Why Mark Deane chose Pembrokeshire

My family also live just outside the village of St Nicholas, which is quiet and very pretty. We like to walk the coast path, go kayaking, surfing, fishing and hack out on horseback, the Pencaer Peninsular is hallowed ground for that !

The whole place is crisscrossed with foot paths and bridleways through woods, up hills across moors and down to beaches. So much flora, wildlife and beautiful scenery, every season is so different here and brings out amazing variations for you to enjoy.

What makes this house unique

We made the house comfortable but not fussy, it is easy to keep tidy, just the sort of place we would like to stay at with a group of family or friends. Not just tidy, easy to keep clean, practical and comfortable, but also very good value for money.

Roomy property in great location

  • 4 of 5

We had a lovely holiday and generally the house was very clean and well presented. We had a few little problems but they did not spoil our stay.

The kitchen was well equiped but the dishwasher did not work. Eating for 9 of us was cosy, 12 would be tight at the kitchen dining table!

The 3 showers were good but one packed up on Wednesday in the main shower room on the first floor.

The tap in the ensuite WHB was loose. We had 2 elderly people in our party who found access from the drive to the house a bit of a big step.

The Garden was useful and we ate out at the 2 benches provided and the location is grand, with the old church right next door, very atmospheric at half light; and wonderful Pembrokeshire walks abound! The Sloop Inn does lovely food and is in a great location. The beaches are lovely but get there early at the smaller ones in the high season. Overall a happy and memorable holiday.

Owner's Response: Thank you for the review, we do apologise for the diswasher, it has been problematic and although only used for a total of 30 weeks it has been repaired a couple of times will now be replaced. As we were away ourselves during your stay maybe the lady we engaged to show you around missed a couple of points: There is another fold away table with chairs to suppliment the kitchen table and it can be put up in the lobby. The upstairs shower does sometimes get an airlock when the downstairs taps get alot of use at the same time, it just needs to be switched on and off a few times until it works its way out. We will tighten the tap up and will look at making another step down to the patio this winter to aid access. We hope you will stay with us again, best regards, Mark & Cathy

A good house to accommodate 12 people.

  • 4 of 5

We were on Holiday at Ty Newydd from 23rd to 30th July arrived at 12-30 and the owner was there to show us around and advise where the nearest pub was. It's in a small quiet but pretty village called St Nicholas. It suited our family of 10 with each bedroom having 2 single beds. It's simply but adequately furnished. It would suit people who want to escape their mobile phones and Ipads as there was no mobile signal or Wi fi at the house It needs a car for most trips unless you want to walk to the nearest beach which would be difficult for the not so fit or elderly. The garden was mainly lawn and had a good area for children to run around or for outside eating in good weather.

The dishwasher we never mastered and felt it may be needing attention.

We found some other very nice villages with pubs to eat and drink and had several trips to St Davids which was a beautiful City and went to the nearby White Sands Bay several times for surfing and body boarding, it was the favourite beach for the whole family with a shop, restaurant and ice creams as well as good access to the beach from the large car park. It also had lifeguards for safety and was a good bucket and spade beach with lots of lovely sand. We also went to the Old Port in Fishguard a couple of times where the kids loved crabbing.

The coastal path is spectacular along this stretch of Pembrokeshire and perfect for keen walkers.

slightly disappointed

  • 3 of 5

the house is located in a very small village-no shop or pub but we knew that before we went ,to get to the coastal path or a beach you need to drive there especially if you have young children,we were told we could arrive at midday which we did but cleaning was not finished til 3.30 .all the rooms are a good size with comfy beds and excellent showers.there was plenty of crockery etc. for our party of 12 but the dishwasher was broken when we arrived and stayed that way all week-apparently the owner was not prepared to pay the £90 an hour that the local plumber charged.we were also told we could have use of a washing machine but that was not there having been broken by previous visitors so by the end of the week some of the children were wearing pyjama tops for t shirts.there was a washing line we could have used for hand washing or drying beach towels but we were not told about it and discovered it the day we were leaving.the house was quite dusty with cobwebs and spiders-dead and alive-and we found mould on some plates, also there were some nasty stains in the cupboard under the sink.there were books ,dvds, games and a box of buckets and spades etc,for the children which they enjoyed and loads of places to see and things to do-such as trampolining in hangar 5 .after a lovely meal in the cafe at goodwick we walked by the sea and saw a seal following a man swimming.we would not return there but it would be o.k. for adults only or families with older children tho i dont think wifi signal is very good.

Owner's Response: Thank you for the review, please let me clarify a few points though. The nearest beach and the coast path is about a mile away and this is about 20 minute walk, maybe not appropriate for very small children or the elderly. Our check in time is flexible but if we have had guests leaving in the morning on the day you arrive we need 4 hours to turn the house around; there are 12 beds to make, toilets, showers to be cleaned, floors to be mopped, we dust and polish mow the lawn, weed the patio, sort through the recycling, empty bins and make any repairs. You should not expect to be able to check in before 16:00. We do not advertise a washing machine, we may install one in the future if there is a serious demand. There is a service wash in Goodwick that is very convenient and reasonable. As for the dishwasher, we were not unwilling to pay a plumber, he was not available - I came over on three occasions during your stay with a local handyman to try and repair the machine in situ but it needed taking away and as it is a fitted unit we could not realistically do this with you in the house. The machine is now repaired. We investigated the stain inside the cupboard, under the sink, some cleaning fluid had leaked this has been cleared up. The plates it turns out are stoneware and were put away damp by previous guests, that explains the mould, we have now replaced them with regular china. As for spiders it is not unreasonable to expect a few of them to get into the house over the course of a week.

This holiday house was ideal for our family group of 6 adults and 6 children.

  • 4 of 5

We found the house had everything we needed, although the bedrooms were quite basic, eg a mirror in the bedrooms would be good! Also the bedside lights were too dim for reading. It was good to have 3 shower-rooms.

The house was clean and nicely presented, but the garden was a little scruffy and could do with a little attention! However as it was enclosed and private, it was safe for the children and we enjoyed using the barbecue.

When we had a problem with the plumbing the owner responded very quickly and helpful advice was always to hand.

The location was great and we liked being in a quiet and friendly village.

All in all a great holiday...Thank you!

We hope to be back!

Owner's Response: Thank you for the review, we will take on board what you suggest: Some of the bedrooms do have mirrors, but we will put new ones in those that do not. The bedside lights have energy saving bulbs some are brighter than others, but we will replace the ones in the rooms which have the dim bulbs. Although we do mow the lawn before guests arrive and weed the patio at this time of year everything else grows so fast, but we will try to get some pruning done ! You are very welcome to stay with us again, thank you for keeping the house in good order. Best regards, Mark & Cathy

Awesome Christmas away from the City

  • 5 of 5

Very happy with the stay over the Christmas in this property.

The house very spacious, more than enough space for our group of 9.

Mark was very flexible with check-in/out timing, which made our trip relaxed.

We would recommend the place for a countryside retreat. Well worth the trip from London.
