Luxury Apartment In The Heart Of Ostuni's Mediaeval Historical Centre

Overview

Property

Updated: 03-Nov-2016
Apartment in Ostuni, Brindisi, Puglia, Italy - Ideal Holiday Location Throughout The Year

At the very centre of Ostuni's mediaeval quarter, an apartment of traditional character with all modern amenities; street and sea views; free broadband internet; central heating and air conditioning - the perfect base for holidays in all seasons.

The Centro Storico (historical centre) of Ostuni is known throughout Italy as La Citta Bianca because of its unique whitewashed buildings (a tradition maintained since the 17th century when the lime whitewash helped fend off a plague epidemic) cascading down from the hilltop cathedral in a maze of narrow streets and stairways, most of them car free. Casa Nonna is an apartment of ancient character deep inside the Centro Storico, half way between Piazza della Liberta (Ostuni's main central piazza) and the beautiful cathedral. There are relatively few apartments to rent year round in this special part of the city (a lot of Ostuni accommodation is outside the historic centre, in what is usually referred to as the 18th century quarter; Casa Nonna is right inside the mediaeval core with its unique "Moorish" feel).

The apartment consists of three rooms on the first floor of a building accessed from a narrow street off Via Cattedrale, the Centro Storico's main street and passagiato. It has been restored to a high standard in recent years, with the cream coloured tufa stonework and the domed, star shaped ceilings. A kitchen/dining room (with gas hob, fan assisted electric oven and grill, double sink, fridge, washing machine and table/chairs) has a window overlooking the lively little street. A sitting room (with double sofa bed and television) and the bedroom (large double bed) have windows looking out on lower parts of the old city and across Puglia's coastal olive grove belt to the shimmering Adriatic Sea. The shower room contains a shower, WC and wash basin. A roof terrace with panoramic views out to the sea is reached by a staircase from the sitting room, and is equipped with a table and four chairs as well as two high quality sun loungers/chairs.

The apartment has gas fired central heating, so is extremely cosy in Puglia's cooler months. An air conditioning unit and fan are useful in the height of summer. But the thick stone walls make the apartment cool in summer and warm in winter. Double glazing and specially insulated doors protect the apartment from outside noise, the bedroom and sitting room especially. High speed broadband internet / Wi-Fi access is constantly available for no extra charge for guests who want to keep in touch by internet and email.

The apartment can accommodate two people very comfortably. However, the sofa bed converts quickly into a high quality double bed, so it is possible to accommodate up to four people.

About the Owner

My wife and I recently took a gigantic leap of faith to change our lifestyles and leave the UK to start a new life with our two young children in the south of Italy. We now focus on letting out a fantastic town house in Ostuni centro storico and a luxurious trullo in the countryside just outside the town. As well as trying to farm olives, grapes and a variety of fruits and vegetables (with varying degrees of success!!) on our patch of land in this most beautiful part of the world....

Best location and everything we needed at Casa Nona

  • 5 of 5

Casa Nona was easy to find with Eds excellent directions. It was in a great location, quiet but within easy walking distance to places to eat. Parking outside restricted area easy to find and walk to.

It was clean and had everything you needed and located in a friendly area.

Thanks Ed and Gemma for meeting us there and showing us through.

It was a pleasure staying at Casa Nona

Lovely apartment, great location fabulous views

  • 5 of 5

This cosy apartment was perfect for the two of us. A stones throw from the main square in the historic centre so an easy wander to all restaurants, bars and cafes. It was immaculately clean and tidy, well equipped and comfortable. Great views from the roof terrace as well as from the lounge and bedroom windows, got to watch some impressive thunder storms!! Extremely friendly owners who were helpful throughout the whole enquiry and booking process and when we arrive. We would have no hesitation in going back there again.

Tip - go to cafe Fanelli on the square for your aperitivo - excellent Aperol spritz, one of the cheapest we found and really nice owners and a perfect location for people watching.

Boutique, wonderful location.

  • 4 of 5

Climate was cool and the apartment was cosy and warm with large radiators. The few days of sunshine enabled us to open all windows and experience the light and breeze that Ostuni offers this apartment. Good cooking facilities, well equipped kitchen. The terrace offers unobstructed views to the coast, imagine these are amazing in the spring - late summer with a glass of wine and supper alfresco. Plenty of hot water, good water pressure to the apartment. Ed met us on arrival with keys and a complimentary bottle of local red wine, local aperitif snacks and presecco, a welcome welcome :) Recommend Casa Nonna as a base for this beautiful and undiscovered area of Italy. Experience living in a fortified and historic area of Italian history.

Small but perfectly formed

  • 5 of 5

Beautifully presented apartment perfectly situated for exploring the historic centre of Ostuni.

The vaulted ceilings and stone tiled floors give an historic ambiance, but all the appliances are new and of good quality. The rooftop terrace is perfect for relaxing in the sun, and has a fantastic view over the olive groves to the coast. On a clear day you can see Albania.

With a car, Ostuni is a good base for exploring. Alberobello, Otranto and Lecce, and the Grottos at Castellana are three very worthwhile day trips.

The owners have obviously put a lot of thought into what is required for a stress free apartment holiday. A bottle of local red (very nice) and a bottle of Prosecco were left for us - and a very handy shopping trolley to facilitate replenishment.

Thanks Ed and Gemma. Your local knowledge and obvious enthusiasm for the region, combined with your excellent communication contributed hugely to a very enjoyable stay.

Perfect accommodation in the heart of Ostuni

  • 5 of 5

Tucked away among the winding lanes of Ostuni's Centro Storico is Casa Nonna, a quirky little apartment with outstanding views over olive groves to the Adriatic sea. Owners Ed & Gemma kindly met us at the apartment at a time to suit us and had previously provided good directions to help us find the property. They had thoughtfully provided us with complimentary bottles of water, Presecco and red wine! A nice touch, and a lovely couple.

Casa Nonna was nice and clean on arrival, and contained everything needed for a self-catering apartment. Hot water was plentiful with a good shower; and the largest bath towels I've ever seen! The huge bed was very comfortable and we slept well.

Some steep stairs to access the apartment and up to the roof terrace may be a challenge for the less agile. Wonderful views of the town and countryside from both the lounge window and roof terrace.

Casa Nonna is located within walking distance of many bars, restaurants and shops. Try La Gilda (about a hundred yards away) for tasty panini and a beer, they have a huge range! Pantagruel (as recommended by Ed) is very rustic and serve a good set menu with delicious spit roasted variety of meats. Rifugio dei Templari has a beautiful interior and serve an impressive 8 course antipasti, which meant we were completely stuffed and had no room for our main! Italians eat much later than we would, and so the lanes can be quite noisy late at night, but we found the apartment had good insulating windows and the bedroom was quiet and sleeping was not a problem.

We hired a car and parked just outside the city walls without a problem, or there was a nearby car park which is free before 15 June. Would recommend visits to Alberbello, Matera, Monopoli, Pilone beach and explore the little volcanic inlets with Torre (towers) along the coastline about 8km from Ostuni.

Ostuni is a delightful place to wander through and explore the lanes and if you want a taste of how the locals live, Casa Nonna is the perfect place to stay.

Location

From the Owner

We fell in love with Puglia (and Ostuni in particular) about 6 years ago and have spent pretty much every moment since trying to work through all the hurdles of moving our lives here...2014 is the year we finally did it! The scenery, the food and most importantly the people make this the most magnificent place on earth (in our opinion!!!). We hope you enjoy it as much as we do!
