Villa in Caunes-Minervois, nr Carcassonne, Aude, Languedoc-Roussillon, France - Tranquil Setting Less Than 10 Minutes Walk To Centre Of Village With Shops, Restaurants, Bank

Villa Nova is situated on the edge of the picturesque village of Caunes, with fantastic far-reaching views across the village, the Abbey and countryside. The villa has 2 bedrooms and a bathroom on each floor, making it ideal for family get-together or for 2 families holidaying together. The villa is well-appointed with flat-screen TVs (English and French channels), wifi internet, billiards room, large well-maintained salt-water pool, boules pitch, board games, books and music system to keep all ages entertained. Traditional shutters on bedrooms and tiled or wood floors throughout help to keep the house cool in summer, and air conditioning in the kitchen and living rooms provide additional comfort. During the cooler months the house can be heated by electric radiators, air conditioning, and the wood burner in the living room. Ideally positioned on a quiet, private road with no through traffic yet within walking distance to all the village amenities including a choice of restaurants (some are seasonal), pizzeria, cafes, bakery selling lovely fresh bread, cakes and pastries, small supermarket, a bank, doctor, pharmacy, artisan workshops.

Fantastic family holiday

  • 5 of 5

We spent a week in Caunes this summer and had an absolutely wonderful time. The villa was wonderful, the pictures didn't really do it justice.

We did have one day trip, to Carcassonne, but apart from that didn't feel the need to go anywhere, we were all so happy lazing around the pool.

We did eat out a few times in the village and we also regularly walked down to the patisserie in the morning to buy breakfast.

I would definitely recommend this property to anyone looking for a relaxing, quiet break in a beautiful part of the world.

A not-to-be-missed villa!

  • 5 of 5

Just home from a wonderful family holiday in this lovely villa. We were grandparents, parents and their siblings down to baby grandson and all of us had a great time. The position of the villa is second-to-none in its peaceful garden with stunning views. The spacious villa interior is beautifully done, and is extremely well-equipped.

As well as energetically climbing up to the castles at Lastours we equally enjoyed lazing by the large pool or having drinks before supper on the terrace looking out over sunlit roofs and gardens to the Abbey. Jenny was extremely helpful throughout and delightful to deal with. Altogether an idyllic rental and I recommend this villa very highly.

Excellent large villa

  • 5 of 5

This is a very nice villa and is a very good size for 8 people - as another reviewer said, it is bigger than it looks from the photos. Great swimming pool with views over village, good patio areas for evening dining with great views over the village. Modern, but with many rustic features.

It is on the edge of the village with Med forest behind - so very nice surroundings. The village has a good ambiance with an interesting old quarter and abbey.

Great wines in the vicinity for tasting and walks in the hills around from where some of the ornamental stone came for Versailles.

We had a very relaxing time and enjoyed ourselves. Thoroughly recommended.

Amazing location!

  • 4 of 5

The villa is lovely and very well equipped and much larger than the pictures show. We stayed with 4 adults and 4 children and there was plenty of room. The room layouts are quite flexible and you can easily accommodate 2 families.

The pool was lovely and a good size and was cleaned once during our stay which was sufficient. The owner answered my numerous questions before arrival and were very helpful.

The location is amazing with beautiful views. You can drive to Carcassonne, or up into the mountains, tour vineyards or just walk into the village and have a long lunch...perfect.

The area is also known as Cathar country and is steeped in history with many sites worth a visit for keen historians, such as Lastours, Carcassonne and Peyrepertuse.

For nature-lovers or those seeking an active holiday, the area offers opportunities for bird-watching, hiking, cycling, climbing, tennis, golf, skiing.

A few kilometres from Caunes, Ammonite Pottery holds pottery lessons where you can learn to throw pots on a wheel, ideal for both children and adults.

A lake at Carcassonne has many family activities during summer. The sandy beaches of the Med can be reached in less than an hour, and provide a variety of amenities and activities.

Carcassonne airport (served by Ryanair with reasonably-priced fares from many UK cities) is 20 minutes from the villa.

Other airports within reach are Beziers (1hr), Toulouse (1hr15mins), Perpignan (1hr30mins). Car hire is available at these airports.

Although not essential, a car is recommended to make the most of the activities and sight-seeing in the area.

Caunes is approximately 10 hours drive from Calais, mainly on the superb toll ways.

Carcassonne and its fortified old town La Cite, a World Heritage site, are only 20 minutes drive. The canal du midi, another world heritage site, is also within easy reach and offers boat trips or walking and cycling along its banks.

Narbonne, 40 mins, is a charming town on the canal, while the city of Toulouse (1 hr 15 mins) offers a wider choice for culture lovers. The Spanish border is approximately 2 hours and Barcelona 3 hours.

Further Details:

The local shops in Caunes sell a variety of lovely local fresh produce and general goods and can all be reached on foot, but for a wider selection there is a large supermarket within 10 mins drive.

Caunes is famous for its pink marble, which is still quarried today, and marble sculptures can be found dotted around the village. A marble sculpting competition is held in June every year.

The village holds a small market on Thursdays, while larger markets can be found at nearby towns, notably Olonzac on Tuesday mornings.

The 12th century Abbey in Caunes can be seen from the villa, and is spectacular at night when lit. The Abbey hosts a number of music events throughout summer.

The area is known as Cathar country, with the ruins of several Cathar castles in driving distance.
