror.

What makes this cottage unique

The property is easily accessible being only 50 minutes drive from the port of Caen, just outside the town of St. Pierre sur Dives off the D4.

Whether you like the peace and quiet of the countryside, city life or the seaside, the area has everything to offer. You can enjoy walking through country lanes and beautiful countryside from the front door without getting in the car. The town of Lisieux with its basilica cathedral, and the historic city of Caen are nearby, and the seaside is only a 40 minute drive away via one of the prettiest villages of France, Beuvron en Auge. The famous port of Honfleur, and the Haras du Pin both make wonderful days out, about an hour's drive away.

If you simply want to relax, you can enjoy sunbathing on the sun terrace, with a glass cider.

Half-Timbered Cottage In The Heart Of Normandy
average rating of 4.0 based on 7 reviews

Lovely rustic cottage in rural France.

  • 4 of 5

This tiny cottage made a good base from which to explore aspects of Normandy, from William the Conqueror to the D-Day Landing beaches. The weather was particularly hot during our stay and we made full use of the shade offered in the garden, lying on the sun loungers provided. Local shops were not too far away, meaning we could be fairly self-sufficient when we wanted to be. The bedroom is on a mezzanine floor and could be a tight fit if you are tall, or a little unsteady on your feet. Overall, a lovely start to our holiday.

A little peace of paradise

  • 5 of 5

A lovely example of Normandy cottage in a quiet setting, which was just what we wanted. The garden was lovely and had the sun all day on the patio, ideal for outside living. The cottage on arrival was lovely and clean and the caretakers were very friendly and forthcoming with local information and potential places to stay. The cidre, bread and milk were most welcome.

The only minor downside was the potential lack of privacy if the other house on the site was occupied, but still wouldn't detract from a wonderful setting.

Would recommend if looking for a relaxing holiday, or for the adventurous as many great places to visit within an hour drive.

A Peaceful Hideaway

  • 4 of 5

We intend to return at a future date and have already recommended the cottage to friends. Standards were good and very suitable for two people. The immediate area has much to offer with excellent tourist attractions a few miles away.

Nice gite in good location

  • 3 of 5

Situated down a quiet lane and a short drive from a village, the gite is ideal for a couple.

The mezanine bedroom has a futon bed. There is a sofa bed downstairs. The kitchen is basic but adequate and the bathroom is downstairs. There is a nice seating area outside. There is no TV or internet in the gite but you can sit outside the owners house and connect to their WIFI, but this is not ideal when it's raining.

The location is good for exploring the Pay d'Auge region. Beuvron en Auge and surrounding villages are beautiful. Honfleur is wonderful and about 45 mins drive. There is plenty to fill a weeks stay.

The owners were there to meet us when we arrived at gone midnight ! They kindly left us a baguette, croissants and some milk for breakfast.

Gezellig, authentiek huisje op rustige locatie

  • 4 of 5

Een sfeervol, klein vakantieverblijf in authentiek Normandisch vakwerkhuisje. En een terras/ tuin waar je zowel in de zon als in de schaduw kunt genieten! Voldoende privacy.
