Located in the centre of the old village. The cottage is a 1830's grade II listed fisherman's cottage, which has been renovated to a high standard and has everything for a relaxing stay. The cottage has a a southern aspect making the front garden a lovely sun trap. Hinderwell House has everything you need for a perfect stay in Staithes, a village steeped in history, with so much to see and do. A lovely tearoom, great pubs, fantastic butcher and lots more .

Ideal for a couple

This lovely welcoming home has been delightfully and carefully modernised. Internet is available on a pay BT basis but it is good to be away from now and appreciate the then. A good selection of books describing old Staithes is provided. Lovely walk to Runswick Bay and beyond if you wish and good bus service X4 between Saltburn and Whitby brings you home.

Good location

Hinderwell house is in an ideal location in beautiful Staithes. Situated just off the high street it's easy to unload luggage before parking out of the village (no parking in the village which adds to its immense charm). The cottage is warm and ideal for a break for couples. Warm welcome and good pub food at The Cod and Lobster. We will stay longer next time.

Fantastic short break!

We had a great long weekend in the picturesque village of Staithes. The cottage is perfectly situated in the heart of old town; about 2 minutes walk from the harbour. Small, but perfectly formed and everything that you need for a weekend away. We took our 7 month old. The bedroom was just about big enough to cope with the travel cot. We really could not fault the cottage. We will definitely be back.

Gorgeous cosy cottage

Hinderwell House is a lovely, cosy cottage - just perfect for two people. It was very clean and had everything we needed. Simon was on hand when we asked him to help us out with the hot water. There are lots of walks straight from the cottage and we would recommend the Fox and Hounds at Dalehouse for good, inexpensive beer and food.

Lovely cottage in super location

We stayed for a long weekend, the cottage is extremely well looked after, superbly decorated and everything you need has been thought of, really comfortable. The only issue we had was after the first night we had no hot water I contacted the number on the paperwork we had been sent (twice) but did not get a reply and it was not fixed. We therefore left on the Sunday instead of the Monday as we were boiling kettles for hot water which wasn't ideal for washing. I did speak to the owner on the Monday using a different number that I hadn't taken with me as it wasn't on the actual "cottage information that Id taken with me" and informed him so hopefully if that is now fixed then I cant recommend this cottage highly enough for everything else, I would stay again - providing I would be assured the hot water issue had been fixed.

Lovely quirky cottage, excellent location but improvements required maintenance and customer service

Hinderwell House is a pretty cottage situated in a central location in Staithes. Staithes is a lovely quirky fishing village. Excellent coastal and moorland walking. Although we enjoyed our stay we were left feeling quite disappointed, especially in light of the previous excellent reviews. I would have preferred to have discussed these issues with the owner however despite contacting Simon by email on our second day over the main (hot water) issue he still has not contacted me.

The hot water was a problem in the kitchen and shower. On the whole we worked out that if we were very careful to open the tap to a certain point we could get hot water - opening or closing any further meant it quickly went cold. Unfortunately some times we could not achieve hot water at all.

Although the shower cubicle is huge the shower is very difficult to regulate (similar issue as the kitchen tap) resulting in us mainly having to be satisfied with a tepid to warm shower.

The kitchen would benefit from an electric kettle and microwave. The plates are badly crazed though not broken or chipped. We could not find a dustpan and brush or a sweeping brush. The metal small shovel for the fire was broken which made it difficult to sweep up then hearth. A hairdryer would have been helpful. The glass door knob from the shower room to the landing fell off - on examination it was found that the glass knob had been been 'glued' on to the metal. We could not find a visitor information pack - this we did mention to Simon when he called in not long after we arrived.

In conclusion this is a lovely property, ideal for two adults in a lovely village, but the cottage has some maintenance issues and there is a need for the owner to improve his customer service. With these areas addressed then I would recommended to my family and friends.

Owner's Response: Hello, Totally gutted I got a negative response to anyone staying in Hinderwell House. The water system has been in the cottage for over three years and never missed a beat! I have now had fitted two new systems and has run fault free now for two months. Simon
