About the property

Thatched cottage in Kingham in the heart of the Cotswolds

The Corner House was built in 1544 and provides a little slice of history with thoroughly modern facilities. Ideal for couples seeking a romantic hideaway or a small family group, its location is quintessentially English, with two, critically-acclaimed pubs and a well-stocked village shop just a short walk away. Kingham was voted "England's Best Village" by Country Life magazine, and it's not hard to see why. The cottage has central heating, but there's also an open fire for extra cosiness on winter nights. And for those lovely English summer days, there's always a spot of al fresco dining in the garden.

About Jill Johnson

This was our family's weekend retreat until the kids started to stay in London more for parties and sports fixture. So now, as we can't bear to sell it, we rent out. Therefore, it's lot more homely than your average rental property, with quirky little touches here and there. We hope you feel as at home there as we did.

Jill Johnson purchased this cottage in 2005

Why Jill Johnson chose West Oxfordshire

We fell in love with this cottage as soon as we saw it. On the outside, it's the quintessential postcard cottage, on the inside it's got a deceptively large kitchen and living area yet retains a charming cosiness. As for the location, well, it doesn't come any better. It's walking distance to THREE fantastic gastropubs and a well stocked shop for all your needs. There's a fabulous walk to the legendary Daylesford Farm shop across the fields, or easy access by bus or car to several stunning surrounding villages.

What makes this cottage unique

You can feel the history in this place. From the original, tiled kitchen floor, to the original 16th century external door situated under the stairwell, it oozes character. There are several low beams though, so mind your head!

Yet another great visit - we can't stay away!

  • 5 of 5

We have stayed at this beautiful cottage so many times and every time is just as special. It is very well equipped with everything you need and has some fantastic quirky features being a 16th Century cottage. I have two children and they simply adore it as well.

Jill is a wonderful host, she is so attentive and always gets back to emails (mostly instantly!). She will do all she can to make sure your stay is as perfect as you could possibly want it. Thank you Jill for all you do for us.

Long Weekend Stay

  • 4 of 5

Stayed for a long weekend and enjoyed our 3 nights in this charming cottage which has a cosy feel and is beautifully furnished with everything you need.

Jill the owner made us very welcome on arrival and explained all the features of the house.

Kingham is a very nice village but is also close to other places of interest which can be visited within a short car journey.

Homely and characteristic

  • 5 of 5

A big thank you Jill for your hospitality and for allowing us to share your family's gorgeous thatched cottage. You are a very welcoming owner and went beyond your "duty" to ensure that our stay was comfortable. It was lovely to meet you on our arrival.

Corner House is a beautiful thatched cottage with great facilities within a homely, characteristic and historic property. It is situated in a quiet part of the village, easy to park and within easy reach of many places to visit like Bourton-on-the-Water, Stow, Stratford upon Avon and many more.

I wish you many more successful years in renting out your beautiful home, with a view to return in the future.

We made the perfect choice

  • 5 of 5

We made the perfect choice in selecting "The Corner House" for our Cotswold holiday. Neither one of us had been in that region (even though my husband is British) and it is ideal to explore the area. Very central to the Cotswolds, withing 20 minute drive to the loveliest villages you hear and read about. The house is just perfect. It is so inviting and warm, the tendency would be to stay in and not even venture out... The beds are all very comfortable, the bathroom well appointed and big, furnished with the thickest towels I have even experienced. The kitchen has everything you need to prepare the simplest to the most lavish meal. Private outdoor spaces are also lovely, but unfortunately we did not have time to sit outside very much. Too busy visiting. There are 2 upscale pubs, one of which "The Wild Rabbit" is 3 minute walk from the cottage.

Our hostess was most gracious and friendly. We had to call on her for little things that needed to be looked into and she was there with a solution within (what seemed) just moments. We have never experienced such a level of attention in renting a vacation home.

We highly recommend "The Corner House" for a truly memorable, comfortable and pleasurable holiday in the Cotswolds.

Activity and Interests

Nearest Train : Kingham at 2 Miles Car: recommended

Special interest holidays:

The location couldn't be more central for visiting all there is to see in the Cotswolds - Stow-on-the-Wold, Chipping Norton, Moreton-in-Marsh are all nearby, so too are Burford, Chipping Camden and Bourton-on-the-Water. The gleaming spires of Oxford are 20 miles or a short train journey, and Shakespeare's birthplace Stratford-upon-Avon is 25 miles away. Places of interest include Sudeley Castle, Bleinheim Palace, Hidcote Garden, Chastleton House, Batsford Arboretum and Snowshill Manor. For those keen to visit the capital, Kingham has a mainline station from where direct trains take 75 minutes to London Paddington.

Travel:

Kingham has a mainline station and a regular bus service that takes you to and from the village to the station and surrounding towns and villages. If you have a car, you can park right outside the cottage with no restrictions. The SatNav code is OX7 6YH.

Distances:

Churchill 1.5 miles

Chipping Norton 4 miles

Stow on the Wold 5 miles

Woodstock 15 miles

Broadway 17 miles

Oxford 20 miles

London 70 miles

Further Details:

The well stocked village shop is just two minutes walk away and is open from 7am to 7pm Mon-Sat and from 8am to 5pm on Sundays. The same distance is newly opened The Wild Rabbit, owned by Lady Bamford of Daylesford fame, and just a minute or so further along the same road is the Kingham Plough which is running out of wall space for all its food awards. Even the Sunday Times' notoriously fickle AA Gill described it as "the pub food you've always dreamt of." And if you fancy a slightly longer, ten minute walk, there's The Mill House on the edge of the village too. The details of all of these are in the cottage manual located in the kitchen.
