We fell in love with this hamlet and its friendly locals on a European getaway, so decided to invest in our own French-based cottage.
What makes this house unique
This charming region in the Dordogne offers an escape from the humdrum of city life. A fabulous locale for history buffs, with many Bastide towns. Those who love the outdoors will relish the chance to walk and bicycle in the area. Water sports are available, such as water-skiing and canoeing at Tremolat, a mere four kilometers down the road. Foodies will enjoy dining at the one-Michelin-star eatery, Le Vieux Logie, in Tremolat. Close to Sarlat, Les Eyzies (museum of prehistoric man) and Le Bugue.

Lovely quiet location and nice property
We stayed here for 2 weeks in August 2016. The weather was lovely and the location quiet and great for a relaxing holiday. The house has everything you could need. The nearest village Mauzac is just about within walking distance and has a couple of restaurants and a small shop to buy croissants, milk and bread but you need to be there early as things run out quickly. The area is very pretty. We drove to Lalinde several times which is about 10-15 mins drive away where there is a supermarket plus many places to eat in a typical scenic French town. We also drove to Tremolat which is a beautiful small French village with a handful of restaurants. The local property manager Jon was very helpful when we asked a couple of questions. Thanks to Liz for the use of your house.
We stayed at La Bergerie last month and it was definitely a big highlight of our trip.
The house was beautiful, roomy and homely and the backyard was amazing. Each day we would eat breakfast in the back patio overlooking the pretty green gardens. The kids would play with the new sports equipment or explore the large yard. We would then generally visit a nearby village (of which there were many cute ones to see) or a great castle and come home for an afternoon swim, glass of wine, and cheese.
I was concerned whether the pool would have been too cold coming from Queensland Australia but we were blessed with great weather and swam every day. Our kids are good swimmers but the pool alarm means you also don't need to worry about having no pool fence.
Our kids are 4 and 5 and the house was perfect for our family.
Nearby places we enjoyed are:
- villages of Limeul, Sarlat, and Monpazier
- La Banana restaurant (Mauzac) and Nulle Part Pizzeria (Tremolat)
- Beynac castle (fantastic!)
- Marquessyac gardens
- la Burge farm / historical village
We intended on canoeing down the beautiful dordogne river however the minimum age seemed to be 5-7.
Thank you Liz for such a great place to stay. We loved it.
Wonderful holiday, perfect comfort
This was the second time we'd been to La Bergerie, and each time we have found it to be the perfect combination of relaxation and activities. The house is located in wonderful countryside - you can walk out straight from the back garden - but is close enough to several towns that you can always pop out for supplies, dinner or a drink. The region is fantastic: beautiful, sunny, and with lots to do and historic towns to visit. We had a great time exploring, though often found ourselves spending days just at the house. The rooms are really spacious and well-appointed; you feel like you're staying in a real home rather than a holiday let. There is a lot of communal space as well, with a big garden, terrace and pool to keep kids entertained, and you can oversee it all from the sun loungers on the terrace. We had no need to contact the owners after arrival, though there were comprehensive instructions and guides to the local area left at the house. It was all spotless. We would go again (we did)!
Delightful Dordogne Sojourn
We have visited La Bergerie twice now as no trip to Europe is complete for the family without a relaxing stay at this delightful villa.
It is close to Bergerac airport where we picked up a hire car and drove for half hour through quaint Lalinde and alongside the Dordogne river.
It is quiet and serene as it nested among trees and laneways yet the beauty of the Dordogne region is easily explored from this wonderful fully equipped villa.
There is a Super Marche at Lalinde for stocking up on groceries once you arrive.
We particularly loved Kayaking from Limeuil along the Dordogne after a lazy lunch at Tremolat. Then it was back for a dip in the pool after our adventure. Other must see local places are Bergerac, Sarlat and all the Chateaus (of which there are many).
Mauzac-et-Grand-Castang is the closest village and it has a wonderful restaurant on the water.
I thoroughly recommend a stay at La Bergerie.
