About the Owner

Linda and I live with our teenage daughter Daymer in the Peak District in the village of Eyam. We have two rental properties in Crete Villa Daymer and Villa Skye. We also have a rental cottage on the Lizard in Cornwall named Little Pebble.

We first travelled to Crete in 2001 when we bought the plot of land that Villa Daymer sits on. The area is fantastic still, with the seaside resort of Almyrida stones throw away. When we retire we intend to spend six months in Crete and the rest in the UK.

We bought the plot in 2002 and the following year we design and had it built. The setting is perfect with uninterrupted views down Souda Bay and out to open sea to the front and to the rear of the property the white mountains which are covered in snow in the Spring making a fantastic back drop. The village of Plaka is a five minute stroll ,here there are several very good eateries and a small supermarket where you can buy all you need for you're stay. The coastal resort of Almyrida is a two minute drive hear there is a crescent shaped sandy beach ,shallow shelving into the bay making it ideal for swimming . In front of the villa the are olive groves that lead down to the sea ,this is accessed by a tack and runs all the way along the front and back to the villa in a circular route.

Plaka is a friendly little village which is set out in a horseshoe shape on the hillside. it has a excellent view of Almyrida, Souda Bay and the azure Sea of Crete.

The village is green with plants and largely in a lovely natural environment, as it is set on the slopes of Mount Drapanokefala with its verdant, varied vegetation. You can see olive and plane trees, low scrub and even organic farms, which do not detract from the charm of the area.

Plaka has about 400 permanent inhabitants, a quarter of whom are foreigners, mainly British. The village largely preserves its traditional character, although the locals will tell you that recent building has meant it is beginning to lose its distinctive atmosphere.

Plaka has a lovely main square which is the focal point of the village. This is where locals and visitors a like meet in the cafeterias and kafeneia.

Villa Daymer and Plaka are a great base for walkers either using the coastal routes or heading for the hills and the snow capped mountains. There is a circular walk around the headland in front of villa Daymer where you can enjoy the beautiful wild flower interspersed in amongst the olive groves and enjoy the wonderful views towards Almyrida bay and out to the open sea.

Further up the hillside you come to the pretty village of Kokkinochorio ,here there is a small glass factory where you can see its craftsmen changing the molten glass into incredible looking lights .

The views fro Kokkinochorio are panoramic with Drapanos kefala a volcano shaped mountain behind and view down Souda bay and out to sea in front .There are also a couple of bars and a small village grocers shop
