About the property

Brixham in the English Riviera - Five Minutes From Harbourside

A modernised cottage with character features in the heart of Brixham. Rose Cottage is a three story terrace house in the historic fishing town of Brixham. The property is conveniently located within walking distance of Brixham’s best attractions. Internally, the décor is modern and stylish but maintains many of its traditional key features such as the character fireplace. Throughout the house is a blend of old and new. The bathroom boasts a large shower and free standing bath. There is also Wi-Fi internet access throughout. Brixham is a charming seaside village with narrow streets and quaint lanes are perfect for exploring; and there is always something new to find. When you fancy a break from exploring, Brixham has a range of cafes and restaurants with stunning views of the harbour and surrounding areas. As Brixham is a fishing port it is easy to find a restaurant that specialises in fresh fish and you can regularly find the ‘catch of the day’ being served. This property is set in an ideal location close to local beaches and lovely scenic walks.

About Sara Lewis

Our family cottage has been recently modernised and refurbished yet it retains the feel of the 1850 traditional fisherman's cottage it is. Brixham is a great place to bring kids and we enjoy family breaks and the proximity to Brixham harbour where you can buy fresh fish or eat at one of the many restaurants or just sit on the dock and watch the light change. We emigrated to New Zealand as children but returned home when we finished our education. We love the countryside, and that's what's brilliant about Brixham is that very quickly you can be in the lush Devon landscape. We love the seaside, and touring the English countryside.

Sara Lewis purchased this cottage in 2014

Why Sara Lewis chose Torbay

Brixham is a friendly lively working fishing town. The cottage's proximity to the harbour, its fishing trawlers marina and boats bobbing in the harbour attracted our interest. You can buy freshly caught fish or dine in many of the local restaurants. Children will enjoy crabbing in the harbour. The South west coastal path and Berry Head (a site of special scientific interest) is within walking distance. Shoalstone beach is a short stroll away. Dartmouth is close, and a trip on the ferry is a wonderful way of accessing Slapton Sands and the rest of the Devon coastline. In Totnes you can ride on a paddle steamer up the River Dart. A boat trip to Torquay is £2.00 from the harbour. Dartmoor is accessible. There's something for everybody and that's why we chose Brixham

What makes this cottage unique

Rose Cottage retains the charm of the 1850 fisherman's home it once was, but is comfortable for six people and modern living. In a minute you can access supermarkets, marine chandlers, camera shop, a record shop 'The Cavern' in Bolton Street and the famous Mr Brown's linen shop.

Brixham was recently described as the 'Naples' of Devon. It is charming with a fascinating history of pirates, smugglers, sailors and farmers. There is handy pub 'The Manor' a few doors down. Within twenty minutes you are in the country gazing at Tor Bay from the cliffs of Berry Head, walking on to Man Sands on the South West Coastal path. You have town, country and seaside all rolled into one locale. Wake to church bells, seagulls and the foghorns as the trawlers return with the catch of the day.

Guestbook comments from the manager

Such a lovely cottage with loads of character! Great location for exploring Brixham. Comfy beds, warm and cosy and friendly, helpful hosts. Not recommended for anyone who isn't nimble on their feet due to steep steps in the cottage (to all floors) and steep surrounding areas getting to the cottage. But for anyone else it's great! Be prepared to park about a 5 minute walk away, but it's worth it to be able to stay in this conservation area.

Very Cute Cottage

  • 4 of 5

Lovely cottage and perfect location, only negatives were very difficult to find parking although we did visit during pirate festival and were close to road closures so maybe not an issue at other times and despite being very well set up for little people I'd have been terrified having a very young child in the cottage as full of steps, different levels and very narrow stairs, as two adults we found the stairs to the loft room tricky and very little head height. Cottage is beautiful and well looked after by owners.

Owner's Response: Glad you enjoyed your stay. Lucky you to be there during the Pirate Festival. It happens once a year, so the parking issues are only at festival times. The stairs are steep, not suitable for those with mobility issues, which we make clear. According to the reviews in our guestbook, children love the cottage, especially the attic room. It is a fisherman's cottage built vertically to maximise the space, perhaps they were smaller then!

Lovely home away from home

  • 4 of 5

We absolutely loved Rose Cottage and our stay in Brixham. We have been to the area many times, and it was the perfect base to explore from and come home to.

We even managed to cook a roast dinner for 8 people (and two toddlers) as the house was so well equipped.

Check in and out very easy and flexible, and great communication from Sara.

Would recommend to friends and family. Great pub next door and delicious meal in Beamers.

Perfect stay, but treated appallingly by owner

  • 1 of 5

My sister, cousin and I arranged a stay at Rose Cottage to take our elderly grandmother away. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay, the cottage was as described and we said we'd love to return, we wrote this in the cottage guestbook. Although our lovely memories of the stay with our grandmother remain, we don't quite reflect on the cottage in the same way for the following reason . . .

Several months after our visit we received an email from the owner accusing us of leaving an awful review in the guestbook and questioning why we couldn't convey disappointment to the owners directly. I quote from the email "I don’t think any other guests have been so negative about their experience at Rose Cottage, most find it to their liking. I’m very sorry that the author of this hatchet job didn’t."

The picture of the awful guestbook review the owner sent us was next to the lovely review we wrote, of course we wrote to the owner highlighting this, confirmed it was not us and stated how we would have loved to return to the cottage before receiving such an email. To receive a further response only apologising if the owner was wrong and questioning us as to who else could have wrote the awful review further shocks us, to the point we feel potential customers should be aware of the truly unprofessional and rude manner in which we were treated, in all my worldwide travels I have never experienced something like this. No one running a business deserves to be successful if they behave in such a way and I only hope this owner learns that it is wrong to assume and accuse!

Owner's Response: We have been sharing our cottage with visitors for nearly three years and I think the other reviews speak for themselves of many satisfied customers who have enjoyed their holiday and been content with our care for our guests. A month or so ago our housekeeper found an entry in our guest book which was extremely negative. If our guests have any issues or complaints we are happy to try to resolve them so I wrote to the guests who stayed for the date of the entry to enquire if this was written by one of her group. This guest's response to what i considered a reasonable query followed by an apology was unrepeatable on a public forum. I'm sorry this person feels it necessary to complain in this way, but as they say you can't please all of the people all of the time.
