Why Mark Deane chose Pembrokeshire

My family also live just outside the village of St Nicholas, which is quiet and very pretty. We like to walk the coast path, go kayaking, surfing, fishing and hack out on horseback, the Pencaer Peninsular is hallowed ground for that !

The whole place is crisscrossed with foot paths and bridleways through woods, up hills across moors and down to beaches. So much flora, wildlife and beautiful scenery, every season is so different here and brings out amazing variations for you to enjoy.

What makes this house unique

We made the house comfortable but not fussy, it is easy to keep tidy, just the sort of place we would like to stay at with a group of family or friends. Not just tidy, easy to keep clean, practical and comfortable, but also very good value for money.

We had a good time!

  • 3 of 5

We had no issues in reaching the property. We had a good time overall.

The only thing that we did not know was that all the rooms had twin beds.

The Good.

1. Excellent places and beaches to visit nearby.

2. Very good local pubs

3. Well maintained and clean property

4. Very helpful owners who took care of all our needs

What needs improvement?

1. Family beds for folks who have little kids.

2. Needs a washing machine

3. Add more DVDs to the collection especially for Kids, just in case.

4. Improve the quality of the mattresses and bedding in general.

Comfortable and clean

  • 4 of 5

The house was clean and comfortable and there was plenty of room for four young children to play. The oven, dishwasher and shower drains were not 100% efficient but did not spoil a most enjoyable holiday. It was a good base for a beautiful part of the country.

Adequate but improvements needed.

  • 3 of 5

We enjoyed our stay in St Nicholas, a very quiet village, and at Ty Newydd. The house was spacious enough for our party of 8 adults and 3 children with good parking and a large garden area. The kitchen was roomy enough for us to dine in but we had some problems with the oven which didn't get very hot and therefore it took ages to cook anything - a real issue for big family meals! The lounge was a good size for us all with a great view of the coast from the balcony. Instructions on how to work the TV would have been welcome however - it took us to the Thursday to work it out.

The bedrooms were of an adequate size but we were not happy with the downstairs ones. They were cold - some extra heaters would have been good - and the bedding smelt and felt damp. Presumably they had been made up for some time and should have been given a

proper airing before we arrived. Moreover there was no spare linen in the house should we have needed it which we have always had in previous rented properties. Also we were not shown how to turn the central heating on which would have been beneficial.

Of the three bathrooms one was a good size, the other two were not - in fact the showers were very cramped and awkward to use.

Some important information about the property from either the owner or the agency was also

lacking i.e. it would have been nice to have had some communication in advance about specific instructions on the exact location of the house and instructions on how to access the property. We weren't even given a contact number for the owner until I rang the agency itself

nor an emergency contact number when the owner went on holiday later in the week.

Finally It has to be said that we were rather taken aback by the onerous list of instructions demanding what we had to do before we left the house. We would always leave a property clean and tidy but the amount of cleaning specified made us wonder what was actually done in the 6 hour turnaround between visitors.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your review Ian, we are very glad you enjoyed your stay. I would like to explain a few of your niggles mentioned though. Our contact number is at the bottom of every communication and also on the directions that we supply prior to check in, as stated in the directions the house is opposite the church in the village, a little tricky to find but the main landmark. The kitchen oven seems to have developed an intermittent fault on the thermostat and we are replacing it, we are sorry for any inconvenience and would have done this sooner if we had been aware of it. The TV system should be self explanatory, the remote controls correspond to the separate devices and you only need to switch on the appropriate one and they are all set up to function correctly with each other. We are surprised that any bedrooms were cold in August, however when i show guests around i do explain where the thermostat is and that the central heating is on a timer that can be adjusted by request. All rooms were turned around before you arrived, we change 12 beds, clean the bathrooms thoroughly, dust, vacuum, mop the floors, empty the bins, mow the lawn, tidy the garden and generally only just have enough time between check out and check in to complete the task without a break ! The instructions for leaving the house are only guidelines, thank you for leaving the house tidy. We left for holiday the day you were leaving but we would have been very happy to resolve any issues you had during your stay, our contact number is posted in every room in the house. We always drop by to check things are going smoothly, each time we went to the house during your stay you were out. Best regards, Mark and Cathy

Great holiday home for meeting up with family or friends. Comfortable and spacious.

  • 5 of 5

Set in the quiet village of St Nicholas - an excellent spot for exploring the surrounding countryside and especially the coast. We particularly enjoyed going to Whitesands - great for the surfers, body boarders and rock pool hunters. The children loved it all. Exploring the rocky beach next to Whitesands we were lucky to see a peregrine falcon soaring above us and an inquisitive seal observing our scramble over the rocks. We also enjoyed our visits to St Davids,Fishguard and the charming village of Porthgain. We did so much but as an art lover one of my highlights was a brief visit to Judy Linnell's fabulous art studio. A real joy.

Roomy property in great location

  • 4 of 5

We had a lovely holiday and generally the house was very clean and well presented. We had a few little problems but they did not spoil our stay.

The kitchen was well equiped but the dishwasher did not work. Eating for 9 of us was cosy, 12 would be tight at the kitchen dining table!

The 3 showers were good but one packed up on Wednesday in the main shower room on the first floor.

The tap in the ensuite WHB was loose. We had 2 elderly people in our party who found access from the drive to the house a bit of a big step.

The Garden was useful and we ate out at the 2 benches provided and the location is grand, with the old church right next door, very atmospheric at half light; and wonderful Pembrokeshire walks abound! The Sloop Inn does lovely food and is in a great location. The beaches are lovely but get there early at the smaller ones in the high season. Overall a happy and memorable holiday.

Owner's Response: Thank you for the review, we do apologise for the diswasher, it has been problematic and although only used for a total of 30 weeks it has been repaired a couple of times will now be replaced. As we were away ourselves during your stay maybe the lady we engaged to show you around missed a couple of points: There is another fold away table with chairs to suppliment the kitchen table and it can be put up in the lobby. The upstairs shower does sometimes get an airlock when the downstairs taps get alot of use at the same time, it just needs to be switched on and off a few times until it works its way out. We will tighten the tap up and will look at making another step down to the patio this winter to aid access. We hope you will stay with us again, best regards, Mark & Cathy

A good house to accommodate 12 people.

  • 4 of 5

We were on Holiday at Ty Newydd from 23rd to 30th July arrived at 12-30 and the owner was there to show us around and advise where the nearest pub was. It's in a small quiet but pretty village called St Nicholas. It suited our family of 10 with each bedroom having 2 single beds. It's simply but adequately furnished. It would suit people who want to escape their mobile phones and Ipads as there was no mobile signal or Wi fi at the house It needs a car for most trips unless you want to walk to the nearest beach which would be difficult for the not so fit or elderly. The garden was mainly lawn and had a good area for children to run around or for outside eating in good weather.

The dishwasher we never mastered and felt it may be needing attention.

We found some other very nice villages with pubs to eat and drink and had several trips to St Davids which was a beautiful City and went to the nearby White Sands Bay several times for surfing and body boarding, it was the favourite beach for the whole family with a shop, restaurant and ice creams as well as good access to the beach from the large car park. It also had lifeguards for safety and was a good bucket and spade beach with lots of lovely sand. We also went to the Old Port in Fishguard a couple of times where the kids loved crabbing.

The coastal path is spectacular along this stretch of Pembrokeshire and perfect for keen walkers.
