About the property

Farmhouse in Beaugas, Villeneuve-sur-Lot, Lot et Garonne, Aquitaine / Dordogne, France

'Bellevue' is a beautiful and recently completely restored classic French 16th century farmhouse, with lots of character and original features. There are large, exposed beams and a stone sink in the entrance hall as well an original classic French fireplace in the kitchen and in the Master bedroom. There are lovely French windows which provide panoramic views from all around. Behind the house, on a hilltop, sits an old windmill which can be reached on foot. In the springtime, the orchards are filled with blossom and there are lots of wild flowers, including wild orchids. There is plenty of wildlife to observe and enjoy. The area is peaceful and quiet and secluded. There is a 2.5 acre garden which surrounds the gite. There are 2 terraces- one with a wisteria growing over the top and the other one is totally private, enjoying panoramic views of the countryside. There are wonderful sunsets from this terrace. The swimming pool is a salt water pool (10m x5m). There are 3 steps at the shallow end. The pool gently slopes down to 2 meters deep at the deep end. There is an electric pool cover for security and there are plenty of pool toys for children to play with. There is a large terrace that wraps around half of the pool and there are plenty of sun loungers available. There is also a majestic lime tree with tree swing -providing extra shade around the terrace area. There is a small-terraced barbecue area. There is a vegetable garden and fruit orchard out in the back part of the garden- which provides plenty of seasonal fruit and vegetables.

About Chris and Liz Collins

France has always had a special place in our hearts for Chris and I. (Liz) We spent every family holiday in different parts of France and I have family roots in France and speak the language. We discussed moving to France together for quite some years and finally, Chris (an ex-electrical engineer) and I (a teacher) decided that if we didn't make the move now, we never would. Chris had had enough of working long hours and travelling long distances every day and for me moving to France seemed like moving home from home. We particularly wanted to bring up our 9 year old daughter in France, where she could live a more carefree life with a big garden to run around in. We also wanted to spend more time together as a family and so began our new change of life in France.

Why Chris and Liz Collins chose Lot-et-Garonne

We knew many different regions in France but we wanted to live in the south-west of France. We came to the Aquitaine region because it is such a sunny and warm region for most of the year. We loved the countryside and it is often referred to as the 'Tuscany of France' with its rolling hills, dotted with cypress trees. The climate is so warm here that you can even grow melons and peaches. It is a peaceful and quiet place where we completely relax. We love walking and you can walk along country lanes and be rarely disturbed by any traffic or you can walk straight into the countryside and admire the vast, open views. Although we live in the countryside, we are not at all remote. The village is a stones throw away and the nearest town is 5 minutes away. We are also very close to the Dordogne border and pretty towns such as Bergerac and Perigueux are well worth visiting. There are plenty of caves and castles to visit and plenty of meandering rivers to canoe down.

What makes this farmhouse unique

Our house is up a quiet lane and there are a few houses dotted around. We are also surrounded by orchards, and in the springtime, the whole area is covered in snow-white blossom. The meadows are abundant with wild flowers and many types of orchids and in the summertime, the sky at night is a wonder to behold, with even shooting stars to be seen. Our place is ideally positioned as we are only half an hour away from Bergerac airport so flights to and from the UK are easy to arrive. Agen, the regions' capital is 50 minutes and there is a TGV that runs to Paris. The motorway link (A62) is 50 minutes away. From here you can head to Bordeaux and Toulouse and even to the Pyrenees. We are 1 hour away from Perigueux(A89/A20. Spain and the Pyrenees is a 4 hour drive away.

Paradise on earth

  • 5 of 5

This was an excellent place to relax in rural France at its very best. The house was extremely comfortable and immaculately clean. The view was to die for.......and we all enjoyed spending lots of time at the property and enjoying the facilities - a beautiful swimming pool; table tennis; and a delightful garden. Lots of interesting places to visit nearby but not at all touristy. Chris and Liz Collins and their daughter Olivia were friendly, always helpful yet never intrusive. All in all one of the best holidays we've ever had. Really sad when three weeks 'away from it all' ended.

Beautiful property and setting

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at Bellevue for 2 weeks in September. What a lovely property, area and setting.

We have visited France for many years and this is one of the best properties we have stayed in. The weather was such that the pool area got a far greater level of use than would normally be the case for us and it was superb.

The view from the pool area and the shaded eating area at the front of the property is idyllic, even my cooking tasted quite good looking across the fields to the hamlet and church of Beaugas.

The furniture has been very well chosen to be archetypally French rustic in appearance but still highly practical and although not needed by my wife and I, the table tennis, table football and badminton would be great past-times for the more energetic and for children.

Bergerac is about 30 minutes away, Villeneuve-Sur-Lot 20 minutes and Marmande around 45 minutes. You can get all of your basic requirements from Cancon which is a 5 minute drive or a pleasant 45 minute walk and all of the major supermarkets are in those towns mentioned above.

Whilst Chris, Liz and Olivia live in the converted barn across from the house, there is no feeling of being overlooked or impinged on in any way but the upside is that they are readily available if you want suggestions or any help. Chris's advice on the scenic route to Chateau Biron is just one example of local knowledge meaning you get so much more from your visit.

Chateaus Gavaudun and Bonaguil are both very interesting destinations as well as Biron and an hour's drive will get you to the Grottes and Gouffres of the Southern Dordogne.

I would have no second thoughts in recommending Bellevue to holidaymakers from young families to older travellers and we hope to return with our own family.

Our holiday for two weeks at Bellevue was one of the most enjoyable we have had and we are hoping to return again next year. The property, presentation and cleanliness were exceptional thanks to the owners Liz and Chris. Our three young children enjoyed the pool and garden, both of which were immaculately maintained. The views were a joy to wake up to every day.

We were surprised about the number of local activities that kept the children busy, from swimming in the lake near Cancon, to boating on the River Lot. We especially enjoyed eating out at Restaurant Du Lac which proved to be vibrant and popular with the locals.

We would, without hesitation recommend the property to our family and friends. Liz, Chris and Olivia you deserve six stars!

Wonderful and peaceful place to stay

  • 5 of 5

Bellevue is a wonderful place to stay- it is a very tranquil spot with stunning panaromic views of the surrounding countryside and it feels restful from the moment you arrive. The house itself is full of character and very tastefully decorated with lovely outside sitting areas, both in sun and shade. It also has a fab swing, table tennis and table football, much to our children's delight.

The house and grounds are immaculately kept and the pool has great views with really comfortable sun loungers. Chris, Liz and their daughter Olivia made us feel very welcome- they also had lots of great suggestions for local restaurants (we loved the Tete d'Ail in Cancon), night markets (the one in Laparade was really fun), local walks and other excursions. All-in-all we had one of our best French family holidays here. We'd love to come back- and for longer next time! Thanks again for a wonderful stay.

Lovely house in beautiful location

  • 5 of 5

The house and garden were immaculate and tidy. The house had everything we have needed for our stay, including board games! Bathrooms were impressive and kitchen was big enough for all of us to cook a couple of meals in. We were lucky enough to sample some of the vegetables from the garden, which were delicious!

The pool kept us entertained and there were plenty of sun loungers and parasols for those who wanted to take things easy! We got good use out of the table tennis table!!

We found our hosts warm and welcoming and enjoyed spending our last evening with them.

The views were stunning and it was relaxing to sit and take it all in. We were even lucky enough to have a couple of deer wander into the garden.

We would certainly recommend this property and would stay here sgain

Lovely Farmhouse with stunning views

  • 5 of 5

What a beautiful view Vinsou has. We have been to France many times but never had a view like it.The house is a rustic well maintained farmhouse and there is everything you could need for a great holiday.Chris and Liz are gracious hosts and left a welcome pack including wine which was much appreciated. Chris also provided a home grown lettuce and some lovely cherries. It is perfectly placed to visit some fabulous villages Villereal Monpazier and Monflanquin to name only 3. The market in Issigeac on Sundays is a must. Thank you Liz Chris Olivia and Star for making us feel welcome. We hope to return one day.
