About the property

Cottage in Storth, Nr. Arnside, Silverdale and Kendal, Lake District, Cumbria, England - 5 Mins To The Coast, Sympathetically Renovated In 2014

A detached 2 bedroom period character cottage set against a limestone pavement within woodland in a stunning natural location on the edge of the tranquil coastal village of Storth within the Silverdale-Arnside Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in South Lakeland. This pretty cottage has all of the home comforts: a private natural woodland garden, hand built wooden country cottage kitchen with range cooker, a wood-burning stove to settle down in front of in the evening, modern country bathroom, and a comfortable king-size bed with quality linens to collapse into at the end of your day. The cottage was renovated in 2014 using quality natural materials and Farrow and Ball paints. With woodland and coastal walks from the doorstep, Leighton Moss RSPB and Lake District attractions a few minutes away, Rock Cottage is perfectly located to spend some time out enjoying the best of this region's beauty.

About Claire Stevenson

We are both approaching 'middle youth', have a little boy and work at universities in the region. Having a family, running a holiday cottage and working too means that we understand how precious time spent together on holiday is!

Claire Stevenson purchased this cottage in 2011

Why Claire Stevenson chose England

We love the Arnside-Silverdale AONB and the Lake District as it suits our passion for woodland and coast. The AONB is more tranquil than many areas of the Lakes, and we love walking here. There are also some great pubs and eateries in the locality.

We actually bought Rock Cottage with the idea of extending it to become our family home. However, we realised that the cottage is ideally suited as a holiday home as it is so characterful and in a stunning location and we love welcoming guests to stay.

What makes this cottage unique

Our favourite things to do at Rock Cottage:

* Go for a walk with our dog through the woods to the 'Fairy Steps' or down to the coast.

* Stop off for a pint during the above at the local dog-friendly pub with amazing views over the bay - perhaps you'll see the famous tidal bore coming in.

* Sit in the garden with a favourite book and hear only birdsong.

* Rustle up a simple, hearty supper on our fab range cooker.

* Throw some logs into the wood-burning stove and settle down for a cosy evening in. Decide whether it's a wine or hot-chocolate night!

* Collapse into the comfy king-size iron bed and know for sure that you won't be woken by traffic noise or street lights. You might hear an owl if you're lucky!

Guestbook comments from the owner

'Beautifully renovated dog-friendly cottage in a lovely peaceful location. The cottage is a lovingly renovated spacious cottage with a fab range cooker. Local shops and pubs are very close (prob 2/3 mins in a car) and places like Kendal etc are easily accessible. This cottage is ideally located for visiting a number of Cumbria/Lake District areas and it's a real bonus that it's dog friendly.' Claire, Andy and Ruby the greyhound, Derby, September 2014.

'We have had a lovely rest in your beautiful cottage. Very relaxing - no traffic, no street lights. Long lie-ins every morning and cosy nights by the fire - bliss!! We would love to visit again!' Diane and Tim, Staffordshire.

'Cottage was ace. Fire and books/ DVDs combined well for chillin' evenings. Loved the location, esp. the woods, which our wee chaps romped about in with abandon.' Andy, Beth and sons, Glasgow.

Rock Cottage Old Fishermans Cottage

  • 3 of 5
Verified Stay

Lovely old fishermans cottage wonderful and peaceful break, warm and cosy, gave us everything we wanted, slight slip up on our part with the sleeping arrangements one king size bed and bunk beds was not ideal for our needs. We had gone on this weekend break as a celebration for my daughters 50th . As I am in my 70s the bunks were not ideal for either of us, my fault I hadn't realised when I booked.

This apart loved everything about the lovely Rock Cottage

Concidering the age of Rock Cottage it is very well maintained. The wood burner was a delight.

Yes I would recommend Rock Cottages to the right person

The stone steps up up to the cottage would not be ideal for everyone.

Anyone with a disability would not manage the steps

Or small children could not play out side

The steps are slippery when wet or icy, and a bit of a challenge in the dark

Owner's Response: Thanks for taking the time to write a review of Rock Cottage Jean. I'm glad you felt able to give a general endorsement for the cottage despite bunk beds not being ideal for you. We try hard to ensure that our listing clearly sets out the details of the bedroom accommodation and note that the cottage is unsuitable for guests with mobility issues so it's a little disappointing to receive a 3 star review on this basis but we will review how this information is presented. Best wishes, Claire [For the interest of other potential guests I should note that the main bedroom has a generous 5ft iron bed and the bunks in the adjoining second bedroom have full standard single bed size 3ft mattresses with plenty of height to sit up in bed to read, though we fully appreciate that these may not be to every adult's preference. Thankfully we've had no reports of accidents on the two sets of four stone steps in the garden, but obviously wouldn't advise those with toddlers to allow children to play in the cottage garden unattended. Our housekeeper puts rock salt on the steps and path before guests' arrival whenever frost is forecast, and this is left by the outhouse with a shovel for guests to top up during their stay if necessary.]

Fabulous location, close enough to villages but far enough away for total peace and quiet.

Great kitchen facilities and although it was minus 5 outside the cottage was lovely and warm.

We can't wait to revisit Rock Cottage

Tranqual cottage in quiet location

  • 5 of 5
Verified Stay

We would definitely recommend staying at Rock cottage to others, as it is in an ideal location to explore the lake district. We especially liked the welcome basket supplied especially the dog treats as this give the property that extra special touch. We are looking to stop at the cottage in the summer as the surrounding area will look stunning in the sunshine. We had a small problem on arrival, the property not cleaned, but this was due to unforeseen circumstances effecting the cleaner, but Claire was quick to notify us, communication was excellent and we also received a refund of half first nights stay.we will definitely look in to staying here again in the future.
