Just 20 minutes away there is the spectacular Northumberland Heritage Coastline where guests can learn to kite-surf or enjoy virtually empty long sandy beaches all year around. Boat trips to the Farne Islands, home to colonies of Puffins and Grey Seals operate regularly from Seahouses. The Grace Darling Museum at Bamburgh is worth a visit too. There is there is a delightful miniature railway which runs from Heatherslaw mill to Etal where there is the Etal castle ruin to explore and the Black Bull pub for a drink or even a cream tea in the Etal post office Tea room! At Cornhill there is an excellent local shop and the Collingwood Arms offers local hospitality in the bar and restaurant. Wooler is 10 minutes to the south, a charming old world town with antique shops and 2 local butchers. To the north over the river Tweed lies the historic town of Coldstream in Scotland home to the Hirsel Golf club. Guests at the West Wing have a choice of golf clubs in the area including the Roxburgh. There is plenty of private parking space for guests cars.

About Kathryn Watson

Hugh and Kathryn have really enjoyed welcoming guests to the West Wing at Kilham House for nearly 5 years, they have 3 teenage children, 4 chickens, 2 guinea pigs and a spaniel called Goose! Hugh has his own Property Business and loves Running and Gardening, Kathryn splits her time between family and a Consultancy business and loves books and walking Goose on the beach.

Why Kathryn Watson chose Northumberland

After searching for 2 years in the Scottish Borders and North Northumberland we found Kilham House. We both loved that it was a large generous house where lots of friends and family could come and stay. The West Wing of the House was large enough to accommodate a holiday let which was in striking distance of Edinburgh and Newcastle, within 30 minutes of fantastic coastline and charming market towns like Kelso, Alnwick, Berwick on Tweed and Wooler as well as being in The Northumberland National Park. The location provides peace and access to miles of hills and lanes to explore on bicycles or under your own steam. There is no light pollution here at all so you can see incredible skies at night too.

What makes this house unique

The West Wing has the benefit of real time up to date information about local events and attractions because the owners are available if required.

Guestbook comments from the owner

"So pleased to have finally made it to Kilham and enjoy the peaceful retreat in such comfortable and beautiful surroundings. The West Wing is very spacious with great views, cosy fire and lovely paintings for inspiration. Could do with another week to see more of the coast and countryside. Thank you for all the lovely treats, flowers and logs and all the rest...."

"We've had a fantastic time, thank you! Love the huge bath and bed. Welcoming and peaceful, we'll be back if we can get in."

"We have had a lovely week. We have visited Floors Castle, St. Abbs nature reserve (a must for a visit) and Flodden Field. The children did a beach ride off Holy Island - Fantastic! The West Wing at Kilham is lovely with breathtaking views from every window."

The ideal house for a family holiday.

  • 5 of 5

We were a party of 10 adults and 4 babies getting together to relax and to celebrate 'en famille' several wedding anniversaries. We all love Northumberland and the West Wing was the ideal house for us being within easy access of a wide range of castles, beaches, interesting towns and N.T. properties. The rooms are very spacious , beautifully furnished and comfortable. The house is welcoming and has a friendly, family atmosphere. We all thoroughly enjoyed our stay ( 4 generations ranging from 8 months old to 91 years !!) and we would definitely recommend Kilham house . An excellent holiday !

A wonderful property for a larger group

  • 5 of 5

Nine of us, across three generations, stayed in Kilham House. It was a wonderful stay.

The bedrooms are comfortably and most tastefully furnished, with good proportions. The quality of the beds and bedding was stand-out. We all slept very well.

Kathryn and Hugh are very hospitable, sharing their home, wider (and beautiful) expanse of garden - complete with trampoline and tire swings for the kids - and knowledge of the area. They have also provided a games room with table tennis and pool, which was a big hit.

It's a lovely area with plenty to see and do within a short drive. If you don't fancy driving there are some lovely walks in the immediate vicinity.

We'd definitely recommend this area and - more importantly - the hospitality and attention to detail of the Watsons. It was a pleasure to stay here.

  • 4 of 5

Hugh and Kathyrn have created a very warm and inviting atmosphere at the Estate House. I would thoroughly recommend this to any friends or family or would like to sample the delights of the Border Country whilst staying in warm and comfortable surroundings. The property was well maintained and clean. Hugh and Kathryn have extensive knowledge of the local calendar and events of interest. We would definitely stay again. Catherine R.

Excellent Place..A real Gem !

  • 5 of 5

I had a few days booked on the river Tweed to Fish, and we stayed here. I really loved this house. It was perfect. It is situated 7 miles south of Cornhill- on Tweed, and its set in a beautiful rural setting with hills on one side, and fields on the other. Hugh and Kathryn are charming, and made us all feel very welcome..I will be back next year...I have stayed at other places in the area before. This was by far the best...
