A good stay however we had a few surprises

  • 4 of 5

good

the house is lovely : huge garden, amazing pool, beach volley equipment, ping pong table, barbecue even if it was dirty and no light above it.

bad

no airconditionning in the living and in the small bedroom. The airconditionning system totally ko upstairs which has been repaired during our stay but we had to handle the disturbing intervention and the impact the electric system and we had to choose between A/C or dishwasher.

The madress are really unconfortable. Not mentionned in the description of the villa : the access of the 2 rooms at the first floor which is has been a problem because we were only couples.

FIRST TIME BUT NOT THE LAST!

FIRST TIME BUT NOT THE LAST sept 13 2014

This was our first time with a vacation rental, and honestly I was really a bit anxious about it. There are so many horror stories about it. Is the villa real? is it really as beautiful as the pictures? Are the pictures really the villa we will be staying in? Will there be bedbugs? Will the towels be granny's old crappy ones from the 1960s? But from the beginning, we were completely taken care of. With such patience (and about a million emails and phone calls!) Christina calmed my worries, answered all my questions, helped us organize transport and activities, and gave invaluable advice on what to do and how to make the best of our week in Salò. And when we arrived and found that the villa is indeed real, and as beautiful as the pictures made it seem, (no sign of Granny's towels -- the linens are better than most hotels we've stayed in!), we totally relaxed and were able to enjoy an amazing holiday. Having our own house, our own kitchen and place for our kids to play and be noisy, our own pool, no fighting over sunbeds, and all that having your own house in a special place means -- but with the service and help of the local team (so without any of the anxiety, or worry, or mistakes, or getting lost, or paying the "tourist" prices at crappy restaurants because you don't know any better...etc etc..) meant that we could live like locals, as if it was our own house for the week. I don't ever want to stay in a hotel again! Thanks so much Christina and Novella, and thanks Villa Bellavita!

Great for Gourmands

  • 5 of 5

We had an amazing time at the villa Bellavita, the villa is big and comfortable and super clean, one of the best we have ever stayed in. The service from Novella was top notch, way more than we ever expected in a vacation rental. What I liked most was the really well equipped kitchen - for me an Italian holiday is all about food! Food, food, sun, food, beach, food! It was fun cooking for everyone, and everyone cooking all together, and using the fancy slicer was a unique experience all on its own! And the open fire braziers in the garden were so cool, more than once we actually cooked on the open fire, which is something we've never found in any other villa we've stayed in. Giant barbecue and a sink with running water by the barbecue. Oh, and great gastronomy at the Pegaso restaurant just up the road. Absolutely recommended, and we will be back -- and next year we will ask Novella to organize the wine tasting in the villa with chef and sommelier!

Perfect Holiday!

  • 5 of 5

Our family gathered together from all parts of the world for our holiday this year, and Villa Bellavita was just the perfect spot for us. It is private, quiet, and utterly relaxing, but with plenty to do. Kids had lot of fun with the ping pong and in the garden and pool, leaving us adults the space to really relax and enjoy each other's. With the woods all around, you really feel "away from it all"...but its not actually remote. Only a few minutes to the supermarket or to the beach and even restaurants in walking distance. The interiors are fresh and comfortable, and we loved the feeling of being in the country together with the urban comfort and design we are used to at home. We will definitely be back, and can't wait until next year!

Location

From the Owner

It is so completely private and quiet, surrounded by the woods. It is like being in your own little kingdom, and a perfect spot to relax and take a break from our hectic and busy lifestyle. It feels remote, but it is actually just a few minutes drive to the life and sites of the city of Salò. We love the feeling of being in the deep countryside, but without the actual inconvenience of a distant rural location. We also love the contrast of the rural location, fields, woods, nature, with the ultra urban design of the house. It feels like our Manhattan loft was air-lifted into the countryside for a very special kind of retreat.

A wonderful spot for a holiday, Salò is the perfect balance between small town and city. It has characteristic cobblestone streets and beautiful old world architecture, with everything in easy walking distance. And it also has all the services and entertainments you expect in a city, including theatre, museum, historic sights, restaurants, bars, shops and supermarkets, a bit of nightlife and music, and more. Its lake front promenade is purported to be the longest in Italy, and you can stroll along the lake with beaches to one side and side walk cafés, restaurants, bars and delightful small shops to the other.

Salò was founded during the Roman era with the name Pagus Salodium. It is not certain how the town got its name but one theory is that it was named after Salodia, an Etruscan Queen who lived here. In the Middles Ages, the town became a stronghold of the powerful Visconti family from Milan. In 1440, after a long war, Salò join the "Magnifica Patria" and fell under the rule of the Venetian Republic. In 1560, Salò was eventually bestowed with the honorary title of 'city by royal decree'.

Historical sites include:

- The Duomo di Santa Maria Annunziata (cathedral), rebuilt in late Gothic style in the 15th century. It has a noteworthy Renaissance portal by Gasparo Cairano and Antonio Mangiacavalli, paintings by Zenone Veronese (16th century), a Polyptych of Paolo Veneziano's school and a Madonna and Saints by Romanino.

- The Palazzo della Magnifica Patria (16th century). The palace is home to the Historical Museum of the Azure Ribbon, an exhibition of documents on Renaissance history, on Italy's colonial wars, the Spanish Civil War and the Resistance against Fascism.

- The Communal Palace is the seat of the Civic Archaeological Museum, with findings from the ancient Salodium.

During the Second World War, from 1943 to 1945, the town was the base of the Republic of Salò from where Mussolini’s party ruled. This was a puppet state of Nazi Germany during Mussolini’s last years of decline, and after the Allied invasion he had no real powers over the rest of the country. The official title of the government of the Salò Republic was the "Italian Social Republic".
