About the Owner

We are from Sydney, Australia and have visited France regularly over the years. When the opportunity arose for both of us to change our careers, we decided to come to France and combine our love of all things French with being able to offer the perfect setting for others to enjoy a wonderful holiday.

There is nothing we love more than seeing the expressions on guests' faces when they arrive at Les Capucines as it really is very difficult to convey the luxury and spaciousness of the property with only limited website photos! "The photos and website don't do it justice" is a phrase we so often hear.

We certainly aim to over deliver, which we believe is the best way not only to ensure guests return but also have them tell their friends about their great holiday experience.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Our first visit to this region in France was one of the best family holidays we have ever had. The hospitality shown to us by Margy and Mark was conducive to comfort and relaxation which Les Capucines has to offer. We will strongly recommend these gites to all our friends and wish Mark & Margy all the success they deserve.

Perfect for our large family group

  • 5 of 5

This property was absolutely perfect for our group made up of 6 families. The outdoor space was beautifully laid out with a very well maintained pool and lush mature gardens. It had lots of quiet areas to escape to, as well as large very well equipped larger areas for eating and gatherings. We have stay in loads of Owners Direct properties but I have to say this was by far the best well equipped. The owners were very quick to respond to any requests, even producing a mandolin to chop veg and a surprise bottle of bubbly on my birthday! They both made us all feel very looked after. This is a perfect location for exploring a beautiful part of France with so much to see and something for everyone. With ease of flying to La Rochelle from the UK in an hour this all make for a very relaxing chance to dip into the French way of life.

Perfect family holiday

  • 5 of 5

We rented all three beautiful properties for our extended family ranging in age from 72 to 5 and thoroughly recommend them in every way. Each one is comfortable and well equipped, the gardens are lovely and the pool is large and sparkling with plenty of sun loungers. Mark and Margy are wonderful hosts, full of information on places to visit and even ordered our pizzas for us one evening! Mark moved garden furniture so that we could all sit down together for meals. Thank you both so much for making sure that we had the perfect holiday. We have already booked to return!

Bucks motorbike group

  • 5 of 5

We are a motorbike group who stay at different places each year and were not disappointed with our stay at La Capacities. Mark and Margy were the perfect hosts although probably a bit surprised to see 12 middle aged men turn up on motorbikes and a pick up truck. The Gites are well laid out and furnished to a high standard with a great swimming pool. Plenty to see around the area and with a great resteraunt 3 minute drive away. La Capacities would be perfect for groups like ourselves or large families or a large group of friends as you can get your own privacy if needed. No downsides and I for one will return with my family, well done Mark and Margy

Perfect for families, couples or groups

  • 5 of 5

Beautiful large property, located in the peaceful french country side, surrounded by corn & sunflower fields. Provides a fantastic base for various day trips to the beaches, historic ports & towns. Property is spacious, spotless, well positioned & equipped with everything needed for a home away from home. Each of the accommodation on the property has their own private courtyard or garden area with tables, chairs & BBQ for out door eating & entertaining. Gardens are extensive, exquisite & colourful with well manicured lawns & hedges. Pool & lounge area is most inviting to while away the hours in the magnificent sunshine..... And to top it off Aussie owners Mark & Margy are the wonderful hosts, only too happy to help plan your days outing/ where to dine or where to find the plentiful markets in the surrounding areas to source divine fresh produce & wines the area is famous for.......nothing was too much trouble.

Thoroughly enjoyed our stay & would highly recommend it too anyone, couples, groups & families, has something for everyone

A great place to stay

  • 5 of 5

What a great place to stay.

One week was not enough and we were lucky enough to get an extra 4 days at Les Capucines. Our gite was so well equipped and clean and we wanted for nothing. Margy and Mark have most definitely gone that extra mile to provide home from home comforts. The swimming pool is large, warm and inviting and each gite has its on BBQ area with everything provided (except food of course). We can most certainly recommend Les Capucines as a great place to stay, you will not be disappointed. Margy and Mark are excellent hosts and they provide lots of local information which enabled us to plan our days out more effectively as we had no knowledge of the region. Apart from all else the La Rochelle area is a great place to holiday. There are so many places to see and lots to do all within an hour’s drive of Les Capucines.

Les Capucines is a perfect place to stay whether you want to relax around the lovely pool, sit outside your own private area of your gite, or go out to visit the sites in this region of France.

Charming and relaxing at Les Capucines

  • 5 of 5

Thank you Mark and Margaret for a wonderful week at Les Capucines. The property is in a relaxing rural setting with surrounding gardens and a great swimming pool area. The gite was clean and inviting with a well equipped kitchen & room to enjoy some well earned time off.

Mark provided us with many options to do around the area and further a field if we wished including two great restaurants close by. We visited Saint Martin de Re, La Rochelle, Fouras and Rochefort with in an easy drive from Les Capucines.

I would throughly recommend Les Capucines for families up to larger group gatherings.

Thanks again from the Thompson's & Atkinson's. We hope to return next year.

Location

From the Owner

When my wife and I were looking for a gite property in 2013 we visited over 25 different complexes all over France. Les Capucines was by far the most luxurious, well equipped and most centrally located property that we visited. The Charente Maritime area of France is the second sunniest (after the Cote d'Azur) as well as being extremely attractive, relatively undiscovered and unspoilt. The range of activities are many and varied and there are so many things to see and do whether you are young or old, active or more relaxed. There are a number of fabulous places to visit - ranging from sandy beaches, to historical towns, to rolling countryside and vineyards. The Charente Maritime is also home to some great local produce - in particular, oysters and shellfish, mussels, Cognac, Pineau Charente, cheese and wine. Les Capucines, is a beautiful old 17th century Charentaise farmhouse which has been lovingly restored and converted into our summer home & luxury holiday property.

Activity and Interests

Nearest Airport : La Rochelle at 35 Kilometres Nearest Train : Surgeres at 10 Kilometres Nearest Motorway : A10 at 5 Kilometres Nearest Restaurant : Lussant at 3 Kilometres Nearest Beach : Fouras at 20 Kilometres Car: necessary

Les Capucines is surrounded by lush countryside, fields of sunflowers and is a short distance to local shops and facilities, including 2 fabulous restaurants, one for the whole family (with a kids menu) and one amazing 'silver service' catering for more adult tastes.

Only 10 minutes drive away, there is a very large supermarket where virtually everything is available ... even on a Sunday morning during the summer season!

For those that prefer buying their produce direct and enjoy the colour and buzz of the 'market experience', there are markets on virtually every day somewhere in the area where you can purchase great quality fresh vegetables, fruit, seafood and many other local delicacies.

Also, with Les Capucines being so centrally located, there is an enormous variety of activities and places to visit within easy reach...

To the west, the golden sandy Atlantic beaches are only 20 minutes away, as well as the historic old seaport of La Rochelle and the glamorous islands of Ile de Re, Oleron and Aix.

To the east are the beautiful towns along the Charente river, including the historic old towns of Saintes and Cognac.

A short drive to the north, is the Loire Valley with its magnificent Chateaux

To the south, there are the beautiful rolling countryside of the Dordogne as well as the vineyards of Bordeaux.

So whether you go north, south, east or west - and everywhere in between - there is just so much for the whole family to do and see whilst on holiday at Les Capucines!

Special interest holidays...

The Charente Maritime area is particularly suited to cycling for all ages and ability. There are a number of very scenic cycle tracks available not only locally but also further afield in idyllic settings such as the unique island of Ile de Re, which caters specifically for family cyclists.

Some standard bikes are available for usage in the local area, free of charge. More professional bicycles are also available for hire which can be booked in advance and delivered straight to your door!

The local marshlands are the perfect place for naturalists and birdwatchers alike to spot an amazing variety of flora and fauna, right on the door step.

The scenic countryside all around Les Capucines is also fantastic for long and short walks or more serious hiking.

So there is no excuse not to take in the fresh countryside air and perhaps enjoy a soothing in-room massage, from a fully trained masseuse, on your return?

Being located in such a diverse and interesting area as the Charente Maritime, Les Capucines is the perfect location for family and friends to enjoy an active or more relaxed holiday together, without the crowds and expense that have spoiled the more 'touristy' areas of France!
