Cottage near Challacombe, Nr. Barnstaple, North Devon, England - On Western Edge Of Exmoor National Park, 8 Miles From Coast. Wood-burner And One Dog

This Exmoor Cottage is a traditional farm workers country cottage on the Western edge of the Exmoor National Park with outstanding countryside all around. The changeover day is FRIDAY. We have aimed to make the cottage extremely reasonable value for the country loving holiday maker. It is serviceable clean and well equipped. It is not luxuriously furnished but rather practical and ideal for families, walkers, cyclists, surfers and those loving the outdoors or a quiet retreat (and off peak there is a discount for only two people).

Being surrounded by a large garden with extensive lawns to the rear and pretty enclosed area at the front, there is no need to go anywhere else. But there are so many attractions in every direction. Many visitors have returned over and over again because of its superb position, traditional charm, large and attractive gardens, and the many outstanding attractions and eating places all around. The porch/conservatory provides an ideal setting to enjoy the front garden and nature in any weather. The wood-burner fire completes the cosy atmosphere.

We love Exmoor and with relations here and so many childhood memories we longed to keep the connections. We love the contrasts of the wild moorland; deep wooded valleys and rugged coastline all so close together. The walking is amazing and the villages, pubs and restaurants give so many delightful places to explore and relax.

What makes this cottage unique

This is a traditional Exmoor farm workers cottage and retains its character. The countryside immediately around the garden and farm animals make it a charming retreat. We love the view down the valley with horizons into the distance ... especially lovely at sunset.

Notes on accommodation: The cottage includes free light and heat with night store heaters throughout. The wood burner (September to May) has dry logs provided at £2.50 per large basket. It is a no smoking cottage and we accept one well behaved dog. There are reduced rates for couples in the off-peak season - see our website for details. Outside: There is a large grassed garden to the rear with small stream running through. There are also drives on either side of the property with parking on the lower side ... and an enclosed pretty front garden. There is wooden garden furniture front and back. There are beech trees all around the rear and the fences are generally dog-proof. See our website for many more photos of cottage, gardens and surrounding area. Utility Room: Small outside laundry has dryer and freezer. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Towels and bed linen are included and cottage is cleaned and laundry done before and after each stay. Other: There is a small conservatory porch with folding chairs and coffee table, ideal for enjoying the garden in any weather.

A lovely quiet and comfortable cottage perfect at the end of a day of walking

This cottage suited us perfectly as a base whilst we walked the coast path from Minehead to Westward Ho! It was comfortable and quiet and had all the facilities we needed. A good value retreat in lovely countryside and not far from the coast.

So great we want to stay again

The property was just perfect for us (myself, husband, 2 year old and father-in-law). Made me jealous my house wasn't more like it.

The cottage is surprisingly comfortable

We had a very pleasant stay in the cottage but it was raining a lot so we couldn't enjoy the garden. The cottage offers lots of privacy due to the fact that it is situated on a dead end street. There are lots of things to do and see in the area, also for hiking.

Great base for a week exploring Exmoor

This is a charming cottage quietly situated. It is exactly as described. For our family it was perfect- the young children enjoyed the large, safe garden space, and we did not miss the mod cons and buzz of the modern world. The furniture is rustic but cosy and the cottage was well equipped. Location-wise, we found it perfect for the north western Exmoor sights. From the cottage itself, you can easily walk to the Exmoor zoo, but other than that you probably need to take a short drive, but that's the beauty- you're alone with the farm fields!

We would certainly stay there again- great value!

late summer break at park cottage

we have had a lovely breaj at park cottage with our two westies wholoved the gardens and the log fire .such a cosy retreat to get away from it all ,but within a short drive to many beaches and places of interest we will be back next year

A Homely Retreat

We needed a comfortable stay whilst waiting to move to a new house and we are lucky to have found Park Cottage, which is warm and well equipped for any stay. It is in a beautiful spot very well situated to explore North Devon with it`s many varied landscapes and attractions.

The cottage is 8 miles from an ideal children's beach at Coombe Martin with rock pools and sand. The famous surfing beaches of Woolacombe are some 15 miles away. Coast walks with stunning views are within 8-10 miles as are pretty coves and beaches. Picturesque Lynmouth is just 15 miles. The whole coastline is classed as an area of outstanding natural beauty...and Saunton Sands are a bio-reserve.


The nearest airports are Exeter and Bristol... both some 75 miles away. Having a car is essential for this country retreat on the edge of Exmoor.


Both villages of Challacombe and Bratton Fleming are 5 miles away and both have one village general store. Barnstaple, Ilfracombe and Coombe Martin are all 8-12 miles away with a comprehensive range of shops. The cottage has brochures for all sorts of fine and wet weather attractions all within easy reach, including steam railway, farm cream teas and pony trekking on the moor.

To book we like to follow an exchange of emails with a brief phone conversation to make sure the cottage suits your needs. You then receive a booking form and if accurate, you then send a deposit of 25%. The balance payable 6 weeks before the visit.
NB. there are reduced rates for couples in the off-peak periods that cannot be shown on this Owners Direct pricing table, but are on our website.

Changeover Day:
The normal changeover day if Fridays. You can arrive anytime after 2pm and leave before 10am on day of departure (to give cleaner time). Off peak short stays and long weekends can be arranged.

Notes on prices:
N.B. There are discounts for just two people booking in the off-peak periods. These cannot be shown on Owners Direct listing but are on our website. Sometimes last minute discounts can be negotiated.
