About the property

Villa in Pousadouros, Nr. Arganil, Silver Coast, Portugal - Stunning Private Peaceful Location, Woodland Setting, Miles Of Forest Tracks, Close To River Beach

Quinta do Acor is a stunning luxury villa in a very tranquil, private location on the edge of the Serra do Acor mountains within the Beira region of central Portugal but still part of the silver coast. It's an unspoilt rural area of Portugal. The house is split into two appartments that are linked and can be used as one house but afford you a lot of privacy if needed. there is a modern kitchen with everything you could need and a really good portuguese coffee maker ! In the lounge there is a large smart tv with satellite and internet tv and a playstation so most tv is possible . There are books games and dvds . The bathrooms have different designs and are luxurious with large showers and baths and one with a large double Jacuzzi bath .The beds are all kingsize but large singles are available. The mattresses are handmade and are very very comfortable ,We use top quality cotton linen and towels. There are walk in wardrobes with plenty of space with mirrors and lights . In one of the apartments is a very large living room with a small kitchen run that can be used as a forth bedroom if needed . The whole of Quinta Do Acor is on the internet and you can access it in most places around the villa .

Upstairs is another large four bedroom apartment but this is not going to be used until next year . The house is situated on the edge of a cork and pine forest and walking distance to the river Alva river beach which is sanded each year and well looked after and a great place to swim or to jump in by rope or diving board. Or just walk to the other side of the river across a wide shallow walkway come waterfall where you will find a very nice local food restaurant and bar. Or stay at the beach bar and have a snack and a drink. There is a small cafe in our village that is a ten minute walk by road or through the woods which can organise fresh bread if needed and they love to chat if you want to practice some Portuguese.

There are other cafes and eating places within walking distance via road or track and all other amenities are all in easy reach by car in three nearby towns,Arganil ,Coja and Tabua .All have hotels , banks, supermarkets of all types and plenty of shopping with lots of places to eat and drink .The closest Arganil has a small hospital and private clinic and doctors and dentists and vets.

We are forty minutes from the historic old capital of Portugal. Coimbra is one of the worlds oldest university cities with a preserved medieval old town and one of the largest excavated Roman settlements called Conimbriga is nearby.

Coimbra sits either side of the wide river Mondego and has the historical and modern woven together .There are good shops hidden away down alleys and large stores and markets all around with two large modern shopping centres with multiscreen cinemas .

Not far from Coimbra you hit the Atlantic coast and the fantastic sand dune protected wide beaches.

Back at the Villa you arrive from Porto in under an hour and a half and enter down a wooded track through gates into a space of total enchanting privacy .

The villa has a large parking area where there is one of four covered water wells . A fish man visits here wednesday and thursday lunchtime and toots his horn to see if you would like fresh fish and if you don't appear he leaves ,this area is cut off from the house by large hedging and walls .

On entering you can walk all aroung the villa on the cobbled and tiled walkways passing the organic garden with veg ,fruit and herbs and round the back of the indoor kitchen where theres a outside garden seating area that gets the morning sun and is a great place for breakfast .

From here you are looking down the garden and over your hectare of land and forest and up to the mountains ,these are beautifully clear most of the year with endless sunny blue skies but in January and Febuary there may be snow up there . The Serra Da Estrela mountains ( mountains of the stars ) are the only mountains in Portugal that you can go skiing and a great place to visit at all times.

Going around the path you go between two gardens. One is below the pool area and the planted banks up to it and the other is a shaded garden area and beds at the back of the villa.

Here you can go up some wide granite steps to the very large upstairs sun terrace which over looks the pool ,gardens and the other courtyards ,it's totally private and also a good spot to keep an eye on the children by the pool or down the land. Its a perfect sun trap but with shade provided and it gets the last of the evening sun so its perfect for an evening cocktail or a peaceful spot for early morning yoga or evening star gazing . Below is a covered balcony area leading from the house, a lovely spot to relax with a private shady garden and large cherry tree with a hammock and views to the mountains.

Across the path from here steps lead up to the large sun patio around the pool with sun beds and umbrellas, chairs and tables. The large 12 by 5 metre pool is on a raised area with beautiful views with flower and shrub planted banks on three sides which are colourful and fragrant . The banks unexpectedly and naturally help to keep the pool warm with the sun.

There are two sets of steps leading up to the pool from different ends and there is plenty of space around the whole pool for sunbeds and umbrellas to be moved with the sun theres also a small grassy shaded private area to just relax on and dig your toes into! The pool is a gently sloping 4 1/2 to 5 1/2 ft deep and looking out from the deep end its like an infinity pool with a fantastic view of the mountains , gardens and forests. The whole area is very private and not overlooked so you can sunbathe freely. At the back of the pool is the bar, wet room and toilet and to the front of this are large cork oaks, shrubs and planted beds amongst and under these are various shaded seating areas which are great places for reading or just relaxing . The trees , gardens and a large well and water feature here are all lit at night and make a fantastic area in front of your own private bar .This is well decorated and beautifully lit with a newly covered pool table. There is an amplifier for iPods etc and good speakers, air con, internet, ice machine and a wood burner just for the winter holidays or for the party evenings if you can stand the heat ! Out the side door of the bar is another courtyard with a large deep beautiful brick well safely covered by a lit metal structure so you can peer down into the depths. In this courtyard there is the washroom with a large modern washing machine and a tumble dryer with ironing board ,spare linen and towels plus a large freezer if you're having a party and want plenty of ice and cold drinks or ice creams.

Opposite this is the pool pump house . A pool man comes each week to check on the copper diode system that keeps the pool free of chemicals .

The villa is free from public water and is fed from a 110 metre deep borehole within the courtyard that can produce 1500 litres an hour at most times.

Out of this courtyard and down some wide steps you enter a very large portuguese cobbled courtyard that has the entrances to other parts of the villa . There are solar lights here and around the whole property that look magic at night .there is another large cobble covered well here with a water feature and beautiful raised gardens surrounding it .

In this courtyard is the outside kitchen , dining area with marble work surfaces , sink ,dishwasher ,fridge and a conventional double ovened six burner multifuel range but also a fantastic handmade wood fired bread oven .This is the place that our guests say they spend most of their time. It has a large communal table and chairs, and a great atmosphere . built onto this is a tiled bbq area underneath a delicious eating grape vine a rose and a kiwi covered pergola . This whole area is perfect for preparing shady lunches or candlelit evening meals. There are many different seating areas in sun and shade alike at Quinta Do Acor with plenty of space for everyone to relax and enjoy. The property has plenty of charm and space. A lot of clients say they did'nt venture far as they had everything they wanted but it's also great for explorers and perfect for nature lovers, with miles of country side for walking, mountain biking, and activities such as riding, kayaking, and abseiling, or as a base to explore the markets, historic towns and villages or to soak up the Portuguese culture.

About Clive

I live between England and Portugal, but wherever I am but heart is always in Portugal. I have enjoyed creating a unique space for people to enjoy, and although the property has only been let for a short amount of time I have enjoyed lots of positive feedback from my guests.

Clive purchased this villa in 2004

Why Clive chose Central Portugal - Silver Coast

We bought in this location because of the diversity of the countryside, in the foothills of the mountains but with wide clean rivers and river beaches and an hour from the Atlantic Coast it enjoys the best of all worlds. This is unspoilt Portugal, with a traditional laid back way of life, no traffic, a low cost of living and total freedom.

What makes this villa unique

The Quinta is unique in that it it enjoys a priviliged position in nature, set in an acre of its own land and surrounded by a cork and pine forest, with no neighbouring properties, but within a 5 minute walk from the local village of Pousadouros and a 10 minute drive from Arganil town. The emphasis is on quality, detail and space. There's plenty to keep everyone happy, floating on the freshwater pool while enjoying the mountain views, lying in a hammock with a book, sunbathing on the terrace, rocking the bar with a beer and a game of pool, or trying your hands at pizza making. There are plenty of outdoor activities such hiking mountain biking or kayaking or you could use the place as a base from which to explore the busy market towns, historical sights and cities, wine and food of the region.

Quinta do Acor is in an undiscovered, beautiful part of Portugal. The undulating tree filled landscape invites you to slow down and relax. There isn't a massive amount to 'do' and, if that suits you, as it did us, you'll be happy here. Having said that we seemed to 'do' plenty. Nearby Roman ruins at Conimbriga were magnificent; Coimbra was good too, wandering around the steep narrow alleyways around the historic University was the best bit. The river beaches steal the show though; there's one just down the road which is small but good. Further afield Avo and Gois were great, the former for jumping off small cliffs. Other attractions include the nearby small town of Coja where happiness can be found relaxing under a tree covered terrace sipping a delicious Portuguese coffee before popping into the boutique bakery for a delicious pastel de nata ( custard tart to die for!)

The Quinta is superb. It's a mixture of luxury and fun. The luxury is to be found in the 3 ensuite bedrooms, beautiful pool, outdoor dining kitchen and a whole bunch of other stuff. The fun in the fabulous pool room which has a pool table, bar, amp, speakers and even red fairy lights! Tacky it isn't quirky and fun it definitely is.

Phillipa is the perfect 'host'. She lives in a cottage which is screened away at the side of the property and is there should you need anything but ultra discreet and really friendly. She made us feel so welcome and made sure we were happy and had everything we needed.

The immediate surroundings of the house are fantastic. There are MILES of mountain bike and running tracks straight out the gate through beautifully scented pine and eucalyptus forests. The roof terrace is wonderful for star gazing - the night skies are amazing here. We saw THE brightest shooting star flash as it entered the atmosphere!

An altogether top place, we are delighted to recommend it to anyone who appreciates the outdoors and the simple life but from the comfort of a kingsize bed and a poolside sun lounger!

Silver coast and Central Portugals hidden gem

  • 5 of 5

We were looking for a short break and really needed privacy and quiet and definitely no neighbours near as we have two boisterous puppies in training and a Dad who is recuperating from an operation. We got all of this in spades at Quinta Do Acor ,what a beautiful hidden place . We didn't expect the weather to be so good but we had some good sunny days when we left the teenagers and Dad playing pool and watching films in the bar with the woodburner blasting away while we took the chance to go and see the snow up in the mountains and visit a spa and the city of Viseu .

Most days though we stayed at the villa and cooked and relaxed ,there is so much room around the grounds and out on the woodland paths that the dogs and I got plenty of walking and found some great tracks down to the river and a nice cafe for a coffee and a brandy ! .

Thankyou for having us there and thankyou to Kaz and Emily the gardeners come organisers etc for welcoming us and seeing us off and for giving us good advice on where to visit and showing us how to cook with the bread oven , which we mastered in the end ! We shall definitely be coming back later in the year .

Owner's Response: Thank you Jo I am glad everything went so well . I know you were worried about the kids at this time of year but with the snow and skiing available up on the mountain this time of year and the tracks and rivers around the villa to explore there is plenty to do if you can get them off the pool table and out of the bar ! It's also a great place for dogs and well done for getting to the cafe on the tracks . It's a nice place to have a good coffee and chat as a halfway rest point on a walk ! We look forward to seeing you again later in the year . Clive

Stunning, luxurious villa with beautiful views

  • 5 of 5

Quinta do Acor is a truly stunning, luxurious place and we had a fantastic holiday there. It definitely has the “wow” factor! We were welcomed and showed around by the lovely Lucy who was extremely helpful and friendly. The house and grounds are spacious and absolutely beautiful with a private swimming pool with mountain views and lots of secluded places to sit, relax and take in the breathtaking scenery. It is an idyllic place in which to unwind and enjoy nature whilst also taking advantage of the comforts of modern life such as the internet, English TV, films etc.

We found it spotlessly clean, comfortable and extremely well equipped. Everything has been so well thought out with great attention to detail. I enjoy cooking so having a choice of kitchens was brilliant. There is the spacious, well equipped kitchen in the main house plus the outside kitchen which has a pizza oven plus its own fridge, BBQ and dishwasher. It was also lovely to be able to pick organic tomatoes, peppers and herbs straight from the garden.

We loved sitting in the garden in the morning with a cup of tea, watching and listening to a variety of birds who also seem to love the quinta and as we had a hot, sunny week, we enjoyed swimming in the pool whilst taking in the beautiful mountain views.

The solar lights give the quinta a magical feel at night and having our own private bar was an absolute treat! We spent several evenings enjoying a drink, listening to music and playing pool then off to bed for a sound nights sleep in the comfy beds.

As Quinta Do Acor is so tranquil and comfortable, it would have been very easy not to have ventured outside of the grounds at all during our holiday. However, we wanted to explore the area and also put the Portuguese that we are learning into practice. Quinta Do Acor is perfectly situated, being private and secluded yet less than a 10 minute stroll into the pretty village of Pousadouros where there is a welcoming little cafe serving coffee, tea, beer and wine. Arganil with its shops, banks and supermarkets is an easy 10 minute drive and we also really enjoyed a day out at the beautiful Secarias river beach which is about a 15 minute walk or a couple of minutes in the car.

We would definitely recommend Quinta Do Acor and we look forward to staying again. Whether you are a couple, small family or bigger group, Quinta Do Acor is an amazing place for a holiday!

Owner's Response: Thank you Tanya for the review I am so glad that you had such a nice time outside our normal season. So many people don't realise that we sill have great weather in September and how cheap it is up here in central Portugal. I am pleased you enjoyed our gardens and that you found the little cafe just up the road as its a bit hidden away, they can get fresh bread for you if you want to order it for each day of your stay.which I'm sure they told you,Its a lovely old village and they are all very keen to chat if you can try a bit of Portuguese! we look forward to seeing you again thanks again Clive

A Magical Slice of Heaven at Christmas

  • 5 of 5

Very much looking forward to our up and coming stay at this beautiful enchanted villa for our second christmas in a row !! We have never been back to the exact same place twice, but after spending our last Christmas and New Year there, we just knew, if we could, we had to do it again this year. We'd seen the pictures online before we arrived last year, but really, they just couldn't do it justice. The property and grounds were just staggering... the sort of thing you see in the movies, but don't generally get to experience in real life. We were just blown away by all the thought and attention to detail that had obviously gone into so many parts of this amazing place. Too much to mention here, but from the welcome pack and the "meet and greet" from the wonderful Lucy, who is just a wealth of knowledge and so helpful. To the amazing array of beautifully arranged solar lights around the gardens and walkways that came to life after the sun went down and lit our way to our favourite night time spot... The Bar !! (More about this later !) The huge smart TV with "English channels" amongst many others, The rooms were all immaculate, as were the bathrooms. The kitchen which has everything you could ever need... (Apart from the food of course..) and then there's the wonderful outside kitchen, with it's own fridge, crockery cutlery and dishwasher !! Perfect !! Anyway, back to the bar... This is not just a bar, its your very own pub !! It has a wonderful pool table, sound system that you can plug phone's, ipod's etc.. into and play any music you like and as loud as you like with no complaints from any neighbours... Because there aren't any !! Our favourite nights were cooking and eating in the outside kitchen, (we got very good at cooking all sorts of things in that lovely wood fired oven !!) and after we would retire to the bar for drinks and pool or chess tournaments and sometimes break out one of the many board games provided and find ourselves giggling on into the night with no interruptions at all.. Wonderful !! The weather last year was just lovely, sunny warm days. December and we were sipping cocktails around the pool, made in our bar, doors open and chilled music playing with such idyllic views... Kind of changed our idea of what christmas could be !! We found lots of places to eat not too far away and an "English Pub" that served English food and beers... Quinta de Acor for us is just a magical slice of heaven !! Beautiful !! Can't wait to be back soon !!

Owner's Response: Thankyou Nick . You are the only couple who have booked the villa over Christmas and the new year so far and it's fantastic that you are coming back . We are working on heating the pool in the coming months so we hope that more people come to visit us in the off peak season when it is fantastic value . The weather this year has been superb with 30 odd degrees centiigrade into October and it's still in the middle twenties now so walking and mountain biking or just visiting the surrounding villages , towns or cities and countryside is a real pleasure . We can even arrange for an organic turkey to be delivered to you and there are organic vegetables in the villas garden to be used . We can also offer some yoga classes if would like this ! Thanks again for a great review and we look forward to welcoming you on Monday . Clive

Simply the best

  • 5 of 5

We had read the reviews and thought this place sounded great. Well it is better than great, the whole property is geared up to making you feel welcome, comfortable and totally relaxed. The setting is in the forest along a dirt track which opens up to the most fabulous villa. The views around the pool are outstanding as is the level of bedrooms with walk in wardrobes and ensuite bathrooms. Although of a high standard the kitchen and lounge areas are well lived in and welcome you as if you were at home. The outdoor kitchen (mainly used) is well equipped and a joy to use, with pizza oven and bbq. The pool house complete with pool table and bar with air con was a great way to while away some time if one could drag oneself away from the amazing, massive pool.We had a 5 month baby with us so the air con was a relief for him from the heat. Every area has an outside eating space, with the biggest decision being which area to eat tonight. There is a comprehensive file of information and phone numbers. The fish man (very handsome) calls once a week, and Lucy who is there to give you any help, extra information along with Caroline come twice a week to clean and garden an bed change. A Pool man comes once a week to check all is as it should be. Apart from that you are totally private and can go to the local river bar, (3 mins) or into Arganil (5 mins away). We never go back anywhere twice but have booked again already for next year. Clive the owner is an outstanding man, who will call you from wherever he maybe should you need him. His communications throughout have been outstanding, such a refreshing change to having to chase people up. So if you were in any doubt about this destination, don't be just go for it. If you snooze you loose.

Owner's Response: A great review and what a relief , I have tried hard this year to provide everything people would want . With the passing this year of my partner of 20 years Phillipa who used to do all of the holiday preparations I was really worried That I couldn't keep up to her standards so reviews like this really give me a lot of comfort. The weather this year was exceptional and I've just left myself after two weeks and it's still lovely and hot . We intend to do a lot more work this year , with more bedrooms but still single group rentals but the possibility of 12 to 14 people as a lot of clients have said they would like to come back with more friends or family The gardens will be added to this autumn and some new shaded and sun areas will be made and a lot more automatic watering will be put in to save Lucy and Kaz so much work ! And they can concentrate more on other things . There is so much space there that it calls out for more tucked away areas so people can wander off alone with a book or just to relax . We hope to heat the pool with a woodburner that can be used by the clients at will and hopefully this may help lengthen the season into October / November when it can still be beautiful but the pool gets chilly . Thankyou for coming and I'm looking forward to seeing you again next year. Kindest regards Clive

Wonderful, spacious, peaceful villa

  • 5 of 5

What a beautiful, idyllic place for a holiday - Clive and Philly have created an amazingly spacious villa with huge gardens and so much lovely outdoor space to enjoy. We spent happy days by the pool and evenings making use of the pizza oven and barbecue before wandering through the beautifully lit gardens watching the sun set over the mountains. The separate party house complete with a well stocked bar, pool table & various games is a winner too!

The local area is stunning, with miles of mountain trails to explore and the local towns of Arganil, Coja and Góis are well worth a look.

Our toddler enjoyed the pool and the warm welcome he got from locals wherever he went. We found lots of nice places to eat, be it pastel de nata with morning coffee in Coja or dinner by the river two minutes from the villa.

If you want a peaceful holiday off the beaten tourist track I cannot recommend it highly enough.

Owner's Response: Dear Nick I am very happy your family enjoyed our beautiful , peaceful , private villa and gardens. I am glad you took advantage of the seperate outside kitchen with the wood fired bread oven. Also ,the freshwater chemical free pool and spacious bar [party house] and its surroundings with lots of places to sit and relax. We are constantly making improvements to the villa with new accommodation and putting a lot of work into the ever maturing gardens . we hope that in the future there will be more organic fruit and veg and salad products to pick throughout the year as we automate the watering from the wells and borehole so we can keep up with the watering in the hot months . Its in a beautiful area of Portugal that is getting more and more popular as people look farther than the coastlines and realise they can get so much more for their money and peace and beauty but with with cities , towns and beaches close at hand. Thank you Clive.

There are plenty of outdoor activities such hiking mountain biking or kayaking or you could use the place as a base from which to explore the busy market towns, historical sights and cities, wine and food of the region.
