Grade 2 Listed 16th Century Thatched Cottage

Overview

Property

Updated: 27-Nov-2016
Thatched cottage in Kingham in the heart of the Cotswolds

The Corner House was built in 1544 and provides a little slice of history with thoroughly modern facilities. Ideal for couples seeking a romantic hideaway or a small family group, its location is quintessentially English, with two, critically-acclaimed pubs and a well-stocked village shop just a short walk away. Kingham was voted "England's Best Village" by Country Life magazine, and it's not hard to see why. The cottage has central heating, but there's also an open fire for extra cosiness on winter nights. And for those lovely English summer days, there's always a spot of al fresco dining in the garden.

About the Owner

This was our family's weekend retreat until the kids started to stay in London more for parties and sports fixture. So now, as we can't bear to sell it, we rent out. Therefore, it's lot more homely than your average rental property, with quirky little touches here and there. We hope you feel as at home there as we did.

Homely and characteristic

  • 5 of 5

A big thank you Jill for your hospitality and for allowing us to share your family's gorgeous thatched cottage. You are a very welcoming owner and went beyond your "duty" to ensure that our stay was comfortable. It was lovely to meet you on our arrival.

Corner House is a beautiful thatched cottage with great facilities within a homely, characteristic and historic property. It is situated in a quiet part of the village, easy to park and within easy reach of many places to visit like Bourton-on-the-Water, Stow, Stratford upon Avon and many more.

I wish you many more successful years in renting out your beautiful home, with a view to return in the future.

We made the perfect choice

  • 5 of 5

We made the perfect choice in selecting "The Corner House" for our Cotswold holiday. Neither one of us had been in that region (even though my husband is British) and it is ideal to explore the area. Very central to the Cotswolds, withing 20 minute drive to the loveliest villages you hear and read about. The house is just perfect. It is so inviting and warm, the tendency would be to stay in and not even venture out... The beds are all very comfortable, the bathroom well appointed and big, furnished with the thickest towels I have even experienced. The kitchen has everything you need to prepare the simplest to the most lavish meal. Private outdoor spaces are also lovely, but unfortunately we did not have time to sit outside very much. Too busy visiting. There are 2 upscale pubs, one of which "The Wild Rabbit" is 3 minute walk from the cottage.

Our hostess was most gracious and friendly. We had to call on her for little things that needed to be looked into and she was there with a solution within (what seemed) just moments. We have never experienced such a level of attention in renting a vacation home.

We highly recommend "The Corner House" for a truly memorable, comfortable and pleasurable holiday in the Cotswolds.

Perfect stay at the peaceful Corner Cottage

  • 5 of 5

The Corner Cottage is a great mix between authentic rustic country cottage and modern conveniences. The proximity to historical landmarks, shopping, good meals, and just simple walks amongst the farms makes this location great for getting a taste of the Cotswolds life.

The cottage was presented to us in absolutely top notch cleanliness upon arrival, and the appliances that we did use for our one eat-in meal worked fine. The host was easy to contact and met us at our arrival to explain a few particulars about the cottage and its contents; in addition, the host has many documents / manuals organized that outline functions of different appliances, etc. As it is summer, we didn't have much concern about heating the cottage, and it did not heat up to be uncomfortably warm. The beds were cozy both our kids and us had no trouble sleeping each night. The bathroom has been well outfitted, but the old-style bathtub / shower combo takes getting used to. The hot water was quite hot, and the water pressure was acceptable. The cottage can creak a bit when going upstairs, but that should be expected for this age of accommodation - it is part of the rustic charm.

Overall, we had a restful stay and it was a pleasure to come back to the cottage after each of our touring days was over. We look forward to another opportunity to stay in the Kingham Corner Cottage in the future! (But for longer next time)

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for your glowing review. It is always nice to know what our guests think. With regard to the temperature of the water it is possible that 3 or 4 people take a shower/bath one after the other, the tank does not have time to reheat the water. Unfortunately there is no room under the thatch for a bigger water tank. I am very pleased on the whole that you really enjoyed yourselves. Would love to see you back, do contact me in the future if you want to spend a longer holiday. It was a pleasure to meet you.

A perfect holiday

  • 5 of 5

We booked the cottage because it looked incredibly appealing on the website. The reality far surpassed our expectations.

What first strikes you about the place is its warm, welcoming atmosphere. Jill, who greeted us when we arrived, made us feel right at home.

The furnishings very elegantly match the long history of the cottage. The whole house shows incomparable style – classic, yet cosy. The kitchen area is amazingly well equipped (and lit), and we enjoyed our meals at the banquet-style (!) long solid wood table. The living room is spacious and very tastefully decorated, ideal for relaxing and losing yourself in a good book.

The surrounding area is a treasure trove of delightful discoveries: the long, exciting walks in the tranquil countryside, the visits to the beautiful, quaint villages nearby – each with its own distinctive character – Daylesford farm for organic produce, all the posh pubs … the list is endless. We were constantly drunk on the beauty of the place!

The amazing thing about the place is that we never felt that we were renting, but that we had just happened to go to our own holiday home! Thank you Jill for this unique, unforgettable experience! We hope to be back soon!

Stunning Quintessential English cottage set in sleepy village .

  • 5 of 5

What can I say about this superb cottage in a short review ! It's fab ! The warmest of welcomes from owner Jill. Delightful thatched cottage with abundant charm set in a sleepy village green with excellent pub restruants and shop stroll through village . This stunning cottage has a sweet cottage front garden to enjoy the early morning sun with a bonus of a small courtyard garden to rear catching evening sunsets. A third formal but pretty private walled garden opposite the entrance with a large entertaining table and chairs surounded by scented roses , honeysuckle and mature planting . Upon entering the cottage you are greeted with a stunning spacious cottage kitchen and superb living area with large inglenock fireplace and sumptuous comfy sofas along with pretty window seats a relaxing room to enjoy . The bedrooms are all very sweet and the blue room is a romantic room for couples with views of the formall garden and thatched cottage. The bright airy bathroom also I keeping with the age of the property with its painted floorboards and quirky angles . The interior quirks are charming with the original 16 centuary Doorway hidden under the staircase. The cottage is well equipped and has sumptuous soft furnishings so draw the door drapes light the fireplace candles provided and enjoy the livingroom by candlelight with its beams and flagstone floors . Good location for visiting Cotswolds attractions . Do visit one of the village Fetes they are a delightful old fashioned country entertainment at its best and great for all ages long may they continue . So that's it folks hope my review inspired you to enjoy this beautiful cottage and charismatic owner set in a delightful village .

Very pleasant break

  • 5 of 5

The cottage was very clean and well-appointed, with more furniture and crockery than we could use in a week. Unusually for a holiday cottage, there was plenty of space to put things down in the bathroom and plenty of pegs.

The location is good too, and the Friday morning social in Bledington village hall, close by, made for an interesting variation on going out for coffee.

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for your very kind words regarding Corner House KINGHAM. It is appreciated that you took the time to tell us about your stay. You would be amazed how much cutlery and crockery people manage to use in a short time! Also it used to be a family home and there are two bedrooms locked up for private use. Thank you for respecting the house and leaving it so tidy, you would be very welcome again. Regards Jill

Location

From the Owner

We fell in love with this cottage as soon as we saw it. On the outside, it's the quintessential postcard cottage, on the inside it's got a deceptively large kitchen and living area yet retains a charming cosiness. As for the location, well, it doesn't come any better. It's walking distance to THREE fantastic gastropubs and a well stocked shop for all your needs. There's a fabulous walk to the legendary Daylesford Farm shop across the fields, or easy access by bus or car to several stunning surrounding villages.

Activity and Interests

Nearest Train : Kingham at 2 Miles Car: recommended

Special interest holidays:

The location couldn't be more central for visiting all there is to see in the Cotswolds - Stow-on-the-Wold, Chipping Norton, Moreton-in-Marsh are all nearby, so too are Burford, Chipping Camden and Bourton-on-the-Water. The gleaming spires of Oxford are 20 miles or a short train journey, and Shakespeare's birthplace Stratford-upon-Avon is 25 miles away. Places of interest include Sudeley Castle, Bleinheim Palace, Hidcote Garden, Chastleton House, Batsford Arboretum and Snowshill Manor. For those keen to visit the capital, Kingham has a mainline station from where direct trains take 75 minutes to London Paddington.

Travel:

Kingham has a mainline station and a regular bus service that takes you to and from the village to the station and surrounding towns and villages. If you have a car, you can park right outside the cottage with no restrictions. The SatNav code is OX7 6YH.

Distances:

Churchill 1.5 miles

Chipping Norton 4 miles

Stow on the Wold 5 miles

Woodstock 15 miles

Broadway 17 miles

Oxford 20 miles

London 70 miles

Further Details:

The well stocked village shop is just two minutes walk away and is open from 7am to 7pm Mon-Sat and from 8am to 5pm on Sundays. The same distance is newly opened The Wild Rabbit, owned by Lady Bamford of Daylesford fame, and just a minute or so further along the same road is the Kingham Plough which is running out of wall space for all its food awards. Even the Sunday Times' notoriously fickle AA Gill described it as "the pub food you've always dreamt of." And if you fancy a slightly longer, ten minute walk, there's The Mill House on the edge of the village too. The details of all of these are in the cottage manual located in the kitchen.
