About the property

Cottage in Piddlehinton, Dorchester, Dorset, England - Walk to The Village Pub or further along the bridle path

West Lane Cottage sits in lovely ancient Piddlehinton which has a beautiful church and the River Piddle running through it. Many visitors return year after year saying that this cottage is a real "home from home" with everything you could need for a self catering holiday. We are set in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, close to Dorchester, the Jurassic Coast, Sherborne, Cerne Abbas, Thomas Hardy's birthplace and some beautiful views and walks.

Unusually, we have a kitchen/breakfast room, a living room and a second reception room for quiet reading, watching DVD's, or playing. We also offer a cloakroom downstairs, an en-suite shower room and a separate bathroom upstairs.

About Helen Frost

Alan Helen and Hannah Frost live in Chichester West Sussex right now but love Dorset! So does our cocker spaniel, Watson and the bridle path next door to West Lane Cottage is perfect for walks long and short.

We have successfully run West Lane Cottage as a holiday cottage since 2007. Since 2010, we have also run a sister cottage - Wren Cottage, Tolpuddle.

You will find a good number of reviews about our cottages and our service on this site and also on Trip Advisor.

If you would like to speak to Helen in person, do call 01243 785378 with any queries.

Helen Frost purchased this cottage in 2007

Why Helen Frost chose Dorset

We wanted to buy a bolt hole cottage somewhere that we could easily reach. A village in rural Dorset was our choice but one that was not too far from Dorchester and all the great sights of Dorset including Durdle Door, Lulworth Cove and Chesil Beach. The roads are so quiet here compared to West Sussex and we love the country walks on our doorstep and also the great village pub The Thimble, just a short walk down the bridlepath.

What makes this cottage unique

We have a second reception room - somewhere to read quietly, watch DVDs or play games.

Take a stroll along the bridle path to the lovely old thatched village pub or to the Millennium Green play area. Alternatively you can take a range of circular walks from the cottage of about an hour taking in wonderful views. There is a village shop and post office in the next door village of Piddletrenthide (1.8 miles) and also at Charlton Down and Puddletown about the same distance away. Both Piddletrenthide and Puddletown offer a further choice of pubs. Nearby places of interest include: Dorchester; Poundbury; Cerne Abbas; Athelhampton House and Gardens; Kingston Maurward Animal Farm and Gardens; the Tolpuddle Martyrs Museum; Minterne House and Gardens; the Tank Museum and Maiden Castle.

Excellent cottage, comfortable and very well equipped . Dogs loved it.

Helen the owner was very helpful in every way. We loved the Dorset biscuits that awaited us in the kitchen. Amazing shower. Wouldn't hesitate to recommend to a friend.

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for your review of West Lane Cottage in Piddlehinton. We are glad to hear that you found it comfortable, well equipped and dog friendly. The best thing to hear is that you wouldn't hesitate to recommend the cottage to a friend - we have always taken self catering holidays ourselves and know how hard it can be to find somewhere that is safe for dogs and yet offers all the facilities and equipment that we humans require too! Many people call West Lane Cottage a real home from home - that is what we strive for.

A real home from home

  • 5 of 5

West Lane cottage is everything you could want - comfortable, clean, amazing central heating so very cosy, extremely well equipped with high quality appliances. It doesn't lack anything. Lots of information provided about places to visit, walks, restaurants, etc. The village is very pretty and the Thimble Inn provides very good food. Well located for visiting Dorset, which we loved. Didn't want to come home, could have stayed another week. Highly recommended.

Owner's Response: Thanks so much for your lovely review of West Lane Cottage - we are so glad that you enjoyed the cottage and the area as we do! We have tried to make the cottage everything that you could want for a self catering holiday as we understand how important it is to feel that you have all that you need. As you say, there is much to explore in the area and many visitors return to visit the places they missed first time round and to re-visit old favourites. I will pass your comments (anonymously) onto the Thimble who will be pleased as well I am sure.

A wonderful little find

  • 5 of 5

West Lane Cottage is a delightful place to stay. The cottage itself is both welcoming and homely. We stayed here for a week with our two sons, and our Cocker spaniel.

Helen was wonderfully helpful throughout - from our initial contact when booking, right through to our arrival. Supplying us with useful information, and helpful advice regarding both our stay, and with options for days out. Thank you for the welcome tray!

We really loved the location of West Lane Cottage. Located in the beautiful picture postcard style village of Piddlehinton, the thatch roofed houses and river piddle running through make for an idyllic setting, yet only a 10 min drive to the County town of Dorchester.

We ventured out as far west as Lyme Regis, and East as Kimmeridge Bay and Corfe, and always enjoyed coming home the cottage.

The cottage is extremely well equipped with everything that you could wish to need, stacks of local information and local knowledge, games and jigsaws, books, DVDs and the all important wi-fi access!!

The kitchen is great, as are the bedrooms and bathrooms. We enjoyed BBQ's in the courtyard using the BBQ provided in the shed! Lovely.

The boys both enjoyed the Millenium field, and playing in the river catching fish, whilst the dog and I loved discovering the beautiful rolling hills of the surrounding countryside.

Thank you Helen for out stay, we thoroughly enjoyed everything.

Owner's Response: Thank you for taking the time to post a review of West Lane Cottage. We are so glad you found it to be a delightful place to stay. We do try to "go the extra mile" by providing little information about the cottage and the area before and after you arrive, as we know it is nice to be able to look forward to a holiday and maybe plan a few things to do. As you say, the cottage is only a 10 minute drive to the County town of Dorchester and it's amenities but you feel really quite rural in this lovely old village which, as you discovered, is well placed for exploring West Dorset. Kimmeridge Bay is always worth a visit and Corfe quite stunning. We try to ensure that the cottage is always extremely well equipped with everything that you could need whilst on holiday as we enjoy self catering ourselves, with our cocker spaniel! We are lucky to have the Millennium Green play area so near, as well as the village pub and lovely local walks. We hope to hear from you again sometime!

Owner's Response: Thank you for taking the time to post a review of West Lane Cottage. As you say, the walks from the bridle path next door to the cottage are great and take in some spectacular views. You can walk to the village pub, "The Thimble", or further afield - out and in or round in a circle. Glad you had a good time and got to meet a few people - your email said "The village is beautiful and the people lovely and friendly, we got chatting to a few people and everyone passed the time of day."

A fantastic cottage in a beautiful village

  • 5 of 5

Since we booked the cottage Helen has been fantastic at providing us with more than enough information to make our stay as easy as possible, particularly with 2 dogs in tow!! Quite simply the cottage is beautiful and has a real home from home feeling - from the quality of towels and linen even down to the cutlery!! It was warm, homely and impeccably kept. Its location was great for travelling to both Weymouth and Lulworth Cove, but is also only a 5 min walk to the local pub where we also spent some time!! I would recommend this cottage to anyone wishing to stay in the area, we only wish we could have had a few more days to enjoy it!!!

Owner's Response: Thank you for your review of Wren Cottage. We have always taken cottage holidays ourselves and I understand how helpful it can be to know where to go with the dog, where to visit and eat out and so on and have an idea what is going in the area during your holiday. It is this real local knowledge and care which differentiates the cottage owner from an agency I think. We have taken care to equip both our cottages with quality furniture and fittings and have recently installed new TV's in both and had both re-decorated to maintain our high standards. We are lucky that the Thimble Inn is such a good local pub and is a short walk along the bridle path. As you say, a short drive will take you to a choice of Dorset Hotspots such as Lulworth, Weymouth, Dorchester, and Sherborne. We hope you will be able to come and visit again!

Owner's Response: Thanks for taking time to review your stay at West Lane Cottage. It is good to hear that you enjoyed the cottage in January - it can only get better in May or June when you return as it will be a pleasure to walk along West Lane and enjoy the spring/summer plants and birds. An hour's circular walk will allow you to take in some wonderful views and just enjoy the peace of the countryside although you can, as you found, incorporate a stop at the Thimble Inn. There is so much to explore in the area that I am sure a second visit will be full of trips to the likes of Cerne Abbas, Weymouth, Sherborne and Dorchester. We should have had a new en suite fitted by then and the garden made over, so all our improvements will be complete - for the time being!
