About the property

Cottage in Bream, Forest of Dean, Gloucestershire, England - The Forest Footpath (Gloucestershire Way) Is Only A Couple Of Hundred Metres From Property

Mill Hill Cottage was constructed circa 1850 and was originally built as a forester's cottage being extended in the early 1980's. It sits on a gentle slope and is central to local amenities and a very good local bus route to the nearby market towns of Coleford and Lydney. The cottage is located in Bream, Gloucestershire which is arguably the largest village in England. It is situated in the Forest of Dean which is a former mining area lying between the rivers Wye and Severn. It is known for its free roaming sheep, deer and wild boar.

Location, Location, Location!

  • 4 of 5

We had 3 lovely nights at the cottage and thoroughly enjoyed the garden and the experience of staying in a very old building with beautiful views. The cottage is very well presented and comfortable and provides all the basics you would need for your stay. The location is excellent with many major attractions within a few miles (Clearwell Caves is well worth a visit and is less than 3 miles away), and it's just a short walk to the local shop. The local fish and chip shop is very good, the local pub does not serve food but is very friendly! There are some good alternatives nearby and we would particularly recommend The Royal Oak which is either a long walk or a short drive.

Communication with the owners, Gill and Gordon, was very straight forward and easy, and everything was ready for our arrival, including a thoughtful bottle of milk in the fridge, and we appreciated the collection of leaflets, maps and general info on local attractions.

Overall, good value for money and a very beautiful part of the country which we would certainly visit again to cross some more of the walks off our list.

Ideal for access to the Forest

  • 4 of 5

The cottage is ideally situated at the edge of the forest. We were able to enjoy wonderful walks with our dogs notably at Symonds Yat and the Sculpture Park. The cottage provided plenty of space for our party of 5 adults and is well equipped. The secure garden provides space enough for the dogs to roam and has a picnic table for al-fresco dining. Running late for our arrival time due to traffic, we had to call and cancel our grocery order, however to our delight Gill (owner) had taken delivery on our behalf and even put our frozen and perishable items in the fridge and freezer for us. Great service! Thank you Gill and Gordon we had a lovely time.

Our stay at Millhill cotage

  • 4 of 5

Very spacious, well equipped except no cleaning materials (eg for sink and toilet ) well situated for getting into the forest and sight seeing. We enjoyed our holiday except for the rain but plenty to do

Owner's Response: We are glad you enjoyed your break except for the weather sorry about that. The cleaning materials for sink and toilet we do not leave out incase it gets into the wrong hands such as kids and we are self catering, however we will have a think on what we could leave out in the future that is safe. Thanks

A good property to stay in a peaceful location

  • 4 of 5

Lovely cottage in a beautiful setting. Good correspondence from the owners. Two minor points. It would have been useful to know about the very steep staircase unsuitable for the infirm or very young. The weather was cold and heating only on in winter so we had to buy logs and kindle normally supplied in the winter months. Neither of these points applied the holiday however.

Owner's Response: The information about the cottage doe's inform you that it is not suitable for children between the age of 2 and 10, we are sorry that you did not ask about heating as we could of sorted the problem for you very easily but being August we expected you to be warm enough. We are glad you had a great experience in the Forest and thank you for leaving the cottage clean and tidy. Glad you had a safe journey home and hope to see you again.
