Overview

About the property

Thatched cottage in Kingham in the heart of the Cotswolds

The Corner House was built in 1544 and provides a little slice of history with thoroughly modern facilities. Ideal for couples seeking a romantic hideaway or a small family group, its location is quintessentially English, with two, critically-acclaimed pubs and a well-stocked village shop just a short walk away. Kingham was voted "England's Best Village" by Country Life magazine, and it's not hard to see why. The cottage has central heating, but there's also an open fire for extra cosiness on winter nights. And for those lovely English summer days, there's always a spot of al fresco dining in the garden.

About Jill Johnson

This was our family's weekend retreat until the kids started to stay in London more for parties and sports fixture. So now, as we can't bear to sell it, we rent out. Therefore, it's lot more homely than your average rental property, with quirky little touches here and there. We hope you feel as at home there as we did.

Jill Johnson purchased this cottage in 2005

Why Jill Johnson chose West Oxfordshire

We fell in love with this cottage as soon as we saw it. On the outside, it's the quintessential postcard cottage, on the inside it's got a deceptively large kitchen and living area yet retains a charming cosiness. As for the location, well, it doesn't come any better. It's walking distance to THREE fantastic gastropubs and a well stocked shop for all your needs. There's a fabulous walk to the legendary Daylesford Farm shop across the fields, or easy access by car to several stunning surrounding villages.

What makes this cottage unique

You can feel the history in this place. From the original, tiled kitchen floor, to the original 16th century external door situated under the stairwell, it oozes character. There are several low beams though, so mind your head!

Yet another great visit - we can't stay away!

  • 5 of 5

We have stayed at this beautiful cottage so many times and every time is just as special. It is very well equipped with everything you need and has some fantastic quirky features being a 16th Century cottage. I have two children and they simply adore it as well.

Jill is a wonderful host, she is so attentive and always gets back to emails (mostly instantly!). She will do all she can to make sure your stay is as perfect as you could possibly want it. Thank you Jill for all you do for us.

Absolutely lovely cottage

  • 5 of 5

We very much enjoyed our stay in Kingham. The cottage itself is lovely, clean, spacious (even for 5 people), and well equipped. Jill is a great host - very hospitable and helpful. Needless to say, the Kingham area is great, too. Much to explore! We would definitely stay here again

Picture book cottage in the cotswolds

  • 5 of 5

A wonderful cottage in a fantastic location to explore the Cotswalds from. We were greeted with a lovely welcome pack and tour of the property by the owner. All slept well in the comfortable and spotless bedrooms enjoying the peace and quiet of being in the country.

The well equipped kitchen came in useful for those occasions when we did not want to eat out and we were lucky enough enough to be able to sit out in the beautiful garden because the weather played ball for a change! Our only minor quibble was that you couldn't stand up to have a shower because of the layout of the bathroom. This was more than made up for by the charm and character of the building though. Thoroughly recommended.

Owner's Response: Hi Maria, Thank you so much for your kind review of Corner House Kingham. I am so pleased you enjoyed your visit. I am sorry if you were misled by the description of the bath and shower attachment, it is not designed to stand up in as there is no shower curtain and the room cannot be designed to put a proper shower in because of the sloping roof. I hope this didn't cause too many problems. You are welcome any time. Will look forward to seeing you again. Kind regards, Jill

Dream Cottage!

  • 5 of 5

I visit the UK once or twice a year and normally stay at B & B's. I thought I'd try something different this time by staying in a home. And this way my dream home! A sweet, quaint thatched cottage!!

It was everything I had dreamed of! It was darling and I actually had to talk myself into leaving every morning...I wanted to stay there by the cozy fireplace with a cup of tea and just chill!!

But I didn't....there was just so much to see and do in the area. The cottage is right in the heart of the Cotswolds and everyday we did something different. We toured Hidcote Gardens, we went to Blenheim Palace, we took a tour of HRH Prince Charles garden at Highgrove and we spent countless hours driving down country lanes to visit ancient villages.

Our little thatched home was perfect in every respect. It had a full kitchen with everything you'd need to make a full meal. The main sitting room had a huge fireplace that we lit every night. (We collected twigs and sticks along the roads, no wood was provided) The upstairs had 2 nice bedrooms with very comfortable beds (new pillows are needed) and the furnishings were very nice. The bathroom was quite large and had a large tub with a hand held shower.

My friend and I were very happy staying here and would love to go back again one day. There were 2 or 3 restaurants in town, but we ate at local pubs in surrounding towns before we came home. Next time we'd definitely try out one right in Kingham!

Further Details:

The well stocked village shop is just two minutes walk away and is open from 7am to 7pm Mon-Sat and from 8am to 5pm on Sundays. The same distance is newly opened The Wild Rabbit, owned by Lady Bamford of Daylesford fame, and just a minute or so further along the same road is the Kingham Plough which is running out of wall space for all its food awards. Even the Sunday Times' notoriously fickle AA Gill described it as "the pub food you've always dreamt of." And if you fancy a slightly longer, ten minute walk, there's The Mill House on the edge of the village too. The details of all of these are in the cottage manual located in the kitchen.
