Crumble Cottage was a milking shed that we have been transformed into a cosy romantic hideaways, full of character with many of the original features such as the oak beams and stonework. We undertook most of the work ourselves and have the scars and stories to prove it. The cottages is set in seven acres of mixed farmland, ancient woodland, water gardens and productive areas where we grow our own fruit and vegetables. In the summer and autumn we ask guests if they would like a complimentary basket of our excess produce. (Please note not always available depends on how successful we have been.) This year we have also started keeping bees.
Sarah is a horticulturalist and garden designer (CHort MCIHort) running her own landscape business from home and when she can escape loves taking people around the gardens.
Stewart works with technology and dementia and spends his spare time restoring vintage cars and bikes and is always delighted to show you his workshop and tool collection!
Both of us are keen nature lovers and much of the work we do externally encourages wildlife, and our reward has been a huge increase in the diversity of creatures visiting and living here. Including hedgehogs, dragon flies, otters, toads, kingfishers, newts, house martins, swallows, buzzards, bats and owls to name but a few.
Not content with surviving building Crumble Cottage ourselves, this last year we completed building Upper Crumble, a similar offer with hot tub in private courtyard. Also to be found on Owners Direct.

Beautiful quiet and sheltered location. The bustling medieval village of Cartmel is only a ten minute walk away. We get very little light pollution so star gazing has become another great attraction. We love going to restaurants and are spoilt for choice as we are surrounded by many award winning places to eat. Simon Rogan’s L ’Enclume with two Michelin stars, but there are many more exciting places to choose from. Always ask us for advice we try to keep very up to date with research and reviews! The village also has many other specialist shops, pubs and cafes. Unsworth Yard is a favourite where you can enjoy a glass of wine or beer brewed on the premises outside in their courtyard and have cheese brought to you from Cartmel Cheeses. A lovely way to spend an afternoon.
Beautiful peaceful location please see our reviews with lots of walks right from the door and only a mile from sophisticated civilisation.
Very romantic cosy cottage, with log stove, oak beams, crystal chandeliers and shutters at the tiny windows. Secure car park, old bikes to borrow, fishing licence. Owners on site but out of sight.
Our first taste of Crumble - perfectly delicious! We look forward to returning for another helping or two......very soon. Aug 2014 Christina and Terry Dorset.
A perfect place to stay in - the cottage, the village, the hosts were all amazing. Thank you September 2014 Neil and Laria West Midlands.
Fab location, lovely walks from the cottage. Cartmel is a foodies heaven, L'Enclume and Rogan and Co were outstanding. We had a lovely relaxing break. October 2014 Julie and Barry Cheshire.
The cottage is beautifully presented and equipped with everything you could ever wish for, including some essentials and special treats to get us started in the kitchen!
Our hosts could not have been more friendly and helpful, from giving us tips on places to visit to helping us out with supplies of fresh herbs for our dinner.
Make sure you explore the extensive gardens - we had a lovely evening watching the stream trickling by with a glass of wine in hand.
A wonderful cottage with everything you need for a relaxing, top quality break in the Southern Lakes.
Beautifully renovated farm building in a quiet and beautiful location; ideal for a couple.
Friendly, helpful owners ensure a great stay.
We spent a very relaxing long weekend at Upper Crumble Cottage. What a lovely place. Stylish, beautifully thought through, comfortable and relaxing. Friendly and helpful owners,Sarah and Stewart have created a haven of tranquillity just outside the village of Cartmel in the Southern Lakes. Eating in or out is easy as there is a good choice of eateries within walking distance and Cartmel's position in the South of the Lake Dstrict makes it easy to explore the region. We will be back!
So glad we found Crumble cottage! We had the most wonderful little holiday. The cottage itself is beautiful and so comfortable - the weather we got was fantastic so we were glad of the patio area at the front available to guests, but the cottage would also be perfectly cosy for a cold wintry stay too! Sarah and Stewart were really kind hosts -
friendly and helpful. The surrounding area is idyllic - lovely for walks, Cartmel is ideal for coffee or meals out (we enjoyed the beer garden by the river at the back of the Royal Oak), and we found it to be a good spot from which to explore the Lake District a little. Such a tranquil setting for a refreshing break away from the busyness of the everyday! Can't fault anything about this cottage - we loved it! Thank you Stewart and Sarah.
Such an amazing retreat from hectic lives. The restoration of this building is incredible and the setting is perfect. The facilities and accommodation are only enhanced by the hospitality of Sarah and Stewart. I would certainly recommend a break here and Warren and I will definitely be returning. Thank you for a very special weekend!
Perfect location for a peaceful holiday, to visit West Coast and the Southern Lakes. The cottage has been built by Stewart and Sarah to the highest standards and quality. It is equipped with everything you would need on a short break holiday, even a wood burning fire. It was wonderful to be woken each morning by the "Morning Bird Chorus". We visited many places-- Coniston,Grange-over-Sands and the brilliant steam railway at Ravenglass which runs to Eskdale.
Cartmel is great for restuarants and would highly recommend The Cavendish Arms.
Thank you to Sarah and Stewart, perfect hosts, looking forward to another visit soon.--- Ian and Janet.
