Hugh has his own Property Business and loves Running and Gardening, Kathryn splits her time between family and a Consultancy business and loves books and walking Goose on the beach.

Kathryn Watson purchased this house in 2007

Why Kathryn Watson chose Northumberland National Park & Country

After searching for 2 years in the Scottish Borders and North Northumberland we found Kilham House. We both loved that it was a large generous house where lots of friends and family could come and stay. The West Wing of the House was large enough to accommodate a holiday let which was in striking distance of Edinburgh and Newcastle, within 30 minutes of fantastic coastline and charming market towns like Kelso, Alnwick, Berwick on Tweed and Wooler as well as being in The Northumberland National Park. The location provides peace and access to miles of hills and lanes to explore on bicycles or under your own steam. There is no light pollution here at all so you can see incredible skies at night too.

What makes this house unique

The West Wing has the benefit of real time up to date information about local events and attractions because the owners are available if required.

Guestbook comments from the owner

"So pleased to have finally made it to Kilham and enjoy the peaceful retreat in such comfortable and beautiful surroundings. The West Wing is very spacious with great views, cosy fire and lovely paintings for inspiration. Could do with another week to see more of the coast and countryside. Thank you for all the lovely treats, flowers and logs and all the rest...."

"We've had a fantastic time, thank you! Love the huge bath and bed. Welcoming and peaceful, we'll be back if we can get in."

"We have had a lovely week. We have visited Floors Castle, St. Abbs nature reserve (a must for a visit) and Flodden Field. The children did a beach ride off Holy Island - Fantastic! The West Wing at Kilham is lovely with breathtaking views from every window."

A very spacious, well-equipped apartment in a beautiful house

  • 5 of 5

We rented the apartment at Kilham House in mid summer with another family (4 adults, 3 young adults) and had a fabulous week. Huge elegant bedrooms, plenty of excellent bathrooms and a big convivial sitting room with a log burner made it an instant hit with everybody before we'd even explored the very pretty grounds.

We had great weather and made the most of the terrace views, dining out by the firepit and stargazing. Far away from big cities on the edge of the national park, the skies over Kilham were some of the darkest and clearest we'd ever seen in Britain. The apartment is extremely well-equipped to a very high standard with lots of kitchen equipment and, handily for the keen cooks amongst us, plenty of fridge space.

Kilham House sits in lovely, secluded hill country about half an hour's drive from Berwick-on-Tweed and a wonderful stretch of castle-dotted coast. A great area for walkers, artists, photographers, historians, wild swimmers and birders, the roads round there are exceptionally quiet even in mid August which makes exploring by car and nipping across the border to Scotland a breeze.

Our hosts were delightful - they made sure we had everything we could possibly need, urged us to enjoy the grounds, tipped us off about all the best places to swim, showed us where to find the log pile and left us to enjoy ourselves. Perfect. We're already hoping to rent Kilham again.

Very spacious and comfortable accommodation

  • 5 of 5

Kilham House was an ideal property for our party of 6 adults and 4 children. There was plenty of space for us all. We enjoyed lots of days out. The coast around Bamburgh is lovely and the castle well worth a visit. The boat trip to the Farnes can also be recommended. A day is hardly long enough to see all the attractions at Alnwick. The children also enjoyed the railway at Etal and the country park at Coldstream (Hirsel) with its craft workshops. A week is not really long enough to see all the area has to offer.

Family get together

  • 5 of 5

The simplest way to start is by saying - what a property!

From the moment you pull up the drive to the time you leave, it never fails to impress. The sweeping views of hills and dales and the gentle bleating of sheep accompanied by the gentle bird song, it is a brilliant place to relax and recharge.

The location is certainly an advantage to explore the area that it is in, centrally located to Coldstream, Kelso, Bamburgh/Holy Island and Alnwick - all are with 20-40 mins drive. So if it is countryside, beaches or castles everything is on your doorstep.

Hugh and Kathryn were great. On hand for any problems, but in the background to let you get on with things. We had some great advice on walking the dogs away from the main tourist areas for a peaceful walk out if needed. The house is full of useful info and O/S maps to help you enjoy your stay. It is beautifully equipped and had enough crockery etc to cater for the largest party (15 for some meals). The younger members of our party were able to enjoy the large gardens and swings without having to worry about where they were.

The room arrangements worked really well, we had it set up as 4 doubles and a twin, everyone had enough room as the rooms are all large, bright and spacious with some extremely comfortable beds and along with the showers, a couple of baths and 4 toilets, no one was waiting long for facilities.

The lounge also seemed Tardis like with some comfortable sofa's, armchairs and floor cushions around a large coffee table giving us some great evenings playing cards and games with all members of the family.

The property also caters for our 4 legged friends, we had 2 dogs with us who slept in the utility room downstairs which was definitely wet dog friendly.

In summary, it is a very beautiful and versatile property that lives up to all expectations and for the larger parties, it has the facilities and equipment to cope with ease. A highly recommended property.

Wonderful Home from Home

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in this lovely 2-floor apartment - one wing oh a huge and wonderful house- overlooking a beautiful garden and fields beyond in the middle of the Northumberland countryide. All the rooms are spacious and furnished with great taste. The apartment is very private and feels more like a whole house. The owners are delightful and left a welcome basket of delicious staples for us. They were on hand to help if asked but otherwise left us to ourselves. it was very much our home for the weekend. A real treat: highly recommended.

Great space, plenty of loos and baths, good location, good lounge and Sky TV

  • 4 of 5

We had terrible weather but managed two fry walks along the coast at St Abbs and from Beadnell down to Embleton. Walk along Tweed to Roxburgh would have been good apart from rain. Walks from Kirk Yetholm also aborted. Pub at Milfield excellent first night.. depends on duty chef and waitress! Drive through Etal to A1 much easier than to SE coast.

A lovely peaceful week at Kilham House

  • 5 of 5

Kilham House is very spacious and comfortable. The rooms are well thought out with nice little touches. We would definely go back there again.

We had a lovely, peaceful week with a variety of interesting local walks and forays to the coast. A beautiful location in which to relax and catch up with friends.

We enjoyed it enormously. Thank you, Hugh and Kathryn for making it all so easy.
