Overview

About the property

Chalet in Chinaillon / Le Grand Bornand, Haute Savoie, Rhone-Alpes, France - Be The First On The Slopes Each Morning And The Last To Watch The Sunset

Cosy log fires, authentic local style, magnificent views, delicious cuisine and top class service - all of this in the highest ski-in ski-out chalet on our mountain, only an hour from Geneva.

La Ferme du Soleil is truly one of a kind, set in a gem of a French resort. Our many returning guests love the chalet for the unrivalled access to the pistes and the ageless character that La Ferme du Soleil exudes.

With an excellent snow record the skiing options are diverse. Undulating blues for the beginners, some of the steepest blacks in France for the pros and untouched off-piste for the adventurous. Our central location also offers non-skiers an array of activities to enjoy. There really is something for everyone in Le Grand Bornand, right on our doorstep.

About Anthony Gilbert

The property was bought in 1998. It is owned by Veroni Gilbert. Veroni lives with her husband in Oxfordshire and she and her family come to the chalet several times a year.

Over the past 18 years La Ferme du Soleil slowly developed from a family holiday home to a house which everybody can enjoy for their holiday.

Anthony Gilbert purchased this chalet in 1998

Why Anthony Gilbert chose Le Grand-Bornand

I was first attracted to the property because it was totally unique!

I visited it in the summer and was blown away by its stunning location. Wild flowers and dairy cows dotted the hills, and the sound of bells that gently jingled round their necks were just wonderful.

In the winter, I discovered that it was the perfect ski location for families yet there were black runs capable of challenging most skiers all in a family-friendly environment.

Chose the right week and there are almost no queues. Wonderful.

What makes this chalet unique

The best thing about the property is its location. In winter we are ski-in, ski-out and it is downhill to the lifts to take you up!

We are the highest habitable house in the resort and reap many benefits from that.

We are in the middle of all the fun in the day and can pop out for a 'quick ski', do a couple of runs and be back within half an hour!

It also makes it easy to be the first on the lifts each morning. To be the only one at the top of the mountain, carving into the virgin snow is breathtaking!

There is also something magical about being up there in the evenings when all the other skiers have returned to their chalets in the valley below. It is utterly peaceful.

Notes:
Outside: During the winter the outside space is the ski resort! We have plenty of space for snowman making, igloo construction, snow tunnel digging and sledging in the evening when the resort has closed. We also upkeep an ice table beside the chalet. Perfect for picnics, drinking mulled wine and enjoying the view, or a romantic candle lit evening drink whilst the sun goes down. During the summer we are surrounded by wild flowers and dairy cows! There is an abundance of wildlife and the landscape provides many beautiful walks or routes for mountain biking. Utility Room: Washing machine and tumble dryer. Also a warm laundry room suitable for drying damp ski clothes. Separate boot room near front door. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: All linen and towels are provided. They are changed once a weekly unless otherwise requested. The chalet is given a big clean on changeover days but all bins are emptied and bathrooms checked daily. Other: A large balcony lines the main living area and is perfectly situated to enjoy the spectacular sunset over the mountains with a sundowner! The Writer's Retreat has a kitchenette and can be used as a self contained flat within the chalet.

Magical stay

  • 5 of 5

What a magical week at La Ferme du Soleil with so much snow -

perfect conditions! Rob and Lou looked after us so well – they were fun to spend time with and were very knowledgeable about the local area - nothing was too much trouble for them and their cooking was not only delicious but always beautifully presented.

The chalet is beautiful, full of interesting features and is very spacious. The temperature dropped to -18C one night but the chalet was still warm - I loved the log fires.

The best thing about the chalet is the unbeatable location. Situated high up the mountain, away from the crowds, it is so peaceful and with stunning views of the mountains and down to the village of Le Chinaillon. At the same time it is totally accessible. Ski-in, ski-out and if you don't feel like skiing there are lovely mountain restaurants just a short walk away. My favourites are La Taverne and for a special occasion L'Auberge du Croix. There are no less than 6 restaurants within walking distance of the chalet! Its also easy to reach the quaint small town of Le Grand Bornand, either by going down in the gondola (10 minute walk from the chalet) or a good ski down with a choice of green and red runs. We popped down there for the Wednesday market and a cup of coffee and also paid a visit to the beautiful church.

Le Chinaillon is a friendly resort and covers a considerable area for a good week's skiing. The village itself is lovely with some great restaurants and boutiques. Also worth visiting is the tiny church in the old village and the cheese shop, at the back of which you can visit the Abondance cows during the Winter months. They are the ones who produce the milk for the wonderful local reblochon cheese – a delicacy!

Thank you Rob and Lou for a brilliant and memorable week! I plan to return next year!

Magical stay at La Ferme du Soleil

  • 5 of 5

The most magical week! such a beautiful chalet - warm (despite the -18C temperature outside one night), cosy log fires burning and with Veroni's artistic touches all round the chalet it was a joy to spend time there. We enjoyed amazing food cooked by Rob and Lou. Nothing was too much trouble for them - a truly great couple!

I love the peace and quiet at La Ferme being high up in the mountains and the views from the chalet are simply breathtaking. A great joy to be able ski to and from the front door.

Le Chinaillon is a friendly resort and has plenty of good restaurants within walking/skiing distance from the chalet. My favourites are La Taverne and for a real treat go to L'Auberge du Croix.

We had fun skiing down to Le Grand Bornand for the Wednesday morning market and a coffee. We also popped in to see the magnificent church in Grand Bornand. Then it was lovely to get away from the hustle and bustle of this small, quaint town and return to the peace of La Ferme du Soleil

Above it all

  • 5 of 5

Superbly positioned chalet half-way up the mountain with stunning views to the west of receding ranges and ever-changing sunsets. Cars left far below, peace reigns. Wonderful open living area on top floor to eat, to chat and to find a corner for yourself. Skied straight out to serene blues and challenging blacks. Skied straight back to Rob and Lou’s entertaining hospitality and ever-tempting food. Great place to get away from it all and relax.

Ski hire and lift passes really easy to organise on arrival.

Will return.

Excellent - warm, delicious

  • 5 of 5

I had a wonderful stay, with amazing host, soft sheets, relaxing baths and a library of books. It's truly blissful to be nestled in rugs next to the crackling fire while reading from the library of fascinating books. The perfect remedy after a hard day of skiing in excellent conditions - ideal.

A blissful, peaceful week on the piste!

  • 5 of 5

What an utterly charming chalet. There are so many wonderful touches and the house feels both spacious and cosy with the vast wood fire in the centre of the living area and the breathtaking 360 views over the mountains. The location is totally perfect for the getting those first lifts and being on the mountain before the crowds - not to mention being able to ski straight back in and miss out the faff of having to traipse or get buses back into town.

Rob and Lou were fantastic hosts - their culinary expertise really shone and their local knowledge (Cross Country Skiing and Husky rides!) was so helpful.

Highly recommend for a relaxing break!
