About the Owner

Hi I am James, married to Sally, we have three grown up children. We bought Island House in 2012 and then spent the next nine months renovating it, it had been in the same family ownership for over 100 years. We have tried to blend old with new, retaining character features such as the beamed ceilings and the granite lintle above the fire place, but adding all the 'creature comforts' you would expect in the 21st century. We live in Devon, but I was brought up in Cornwall and went to school in Helston. Knowing the area fairly well Porthleven was where we wanted to be and when Island House came up for auction we were there, not for one minute expecting the hammer to go down on my bid! We love going to Island House, visiting as often as possible, and we hope you will like it as much we do.

The Pringle Family, Hong Kong

"We stayed at Island House in Porthleven this summer and we cannot praise it enough. We were two adults and three children and we had a wonderful time. The location is ideal being so close to the harbour and even though it was peak season parking was no problem. The house has been tastefully decorated, is clean, comfortable and had everything we needed. We are already planning our return stay."

Jess, Cecelia and Paddy (From Devon)

We've just spent a long weekend at Island House. The cottage itself is beautifully decorated and furnished, very crisp and clean, fully equipped and there's even an ipod dock! The village and harbour are very picturesque with individual shops and plenty of places to eat out. We will certainly return later in the season. A lovely stay - thank you.

Mr & Mrs Perry, Deal Kent. My wife and I chose Island House as we lived in Porthleven and knew the property, we have stayed in a few properties in the village, your property was perfect in every way and could not fault it; we very much enjoyed our stay and would be glad to visit again'

Carlo and Daniela, Rome, Italy,

'We were happy in your cottage! It is nicely furnished and has everything you need to live comfortably in a house.

Also, we loved the small garden and the laundry was big enough to shelter our bicycles. We think Porthleven is a wonderful place! Much much better than all other places better known or much more promoted in Cornwall.'

Mr Gullis, London. 'Many thanks, I hope very much to return in 2015 having had a marvellous holiday at your lovely property.'

Beautifully furnished cottage close to the harbour

  • 5 of 5

We had a fabulous week in Island Cottage. The cream tea and bottle of prosecco on arrival was a lovely touch. The cottage is immaculately clean and beautifully furnished with comfy beds, a super well stocked kitchen and a fantastic shower room! The courtyard garden provides a nice outside space. The harbour is less than a two minute walk! We love Porthleven and Island Cottage! We will be back!

A Perfect Property in Cornwall's Hidden Gem

  • 5 of 5

We've been visiting Porthleven for almost 20 years. Back in the day it was a modest, out of the way fishing port, with a few cafes, one or two restaurants and a smattering of pubs. 20 years on, Rick Stein has arrived and that may tell you all you need to know: Porthleven is on the map. Thankfully, it has lost none of its charm and in fact it's subtle charms have only been added to, and now Porthleven boasts what so many seek: great food, good ales, unspoilt beaches (and more ice-cream than you can reasonably consume), but crucially without hordes of tourists. The village seems to place special emphasis on retaining a local flavour. Rick may come and go, but it's the local businesses and environment that make Porthleven so special. At the heart of it (literally) is the lovely Island House. With a 7 and 8 year old in tow, and having previously stayed in the also lovely Tivoli Cottage in Rinsey, we thought long and hard about the pros and cons of village V countryside. Rest assured Porthleven is perfect for young children: they can ramble about the village safely under the watchful eye of friendly locals, and with everything in reach of Island House (in some cases, like the Post Office, literally on the door-step) it's an easy holiday for the adults too. Island House has been very tastefully decorated and restored; the bathroom is stunning, the kitchen oozes atmosphere, and the living room is the perfect hang-out zone. The small yard-garden seemed of concern at first - it is right beside the road. But the traffic moves so slowly, and never in a gear higher than second, and the high wall seemed to insulate the sound: it is also a sun-trap, perfect for lunch and a glass of wine in the evening. The beds are comfortable, and the kids room very generous (and very handy for spying on traffic to the church the post office, which our kids took a lot of delight in). This year we ate in Rick Steins (nice), Kota Kai (good), The Ship (bit pricey) and made several daily visits to Nauti But Ice. We hung out on Perranuthnoe and Praa Sands, swam in Penzance and took a trip to Eden, and also did did the Loe Bar Loop to Helston and back. James was a pleasure to deal with and very flexible - if you want a Cornish getaway that has something of the old charm mixed with great facilities, and at the heart of a thriving village with heart, you couldn't beat Island House.

Porthleven Pearl!

  • 5 of 5

Island House is the perfect accommodation for exploring Porthleven and the surrounding area.

The cottage has been beautifully renovated to a very high standard.

Light and airy carpeted bedrooms with very comfortable beds.

The downstairs living area is cosy and inviting, with a modern kitchen and we loved the slate tiles which ran throughout the ground floor and into the shower room.

Even in October we were able to spend an afternoon in the pretty courtyard garden, enjoying the late sun and a glass of wine.

Just a short walk towards the harbour, there are some nice little gift shops, fabulous eateries and a couple of old style pubs.. Even a game of pool can be enjoyed!

If you fancy a morning coffee, we recommend walking down to The Brewhouse, where you can sit whilst looking out to the harbour.

All in all, a really lovely week away in a fantastic location, with delightful accommodation! We'd recommend Island House to anyone!

Location

From the Owner

Porthleven has everything, you can eat out somewhere different every night, and you will not be disappointed. Loe Bar and The Penrose estate are fantastic places to walk or cycle, or go in the other direction towards Penzance, the dramatic cliffs and abandoned engine houses remind you of the regions rich history and mining past.

Activity and Interests

Coast/Beach:

The harbour is 2 minutes and the beach is five minutes both on foot.

Travel:

Newquay Airport is about 30 miles away and Penzance station about 15 miles. Porthleven has everything and is on a bus route and the coastal path so you could manage perfectly well without a car.

Distances:

Everything in Cornwall is within 40 min. drive and there are plenty of towns. beaches and coves nearby.

Further Details:

Porthleven is very much known for it's food with many pubs and restaurants including Rick Stein, these are mainly situated around the historic harbour, there is also an annual food festival, there are also galleries & shops as well as a reasonable sized supermarket.

Facilities

From the Owner

Island House is close to the centre of Porthleven, so everything is within a five minute walk, it is virtually detached (just joined to the neighbouring property by it's utility room which is a later addition) this is unusual as the vast majority of the cottages in the conservation area are terraced, with unusal rights of way, shared rear yards and fronting the street. This is not the case with Island House where you open the gate onto your own sunny garden, which is made up of a terrace with table, chairs and parasol, and raised beds with a variety of flowering and sub tropical plants, there are also glimpses of the inner harbour, a path leads to the front door and around the corner to the utility room.
